I do muay Thai but I started with Karate and I'm here to tell you you're full of shit.

A lot of Karate training is really lame and doesn't prepare people properly for a fight, but if taught and applied correctly it's really useful.

Kyoji Hiroguchi, Kid Yamamoto, Lyoto Machida, and even GSP all use Karate style striking so... Karate fighters are usually very adept at closing distance without making their movements predictable, sports style Karate really helps train people for this and a lot of mma places adapt it.

Obviously Katas and flat footed stances you learn aren't useful in a fight but they're for leg conditioning and exercise, not fighting.

Unfortunately, Krav does have grappling, just very little, as the emphasis is placed on not going to ground. Even against a basic fighter, you're vulnerable to his 5 friends who are standing around you so it's a bad idea.

I'll be honest though, if a Judo guy got me in tight quarters he'd probably own my ass since we have virtually no defence against being thrown, other than to hit the guy before he gets to you. It's about being realistic, and knowing that even an untrained fighter COULD get lucky and knock you the fuck out - hence why we only fight when there's no other choice.

That I'll agree with - it's highly trained and hypothetical, but they change techniques completely everytime they find a new one that works "better", and I've had huge disagreements with some of them as they simply aren't realistically applicable in a real fight.

For example, the knife defense is taught for an overhand "icepick" type stab, which is only ever used when attacking you from behind. Except in real life, the attacker comes at you with about 3 - 5 stabs a SECOND aimed right at your vital organs. You might deflect one or two, but not all of them.

While I do teach my students this technique, I also teach them that there's a huge chance of it failing. The only realistic thing you can do is a forward stomping kick to the chest region, turning around, and running. Kicking gives you longer range so even if the knife does nick you, it's in your leg and not your lungs. It should create enough distance temporarily to get away. Knives are no fucking joke no matter how good you think you are, and that's the mistake so many people make - "I know a knife defense, now I can take on anyone".

Karate I did was Shotokan. I didn't know any better back then.

Just make sure they compete and focus on conditioning. All American kickboxing is also a good place to start, it's very similar but it excludes elbows and knees and a bit of the clinch fighting found in muay thai.

I have worked as a bouncer most of my working life.
I can safely say that although the training has been useful, powerlifting and a rough childhood help more.
