One theory I had is they are us but more evolved and from the future. Well we exist out of the chemicals we exist of because there's a certain Goldilocks zone of reactivity between elements. For example, nothing really comes close to carbon in complex structures. What makes you think few people have considered this? It's not uncommon in fantasy/sci fi to have old empires. Look at Wh40k. There are tons of races that have once ruled the galaxy but are not waning - eldar and necron, for example.
