USA, 29, Army National Guard for 12 years. Did tour in Iraq, Afghanistan. No real stories. I didn't come back and hate all muslims like some fags do. I don't respect them, but they are just people we happen to be at war with. Seen a few dead bodies, both enemy and friend. Not really affected anymore. I use the military and my vet status to get free schooling. Gonna get my masters without ever going in debt, or hardly paying a dime. I'm not up my ass about my service, but in all honesty I do feel sorry for people that never served. It's an insane experience you can't gain any other way.

And for all you others thinking of joining, don't worry about the people that say "just another dead GI, died for corporate oil, can't live your own life".... those are people that either couldn't pass the mental part, or were too afraid to join. Keep your chin up, and enjoy the great benefits and stories you'll have for the rest of your life.

I used to think like that too...BEFORE I went in. I went into Air Force, and you know what? I couldn't handle it. I had to leave, and 27 days after arriving at Lackland, that's exactly what I did. A year and a half later, I went into the Army, finished Basic, but was separated during AIT.

During that time, I realized two things.

Keep in mind, I had finished the hardest part--Basic Training (Army)--so my reasoning for leaving was much more than someone who just left because they couldn't hack it.

But if you still feel this way, think of the countless soldiers who came before you, and did it with no complaints. Maybe you were kicked out? I've just never seen a vet this upset about their service.

Chair-Force here, used to work at AFN (yes, the commercials are shit) it's a great gig, get to meet all kinds of people and do the fun parts of most military jobs without ever being in any real danger. 9 month service in the german army starting october 2009, pretty rough basic training, followed by 1 month of doing drivers licence for trucks and tanks up to 30 tons, was stationed in hammelburg, largest german infantry base, drove a lot in trainings for afgahnistan. was a lot of fun after all. still miss that time, this was the most fun i have had in my life so far.. most people would not understand this i guess ^^
