That wouldn't be an issue in either case, though, considering that strings and various kinds of mesh-like constructs can be created from grasses and tree fibers (you can make them pliable by heating them in water, preferably with a caustic agent from ash for example).

Axe may not be optimal but should get most jobs done.

Being able to start a fire without rubbing wood / use flint like a caveman is great. A fire is essential to keep bugs and predators away (t-rex prolly won't care though...)

An axe is hopeless for fine cutting work. Knife is the only real tool you need. Same goes for machete, although the machete might actually work.

A medikit (and its contents) is the only thing on this list you can't improvise in the wild. You wouldn't believe how many people succumb to infections if they don't die of dehydration first. Water purifying pills? They'll run out. Rope? Easy to make. Water can be boiled to have an infinite source of water.
We all agree the fucking book is useless. Then it's down to the rifle vs. the fire starter. You know what bullets contain? Gunpowder. If you're too much of an idiot to understand how ammunition can ignite something you're dead already in this game. The rifle can also be used for other things, but is by far the most useless of the three items in A.

The big question is if you start off with any ammo. Even just the 5 rounds in the magazine or one in each barrel of a elephant gun. Thats enough to go out and find more ammo. If you have to start off day one fending off raptors and t-rexes with a unloaded club and a bowie knife, then your fucked from the start with section A.

axe = chop down trees, build a shelter/fort
clean water = survive for quite a while without food
fire = scare predators away and cook food once you get it, also good for light if you find a cave to live in, or if your fort is underground in some way.

A - rifle is too loud, attracting dinos to you. Also miss, and then what? Knife doesnt have thhe range or power as the ax or machete. the medical supplies would be good assuming if you are attacked you survive in the first place.

C. machete is good. rope could be useful in shelter, climbing trees, and the guidebook will help you survive assuming there were no dinosaurs. So all in all not that helpful.

So clearly I choose B. Ax is effiecent enough as the machete in killing small dinosaurs. The water purifying pills will keep you hydrated no mater the water condition, and the fire starter will scare away the dinosaurs.

Well, how many? What types?

What type of island?

If there's shittons of dinosaurs everywhere, I'm taking option A for both self defense and patching myself up in case I get in a fight with one.

If it's a tropical type of island, definitely B, because an axe/hatchet is incredibly useful and the firestarter will help in wet rainforest type environments.

If it's less rainforesty the axe won't help as much and I'll take C for helping out with bushes and shrubs.

do you guys even robinson crusoe? 3 years of solitude will make anyone go mad. the book is probably the best thing on there. i would absolutely pick C, but the axe>machete. Cause fuck fighting velociraptors. I am not going to risk fighting dinosaurs, so hiding, setting traps by rope, and capturing small herbivores by the book is best, plus all that free time will be mitigated with a book of any kind. but the machete is real crap in comparison with the axe. gotta love axes, but then again, chopping wood with anything to make shelter is gonna make some noise and leave one's attention off their surroundings. the raptors are gonna be a real threat to any option if they're as coordinated and swift in jurassic park.

C. I don't know anything about survival so the book is probably my only chance. Also I know machete's are pretty versatile.

If you can start a fire, you wouldn't need the purifying pills, so B is wasting a slot, A is stupid because dinosaurs probably don't give a fuck about bullets, and firing a gun would attract all of them.

Also - there's the questionable validity of my original premise that the island is teeming with predators. A normal jungle has jaguars, etc, but an average person would probably be safe to walk around for a while without meeting one.

I think even for a non-survivalist, A might be a decent option because once you find some ruins you might be able to use them as a shelter/fort, as well as possibly finding additional supplies there (possibly even ropes, axes, lighters, etc). Or you would get eaten.

I really don't see why everyone's writing off the survivalist book, though. Doesn't it tell you how to do everything?

Water purifying is only necessary assuming that all the water on the island is contaminated. Does anyone know how likely that is? because otherwise you're going to need to boil everything using the fire you don't have.

Also, with B, how do any of you plan on feeding yourselves? You're going to have to forage and will probably get eaten in the process.

A. The iodine pills and flint from B are useful, but only in speeding things up. You can just boil water, and make fire without. The book from C might be useful, but you can figure most of that out. And you can just make rope.

Something you need to understand. Water Purification tablets kill the bacteria in your stomach. They are designed to be used as emergency short term use only. One years worth of those pills would have you gut pretty much sanitized.

C - I try to stay on the coast, hide, learn to trap and fish and make fire. There's no way I survive for 3 years without a dinosaur finding/eating me.
B- same
A- I set off quietly and carefully looking for ruins. I might get eaten, depending on how many predators there are, but in the real world you don't have jungles teeming with predators, they're few and far between (because if there were too many they would starve). I find 'ruins' (which could include tons of useful supplies, including food), get the ammo, and hopefully use the ruins as a shelter. Maybe there's even a gameboy w/ solar charger.

I could see people suggesting to choose B and build a shelter in the trees, but we're not monkeys, you guys, you're going to have to come down from there to get food and water, and that's the perfect time to get killed.
