Using a vpn, or any kind of layered service, is all about managed risk.
Do you trust that the vpn isn't logging connections...are you paying in a way that is untraceable? These are all potential problems that need to be considered.

If you're really worried, your best bet is to hack into someone's wifi and use it when doing anything explicitly illegal.
