I promised to show the scar on my arm from Dune, will do so in a second.

Didn't catch that. How did Dune give you a scar?
>>

Oh jesus fuck.

I was in England around 10 years ago and saw that in a shelf, and ever since then I've been feeling the urge to read it ;_;

I was in high school and wanted to prove that I could last through the "black box" treatment as well. Not sure exactly what it was called, but you know the box he put his hand into where he felt his hand melt? Yeah, that. I burnt my forearm on the metal edging around a reading lamp. My brother told me it would scar up if I peeled the scab so... I peeled the scab. Fucking high school. Just took pics, will upload in a sec. They aren't amazing or anything. It's not like people look at me and go "OH SHIT WHAT DID YOU DO!" But the scar had stuck with me.
>>
>>598567106
Yes it was, but no need not to mention again, great series. Sometimes it makes me want to learn to fly.

Ok, here we go. quick posts of a very unimpressive scar. I tell people who ask that I got it from the first job I ever had at Wendy's. I should probably make a better story...
>>
>>598567744
Every one says that. I may have to try and re-read that hitchhiker book. I tried and got all the way through but didn't enjoy it. But sometimes when sometimes you expect something to be epic like everyone says...it's not epic the way you think it will be and you don't like it. Maybe that's why I didn't like it. It's the kind of book I usually enjoy.

That book was shit compared to This Side of Paradise.

But it was still better than that circle jerk of a movie. Spiderman can suck my ass.

>>598568161
I like his witty little tidbits of wisdom. Between his musings on the importance of towels (my favorite passage of the book) and the truth regarding how dull and uninteresting infinity really is, I consider Hitchhiker's the font of all knowledge. His voice is just wonderful.

I liked the movie for one reason: it made me think about the book in a whole new way. There were some things I didn't pick up on until Baz slapped me across the face with them. For instance: Gatsby's pink suit. You know how when someone has an idealistic view of their memory, they're "looking through rose-tinted glasses?" The suit symbolizes his rose-tinted view on the world. Gatsby has this idealistic view of Daisy and the past that they shared, and it can't be further than the truth. The film has its faults, but if it makes me think about the book in a new way, it can't be all bad, right?

Be right back, need to make myself another white russain. In the meantime I will recommend an author who I've been obsessed with recently: Terry Pratchett. If you are looking to get lost in another world, one full of adventure, fun, and without the sinister tinge that of real life, read his books. Any of them. If you need a starting points, read the Watchmen series, starting with Gaurds, Guards! Amazing author.

On a completely opposite note, and I'll preface this by saying I was very excited to read it, but I HATED HATED HATED this book. Think Sword Art Online meets Snowcrash, The dialog is so horribly written, it was as if the author was 70 years old and like "this is totally how teenagers talk man... "

And when the dialog isn't a terrible attempt at teenage colloquialisms it is just completely monotone and boring - like all the characters using the same voice.

The concept was totally sound, and there are good things to be said about it, and the dialog problem was kind of odd because the narration by the protagonist was more that adequately done.... But fuck FUCK FUCK this book.
>>
>>598572404
They are. What the father wrote (at least the first few novels) is true literature. What the son and KJA wrote was something that wasn't good enough for a Xena episode. I only read one. I was so embarrassed for him I had to stop. It's actually unimaginable to me that they made as many as they have.

The first one was boring. He wrote it in the 70s when he thought he was a real writer. When he gave up the idea and realized he was a drunk hack he relaxed and actually wrote a couple of decent stories. You can start at book 2 and never even miss that piece of shit. Most of them are worth it. The last couple suck ass but are worth it if only for the closure. Everyone bitches about the ending but really it's the only ending with any logic.

True. I was never really satisfied with the explanation as to why the Emperor flew the Choam company flag. Or why Fenrick refused to kill what he wanted most to be but knew he couldn't.

What I'm reading right now, almost finished. So much yes:

"It can be hard to wait for the flow to start," he said, "but when you have to wait, you have to wait. In the meantime, assume you're dead."
"You mean I should stay dead for now?" I asked.
"How's that?"
"YOU MEAN I SHOULD STAY DEAD FOR NOW?"
"That's it, sonny. 'Dying is the only way / For you to float free: / Nomonhan.'"

And you!!! <3

"Dune" is great -- but ends so strangely. Maybe it's just because you don't identify as female, but the last line of the book is: "While we, Chani, we who carry the name of concubine -- history will call us wives." I mean, that's kind of creepy, right? But whatever, Dune is legit.

Someone mentioned "Crime and Punishment" -- I'd go for "Notes from the Underground" instead ["I am a sick man... I am a spiteful man. I am an unpleasant man."].
I love "Metamorphosis" and "The Trial" by Kafka more, though.

>>598569849
Yuhg, no. Sandman.

"The Secret History" and "Wolf in White Van" are tits.

If you're looking for philosophy, "Madness and Civilization," and "Suicide: A Discourse on Voluntary Death."

Oh! oh, and "The Life & Times of Michael K."

Finally, "Fahrenheit 451" was my favorite for so long, since I was a kid. Super nominate for God-Tier.

Yey books.

I'm sorry, what ground break hit fantasy series have you written?
>>
>>598583154

you could have just not bothered. Or you could have read the original Canterbury tales, since Hyperion is a massive rip off of it.

Everything about Hyperion is so fucking plebby, it really irritates me when people try to hold it up as a quality work.

A song of ice and fire isnt ground breaking in any way. Its just another shitty fantasy book that people are obsessed with because it is filled with descriptions of dicks. Stupid faggots.

>Or you could have read the original Canterbury tales, since Hyperion is a massive rip off of it.

I see that you just read a description of the series, and the not the books themselves. Otherwise, you wouldn't have made such an asinine judgment. Aside from pilgrims each telling a story (which only lays the groundwork for the subsequent novels), there is no similarity between this series and the Canterbury Tales.

Next time actually read the books before shooting off your ignorant pleb mouth.
>>

Alan Dean Foster's Speelsinger series was shithot. Would recomend it to the people who talked about H2G2 earlier in thread.
Also, Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance series.
>>
I don't know if I'd say Godtier but The Black Company was always a favorite series of mine. It encompassed like 40 years of the lives of mercenaries, and you felt like you grew old with them, you went through their struggles and their good times, and when someone went down you felt like you were mourning with them too. Cook did a really great job of getting you attached to people and killing them off, better than RR Martin did in my opinion.
>>
>>598568376
Didn't care for it.

"Aww, you feel out of place being a wall street monkey surrounded by these people who are obscenely rich, and you feel awkward about setting up your cousin with that guy who invited you to a party one time and has for some reason decided to confide in you?"

These get pretty crazy at the end. The first four books take place in a world of air, stone, fire, and water respectively. The last book is the shortest of the whole series.
