I first started playing with a group of about 10 kids in knew IRL. They had all got each other into rs, and I was among the last they convinced to play. Apparently, they had a hazing ritual that everyone had gone through:

Tell the new guy about a secret shop in the wilderness. The shop owner sells law runes for dirt cheap, but only if you can buy a large quantity at a time (meaning you need abig chunk of your cash). You have to pull a lever to get to him, but you can only see the lever if you wear some of you best stuff (which was like steel for me back then, lol). The shop would be empty because not many people knew about and it was in the wildy. Being the naive level 30-something I was, I believed every word of it.

So, my "escorts" to the secret were a ranger and a meleer both in their mid 40's wearing their best gear to play along. They were unusually quiet while walking thru the wilderness and they took a long time to type when we did talk - I could tell they were pming each other. Our leader (the ranger) kept stopping to close pop-ups. We got to a multicombat zone in about level 30 wildy, and stopped for a bit - this was when I was at the height of my suspicion. Suddenly the ranger yells "Attack!" but doesn't do anything. I thought I was safe, but then the warrior starts wailing on me. I haul ass outta there with the warrior attacking and leaving the ranger in the dust. I get far enough away that melee can't reach and start singing MC Hammer's "Can't Touch This" because I know I'm in the clear.

Apparently the ranger, who was supposed to snare me, had gotten pop-up spam as soon as he had typed "attack" and I was long gone by the time he closed them. As far as I know, I was the only one to survive the hazing. That was five years ago.........none of those kids still play. I would gladly have let them kill me if just one of them had kept playing =[

I was headed to green drags for a slayer task when I saw two white dots on my map. I stopped and angled the camera at them: two guys wearing mystic - one near my level in his 70's and another too high to attack me in his 100's. After a few seconds waiting to see whether they would react to my presence, I decide it's safe and almost continue on. Out of nowhere the level 70-something starts bombarding me with ancient magicks which were brand new back then. The moment I realize I'm being attacked I tele to falador. I look at my hp and realize I have 6 hp left. In just a couple of seconds he had done 60+ damage which was unheard of in the days before claws and ags (barring some VERY lucky ddp specs from a maxed character).

Magic was extremely overpowered back then. I've torn a new one for anyone complaining about "underpowered" magic ever since - they had a long period of being untouchable and couldn't stand to be evened out with the rest of us.
