You can grow in a large cardboard box lined with aluminum foil if you have to, with CFLs for lighting. How much pot are you looking to harvest, and what's your budget?

Also, where are you looking to locate the grow, house, garage, apartment, whatever, and what country/state do you live in?

I have a Black Orchid 80x80x160 and it is perfect for a 400w light over four plants. Really well made and much better than the 'secret jardin' one that I was using before.
I am limited by space, hence the small tent, but you should be good to get a bigger one.

You need a light, a timer for the light, and something to deal with the Oder if your in a area its not legal. Carbon filters and Oder absorbing gels work great. I would get am HPS lamp and ballest for lighting, either 400, 600, or 1000 watt bulb/ballest. More power means more yield (pot) but is more expensive and gives off more heat

Keep you grow area well ventilated and between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, 75 is optimal. Have your plants under 24hour a day light until they are about a foot tall, then switch to 12hours light 12 hours dark. The dark period has to be completely dark and uninterrupted. About 8-10 weeks of the 12/12 light cycle and you should be ready to harvest the flowers (buds)

Before you buy any equipment, buy a growing guide and look at your options in depth first. You don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on the wrong stuff. You can buy online, or weirdly enough, a grow guide at borders bookstore or Barnes and noble. Even a single grow is a 3 month project, so be completely prepared before you start.

Just look up the flowering time for the strain you're growing. Picking them 3 or 4 days early/late isn't a huge deal anyway. Your buds wont be optimal, but they'll be almost as good. The buds take weeks to ripen, so it not like you have to time the harvest precisely if you just want something that smokes ok.

So hypothetically, if I wanted to start growing weed, where would I start exactly? Not looking for much, maybe like one plant. And since I'm a beta fag living with parents, I would like to grow outside (we have a lot of forest on our property).

I would recommend a 400w hps lamp and electronic ballest and a lightweight wing fixture. Have it about two feet above the plants, a 400w hps is enough for a square yard of growing space. I would recommend ten-gallon fabric pots with high quality potting soil. Water them everyday. You don't even really need a tent if you can keep the garage totally blacked out during the plants night cycle. And don't forget to sex your plants! Males are no good. October is for outdoors. Indoors, they start to flower as soon as the dark period is 12 hours long each day. Some indicas are as quick as 7 weeks, some sativas are up to 12 weeks. Get your plants anywhere from 6 to 18 inches tall before you start to flower them, and remember that they'll still double in size during the flowering stage, so don't wait too long indoors. Keep the light at least a foot away from your plant tops or the heat can hurt your plants. Be prepared to spend at least 400 to 600 dollars in total for light, fixture, ballest, pots, and electricity and fertilizer. You should get about half a pound to a pound at harvest. Don't let your buds mold after you harvest them! Cure em in a cool, dry, well ventilated place for at least 2 to 3 days before smoking

The main point of a tent is catching all the light from your lighting choice, and keeping out unwanted light during the night cycle. If you can black out the garage and find a way to hang your light, you can put the money you would spend on a tent towards better lighting. Be prepared to deal with heat and humidity issues in the garage, especially if your growing in the summer. Also, check your power usage. Running a HPS lamp and AC unit in the garage simultaneously could blow a fuse/breaker depending on how many amps each is using. A 400 or 600 watt lamp and small AC unit in window shouldn't be too much. Remember, 75F is ideal with moderate humidity, (30 to 60 percent) and temps over 85F are really bad for your plants especially if its a dry heat

All electronic ballests use about 15% less electricity then magnetic ballests, and are less noisy/less heat. A good electronic 400W or 600W ballest is about $200-$250, but its worth it. Bulb and fixture should total together $100 to $150. What you could do is start the plants mid may-ish, have the fabric pots/soil on a cart with wheels, that way you could move them outdoors and get free sunlight that way if your security situation permits. Another idea would be to grow only inside, but run your lighting only at night during the 12on/12 off flowering cycle. You could cool the garage with the cool night air, instead of paying to air condition. You can use a inline fan with an active carbon filter to kill the Oder on the exhast air if you want, fan and filter are like $150ish total
