If you are going to make money writing, you need 3 things above all else, in this order.

1. Marketing skills
Under this I am including getting/maintaining connections, advertising your work intelligently, etc.
2. Organization
How do you get connections? Doing a FUCK TON of shitty writing jobs. Writing website copy for 50 bucks, maybe a few shitty blog articles for some companies. On top of this, you should be writing fiction/articles (whatever you're into) and trying to get them published.
All of this means you can't be a slacker, and you can't be unorganized. You can crush that website copy in a couple hours, maybe less. Have it to them by 9 AM and it's the first thing they see in their inbox when they get to their desk. BOOM, impression made. Now write those 20-30 minute articles for 10 dollars a piece, maybe you'll get semi steady work out of one of them. I could go on about this, but I won't.
3. Writing ability
