Need career help /b/. Is this reference letter request alright? I'm spaghetti nervous about bothering anyone, especially a Professor I like.

In the mean time petite girl thread.
>ITT Petite Girls

Here is the letter:

I was hoping you’d be willing to write a letter of recommendation for me. This is Anon, and I attended your Architectural History I class in spring 201-. I received an A in the course, and enjoyed taking it. I am now beginning to apply for jobs/internships and I need a letter of recommendation for an internship; as well as for others to come in the future.

I feel that I should ask you for a letter of recommendation not only because I did well in your class, but also because your class was very interactive and had an environment conducive to group work and interaction; it was a good example of synergy for me. The class also added a unique perspective of history that was new for me, and I enjoyed seeing historical architecture that was a product of its time. I’m still hoping to take your Architecture II class if I can ever fit into a semester schedule; I’m majoring in Computer Science and the requirements often dominate my semester.

The internship I’m applying to is asking that I personally upload a letter of recommendation, so it seems I would need to directly receive the letter and upload it myself to the Career Development Website. I reviewed this internship with a career counselor, and she affirmed that the employer is asking for a direct file upload; and that the employer may contact you to confirm the letter of recommendation is valid. The application to the internship ends late March, but I would like to apply as soon as possible; but by no means do I want to make you rush.

I hope this message reaches you well, and that what I’m asking is genial. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

A sniveling dolt

Whats even more amazing Anon is the fact that she said she would write a letter for me. She doesn't care from what I've seen, yet I still am hesitant to bug her.

A large spaghetti factor is the fact that she has to send the letter directly to me. I'm scared that she won't like the idea of that; I only ask because that's what is required of me.

Just try and sound cordial. Wait until tomorrow morning to sent it, and start it off with "Good morning Dr. ___,". And to remedy sounding like a robot, just make your message shorter, because if it's long and robotic, you just sound robotic, but if it's short and robotic, you might just come off as concise.

You are a CS major, presumably seeking an internship in CS, and you're asking an Architecture History professor for a letter of recommendation? Particularly if the professor doesn't remember you (seeing as how you needed to remind him), you're not going to get anything out of it. (And half of them say, "write the letter that you want and I'll sign it")

It's probably too late, but couldn't you have, I don't know, attended office hours, or joined an undergraduate group?

Of course, I interned two summers at tech companies and never needed a letter -- just a really easy interview. Honestly, the bar isn't all that high.

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in, 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you"

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
(I bless the rain)
I bless the rains down in Africa

I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa

Dude that's what I'm feeling with everything but this one job.

I want a job for now until the summer and this one seems pretty nice. Actually has a slow start, and a possibility for programming.

Its basically the only job out now, and they want a reference letter. I don't know why.

I'd ask my old Comp. Sci Professor but I don't her well enough, and my new Professor really likes me, but its only been about a month of classes.

Haven't even taken a test with him yet, never mind finished the course.

All the Professors I have good relations with are either Historians, Lawyers, Language Arts whatever the fuck.

I did well in one math class, but that shit is so old, and plus math is kind of irrelevant too.

Alright my friend, here is your serious answer.

1) In regards to how to address them, it should be 'Dear Professor 'blankety blank'. That's it. No sir, no madam. This is a letter of recommendation. If you can't use their name, why should they write anything for you?

2) The letter itself is decent. You're right in the fact that (at times) it is a bit informal, but so it goes. You seem like an informal kind of guy.

3) Be careful of your use of semi-colons. You use too many, and you don't use them correctly 100% of the time. This (above all else) makes the letter seem unprofessional. They are distracting.

4) The paragraph that starts "I feel that I should ask you for...." should be re-written. This sounds like a copy pasted response that you'll be giving to a thousand other professors after you change a few nouns. This is the most informal part of your letter because:
It's poorly written.
It gives the professor no idea of who you are, or why they should vouch for you.
It seems fake and forced.

5) Now that I read it again, re-write the last paragraph as well. It's too wordy. Why does the professor need to know any of that? It sounds like you're just trying to fill the page.

6) Does the professor remember you at all? Does ANY professor remember you at all?
If the answer is 'no' to the first question, ask yourself the second. If both answers are no, rethink the approach to this letter of recommendation.

Hope this helps.

Maybe less is more. Perhaps I should make it a lot more simpler, and avoid the long read.

Maybe this is a little better:

Maybe Anon, maybe.

I think in the end if I write less, even if it has less "charm" it will gain points for being shorter.

Also, this is the first time I've ever written a reference letter. I don't plan on improving, but I figured I'd throw that fodder out there.

Not necessarily. It shows the analytical skills that are important in this field. Fucking anyone can program, but can you solve problems?

I've been in the industry for 9 years, and know plenty of people who got jobs through degrees other than CS -- usually physics or math (and a slew of others). I'd see about that one ahead of history (but hey, maybe your relationship with the first professor is better... up to you man)

I know about the name part, was just throwing that out there.

Appreciate the advice. You're write, the last paragraph is a little wordy, and I'm going to change the middle to:

I did well in your class, but I also learned how to better work with others, your class was very interactive and had an environment conducive to group work and interaction.
>>
Basically everything this anon said >>599159975

Also, I would suggest that you try to add some sort of spirit into your letter -- don't try to force humor or "quirkiness", but a slightly more colorful wording could make your letter and your personality stand out. You are right in that you sound like a robot at the moment. Just make your prose look as though it flowed out naturally or at least not stiff.

"[I hope] that I'm asking is genial" is not correct. Were you looking for the word 'agreeable'? 'Genial' means 'friendly', and your letter reads less as a friend-to-friend supplication than as a HAL 9000-style monologue.

My relationship with this Architectural History Professor was a lot better just because she liked me a whole lot, and she blatantly said at the end of the class that she would "be happy to write me a letter of recommendation."

I remember finishing her class with over 100 points, she gave out extra credit and I aced that too. She was very happy with my class room participation, test scores, and the fact that I never missed answering a question that stumped the class.

I would ask my other professors if I had to, but I don't want to dip into the reserve.

Only my Freshman Algebra Professor liked me and I talked to her a bit. My current math Professor is super good at teaching, and I'm planning on going to his office hours some time next week to review something before a test.

So maybe he'll remember my face, but I doubt it. Its a large class, and the Professor rarely looks out for anyone to talk to at any time.

Thank you Anon. I brushed it up a bit:

Dear Prof. Name,

I was hoping you’d be willing to write a letter of recommendation for me. I attended your Architectural History I class in spring 2014, and received an A in the course. I am now beginning to apply for jobs/internships and I need a letter of recommendation for an internship; as well as for others to come in the future.

I did well in your class, but I also learned how to better work with others, your class was very interactive and the environment was conducive to group work and interaction.

The internship I’m applying to is asking that I personally upload a letter of recommendation, so it seems I would need to directly receive the letter and upload it myself to the University’s Career Development Center Website; this may lead to the employer contacting you to confirm the letter is valid. The application to the internship ends late March. I would like to apply as soon as possible, but by no means do I want you to rush.
