Drifting and burnouts in general can be hard on any box. There is nothing wrong with presetting 2nd gear and using more rps (Withing limits) or engine breaking. Most large sedans have a 'power' button that does just this, mainly for towing.

I interpreted him as meaning from a standing start. Not sure about sports autos but the one I had wouldn't rev high enough for maximum acceleration from a standing start unless you revved it up with your foot on the brake.

Most of the disadvantages people list can be overcome by understanding your box but I'd still take a manual any day.

ABS nearly killed me back in the 90s. I was braking quite hard on a downward slope that had some gravel scattered on it. Motherfucker, I drove a '67 alfa romeo with a blown clutch, shot synchromesh, and a busted guibo (the fitting that aligns the transmission to the gearbox). It was practically undrivable.
