There's a difference between driving and avoiding getting stuck. A 4x4 truck is highly recommended in that weather simply because it makes it easier to drive. Just because it's not absolutely necessary doesn't mean it's not a very good idea.
I've seen the beds and rockers rust out completely, but I've never seen a 7.3 that fell apart. They rust away, but never in a way that affects the capability of the truck.

a 7.3 with low miles is incredibly rare, further, they're not any more practical for what i do. when i have heavy hauling more then what this truck will do, guess what? i pay someone. i'm in the agricultural business and i need to haul some loads around 20k lbs. simple as that.
a 7.3 burns a lot more fuel, same with getting a 4.7 rear end or higher. i need high end pickup from the start and that's mostly it. i am in the mountains of the Appalachians. i don't need flat out speed, i need torque and agility.

He was referring to reliability. 6.0s are notorious for dying early, even when 'bulletproofed'. You can build a 7.3 to output more than a 6.0 without sacrificing reliability.
Because 4x4 makes it harder to fuck up, and easier to recover from a fuckup, with minimal extra hardware. I don't have any problems driving RWD in snow either, in fact I turn off traction control in snow because I like to whoop around corners, but I still want 4x4 just in case I fuck up.
