As for constructive criticism, preference isn't always based entirely on raw quality. Things like nostalgia and personal identification play as big a role. There are a good number of things and places I'm particularly attached to that in objective terms are completely unremarkable.

Yes, people judge everyone by appearances every day. That's not to say that you'd judge a Pink Floyd, MLP, and Swastika shirt by the same standards. If a pre-teen girl, old man, and black dude wore each shirt respectively, compared to an old man, young girl, and skinhead respectively, that's going to change how people look at them. As for expecting people to make fun of others, that also seems like a blanket statement, that is both true and false if looked at over a period of time. Say a straight and gay person meet each other, they make fun of each other and become good friends, happy ending. Conversely, they can make fun of each other but someone's humor is just slightly different than the other and one gets offended, they resent the other for what they thought and no longer speak to each other, sad ending.
