A cross guard lightsaber, like the one shown in the trailer, IS cannon. The reason they are seen so rarely is due to the fact that 3 separate emitters are required to produce the guard. Although, the one in the trailer does seem to be of poor quality due to the very square shape of the guard. Glad to see the old cannon is being used

To me, I didn't hate it because of the practicality or the way that it looked. Granted I don't like the way it looks and also it isn't very practical. The reason I didn't like it was because it was the first real look into the new star wars, and with the prequels being shit I felt hope that this would make up for them. Then the first fucking thing they show off is this cross guard sabre and all I could think about was "huh, so... Instead of Darth Maul's double sabre they did a hilt sabre."
