RTS means REAL TIME STRATEGY meaning it takes place in real time not turn based... If you can't manage your troops in response to enemy advances at the same time, and you don't have the ability to micromanage then it is not a real time strategy game.

Yep. One of the greatest things about SupCom (and it's predecessor, Total Annihilation) was the massive scale of everything.

Then SC2 fucked everything up, especially the scale. Plus switching from a flow-style economy (C&C used this style too) to what games like Warcraft and Starcraft use. That was just dumb.

The Campaign was a lot of fun and kinda eases you into the different races you can play. Also the Skirmish mode is great, really easy to load up the game and click a few buttons to play the AI. It's "slow pace" reminds me of C&C but the graphics are amazing.

Empire Earth is fun but bloated. that goes for Empire Earth 2 as well. It's kinda ugly, the UI sucks and it's not intuitive or balanced in any way shape or form. That doesn't mean it isn't FUN, but if it's something it ain't, it's polished.

Something simply would prob be like Age of Empires 1/2/3 or Age of Mythology. Or WarCraft 3, StarCraft 2 or some such. I'd prob recommend the "Age of..." games tho. I'm not a huge fan of them, but they are simple, they introduce you to a lot of shit and they are fun.

Homeworld should be a step on the way up the ladder.

Emperor: Battle for Dune.

There's three factions and 5 sub factions. In both campaign and multiplayer (or skirmish) you get to choose your factions and two of your subfactions, so that there's great room for variation within the game itself.

It's the last true "Westwood" game, I think, and it shows. It's the same formula that had been going strong since Dune 2 and C&C1, but it's refined to a point and taken into 3D.

In many ways, tho, you can tell why the Blizzard way of RTS design won out over Westwoods. The UI isn't perfect...

Still, fun game, lots of units and a very living world with sandworms, storms and re-emergent spice. Fun!

Get a hold of the original Starcraft and the Brood War Expansion and try those out. That's a good middle ground to all of the RTS's in terms of resource management and army management as you can learn how to micromanage and macro-manage with the different races. The upgrade system is extremely forgiving and easy to learn (except you won't know what some things do since the lack of ability descriptions).

Other RTS's that anons are mentioning here have more robust resource management or have giant armies at your command so once you get a feel of RTS games then try out more that are being suggested in here. Personally I feel like trying out Grey Goo now.

Seriously dudes, if you liked Red Alert 1 or C&C, try OpenRA. It's really fun. It's got bots so you can just do an offline skirmish and rig the teams as you like. Tons of maps, too.

You also don't need to have the ISO's of Red Alert and C&C. It downloads them automatically.

Star Ruler 2 will be an amazing RTS once it's done.
Mainly because the engine it runs on is hilariously efficient (It takes liberal use of the sandbox mode or over-the-top subsystem modification before the game starts even lagging a little bit. I have yet to cause it to crash by stressing it, and I've done some pretty crazy stuff).

Pa is a good concept but from what I've played it seems to lack a lot. A big bonus of the original was multiple races with the ability to capture tech. Gave skirmishes added dynamics when you had the ability to collect all tech trees.

There's a definite loss in fidelity with the planets compared to supcom maps. You can't really exploit a terrain advantage much - the idea is that it's all about the approach angle. That's my amateur feelings about it anyway.
Plus the edge of the map is a major strategic element - I wonder why they haven't tried to replicate this in some way by having swathes of inaccessible terrain - perhaps even by aircraft - so you might have some kind of defensible pockets or unique terrain to conquer and hold.

Currently it's like playing Risk on a big board that is almost entirely uniform save for some minor peturbations. Where's the fun in that? The fun in Risk is when you take Australia and hole up like a motherfucker and end up taking over all of Asia.

Can someone explain the difference between RTS & RTT? I'd recommend Rome: Total War, but its categorized as RTT. Not sure if it matters though.

Age of Empires 2. There's a HD version out that you can get for around 9€ on g2a. Been playing it for weeks since I got it, 10/10
