but theres the chance of burning your self on that sword you fucking idiot
wouldn't another lightsaber sliding down the beam just cut through the emitter instead of hitting the beam guard?
No the enemys saber would cut the cross gaurd modules
>>582731936
A lightsaber doesn't work like an actual sword. You could try to argue that the cross-guard things would work in a 1 on 1 situation where the blades lock, you could totally stab someone's face with that. But that's retarded. These are lightsabers, which are known to cut through its own metal + the crystals inside them. If blades were locked, the saber would just cut through the little guard.
That L-Saber looks gay as fuck. Super mega faglord gay. They would have to be super careful or they cut there own hands off

>>582731740

>>582731740
I think the two blades on the sides are excess energy from a faulty crystal, more like exhaust ports than blades. That's why they don't have the clean lightsaber look and shape.
>>582732524
Only if the saber stayed completely still while the other slid down. A single movement would make it impact the crossguard as it should.
>>582731740
What if those aren't actual blades? Looking at the trailer the saber looks either old as fuck, or jerry-rigged. It's not a constant beam, it looks like flowing fire. I think it's a shoddy saber and those are exhaust vents for when it first powers up. The thing doesn't even hum right, it sounds like it's going to blow up. I would love to see some random dude make a shitty lightsaber and try to take on jedi.

You can't bitch about impracticality and then not assume the space wizards haven't figured out the details when your average toddler figure this bit out.
>>582733895
Coupled with that, a saber hilt would be fucking USELESS, as when sabers collide, they do not slide on each other, their physics don't work that way. There is literally no reason to have

Depends on the material used for the handguard. They have some kind of material in the star wars universe that kind withstand a lightsaber for brief periods of time.
>>582734186
There's also no reason for the dudes who fight force users to not use guns that use shot, since the projectiles are faster, not easily visible in flight and instead of being deflected by energy weapons simply turn into molten liquid and melt the poor bastard's face off if he accidentally blocks one.
However, people in a society where these guns exist, are fairly easy to obtain since dirt farmers on some fuckistan moon can have them and there's FTL travel to get them to you still don't prepare these weapons even when knowingly going up against force users.
It's not a fucking realistic universe.

basically old lightsabers weren't as good with heat exhaust [or whatever the fucking word is] so they needed those side nubs to vent the heat out so the lightsaber wouldn't get overheated and melt, so those mini-sabers are really just flames, and the reason there are those short metallic nubs before the flames come out is so the wielder's hand doesn't accidentally slide into the flames during combat or doing a rave show like obi-wan and anishit
but who fucking knows, maybe jabrams is doing something different with an older design of the lightsaber
It's pretty clear that's an unrefined lightsabre.
I like where this is going, the sith are the ones that are scratching at the bottom of the barrel, finding the old ways and reverting back to a time when they made their own equipment with the crystals. The rule of two is an effort to constantly refine the sith and prevent infighting.
The way it used to work was lesser sith constantly teamed up to take out powerful ones and so on, meaning that the sith were always getting weaker and had to work in teams.
By a master training an apprentice until the apprentice surpasses them and kills them, each sith is better than the one before.

The crossbar is just a guard for the user's hand. The lightsaber goes all the way in so if the other guys blade slid down it would cut only the top of the crossguard and then hit the hidden part of the lightsaber.

theres a lot of butthurt about blocking/sliding/slicing thru blades and all that. i dont think those blades are meant for blocking, theyre meant for stabbing and slicing.
sith are all about getting the edge on the opponent. inb4 "hur dur you might stab yourself". in the siths eyes its worth the risk; if the user swings and the main blade misses or is blocked, a quick jab of the hilt will punch that side blade right into his opponents face. much quicker than sweeping the entire blade back around for another attack, and sneaky shit like that gives sith fat boners
not to mention the unstable blade, which is all sorts of double-edged sword. higher damage and unpredictability at the risk of self-harm. sith dont give a shit if it makes them potentially stronger

Alright nerds. Listen up. Yes. It would work.
The only thing that this lightsaber would not be practical for is normal lightsaber combat, in that being able to spin it around and do acrobatics would be difficult. We cannot treat this as a normal lightsaber, just as we can't treat the combat styles of a saberstaff, dual-wielded lightsabers, guard shoto sabers, and all the other various kinds.
A normal lightsaber is used for combat similarly to how short swords such as a katana may be used. This lightsaber is more of a long sword. If you pause the video when the lightsaber is at its longest shown, it still extends off the screen. Which means this is a long ass bladed lightsaber which would be more similar to a longsword rather than a katana. With a longsword, you aren't going to be doing tricks and rotating that. Simple powerful swings with a long reach. This type of light saber would've been great for Darth Vader in the original trilogy as he didn't spin his blade around.
>>582751527
it would make more sense if they were portable lightsaber daggers that the sith can take out and stab someone in the face when they are in a "blade clash" situation.
>>582732391
Are you sure you're using that word correctly?
>>582731740
COLBERT GET OFF 4CHAN, YOU HAVE A SHOW TO RUN!
As for this being a crossguard, it is slightly impractical. Yes, as the way Colbert described it, it could be a connected blade on the inside and the metal cross section is to simple control the blades as well as to protect the wielder's hand. You could cut through that section if it was made of an average metal, but there are materials, such as Mandalorian iron and cortosis, which are resistant to lightsaber blades. But why not just make the entire guard out of these materials as well? The added weight is one reason. But maybe this isn't a guard.
Another one of the plausible explanations is that these small lightsabers which make the "crossguard" isn't actually a crossguard but exhausts. For the blade to be that long, a lot of power must be used. The sith are known to use synthetic crystals which are more powerful, which is why their sabers are red and which is why this one has the flame appearance and plasma coming off the blade. It is unstable. Unstable crystals have been used before in the SW universe and there are accounts of them breaking the hilts. This is why the idea of these small lightsabers being exhausts makes sense. The exhausts allow extra exits for the excess power from the lightsaber. Even looking at them, they seem more flame like.
Also, the wielder of this blade is rumored to be a cyborg (think General Grievous) and parts of his body and limbs could be made of those lightsaber resistant materials. Imagine a sith badguy who could not be destroyed in lightsaber combat. He would have amazing defense, and awesome offense with the power and range from the length of that blade.
>>582752493
but what makes longswords powerfull is the weight behind the blade, the impact. A lightsaber only weighs as much as the hilt. the longer the blade the easier it is for an enemy to leverage their blade against yours.
>>582733895
Fucking this. I'll bet that it may be the explanation.
>>582752370
>>582751731
lightsabers have had the exact same construction since the great hyperspace war, and presumably even before then. which means they havent changed in over 5000 years. 30 more aint gonna change shit
>>582752526
actually it would make sense for them to have a dozen "light balls" gold ball sized plasma balls that you can switch on and off with the force and fly them around and shoot them at people with the force.
>>582752995
yes. I bet those are none harmful beams / vents
Abrims just trolled the whole fan base and we'll all have mud on our face when the design is explained.
>>582752862
With his body being made from resistant materials, there is no threat posed from the exhausts, even if they were not exhausts and were smaller blades.
Other potential is that there could be a switch allowing the user to select which one of the three ports the blade fully extends from to allow for more variety of combat.
Imagine holding the blade in your fist as if you were to bunch someone and it extending alongside your arm or extending away from you, allowing the user to use a punching motion in combat with the smaller ports giving off the smaller blades. It would allow for very versatile combat.
Either way, yes. This new lightsaber will work but is not practical for traditional lightsaber combat. We just have to wait and see what they will do with it.

>>582731740
>>582752958
I get that, but at the same time, this is a variety of lightsaber. It isn't a longsword. I was using that as a comparison for the length and style of combat.
The advantage of this lightsaber could come from the power of the extra strong and unstable blade. A stronger blade is an advantage on its own. But it also provides extra length for increased range. And you still get the advantages of quick swings with the light weight.

real swords will bite into each other and not slide if they are in edge-to-edge contact, sometimes the edge can bite into the flat a little and not slide. The only time sharp swords will really slide is if they are flat to flat.
>>582744136
how does adding EXTRA protection somehow mean it's worse than an "original" lightsaber?
The new lightsaber presumably still has 360 degrees of "sharpness", and can still attack in any direction, it just as some extra protection.
>>582753090
no, cuz they would be reflected by other light sabers.
thats exactly what the rifles are in the series... light saber bullets basically.
>>582745669
only if you're a retard who would be smacking his crossguard on his arms with a real sword.
Have you ever actually handled a sword?
>>582731740
Whether it works or not, you can bet the fucking nigger will steal it.
>screenshot from yesterday's colbert report
>>582731740
I'm pretty sure if you built that thing you would know how to use it properly, and even then who says the way this guy fights is gonna involve a lot of pointless spinning that would make the crossguard dangerous?
>>582752493
my nigga
exactly.
are people really arguing the plausibility of a weapon that would pretty much melt your hand if you tried to hold it?
they're fucking movies, people.
What happens if you hold the saber close to your face and accidentally poke a hole in your skull with the side blade?

Laser cant just extend out of laser, you need some sort of projector.

those "blade clashs" are a staple of hollywood, and real swordfighting arts have easy solutions and techniques to use if you're in that situation. It's just used in movies because it's dramatic or whatever
For me this is a good idea to add a handguard on a lightsaber, seeing how luke, vador, count doku etc etc got their hands cut, but what bothers me is that it has little "handles" that are plainly ridiculous...a lightsaber blade stops a lightsaber blade, a lightsaber handle just gets cut as easily as paper...
As for the rest, just go read fastcodesign ??? com/3039210/in-defense-of-the-new-star-wars-lightsaber?utm_source=zergnet.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=zergnet_333634
The guy has a good point about the "brutal/unexperimented sith warrior", seeing how the blade looks unstable and sounds weird, just go check it
As long as the hilt is made of phrik I don't see why not.
>>582752958
what? no......who told you that?
Could the cross guard be set on a different crystal? Training lightsabers don't physically harm yet can hold back another saber. Maybe, just maybe it is just a weaker beam that blocks. Anakin got his hand chopped off and I'm sure he wished his saber had one
>>582756860
that's common star wars knowledge brah.
>>582756690
Oh I know already, I just got a kick out of Colbert saying the same stuff
>>582757107
>Anakin got his hand chopped off and I'm sure he wished his saber had one
Anakin got his hand lopped off by an 88 year old man, pathetic.
>>582731740
Tfw none of you realize that those things coming out of the hilt are projectile light Sabre missiles.
>>582756039
Look out everyone, we've got a master swordsman here
>>582756691
yeah most swords would break or rapidly dull in real life if they clashed as much as in hollywood. Real swordfights are like 20 seconds long.
>>582757282
I'm talking about the bullshit about longswords being "powerful" because of the weight behind the blade
>>582752958
actually in the first movies book adaptation, they specify that lightsaber have actually a strong rotationnal inertia (i don't remember how they justify it) and magnetic fields, hence the impression of heaviness when they swing and clash em around in a fight...the props on stage were so light they could have fenced with it single handedly, but Lucas directed them explaining that inertia thing etc
Just look for "lightsaber inertia" on google, tons of fanboys explained it better than me ;)
>>582731740
There is a theory that the cross guard is just exhaust ports because the saber looks unstable. besides that, people forget that the force is a thing, do you think jedis/sith wouldn't use it to have an extra strong grip onto the hilt.
