Swefag here. So, Linux, what's your excuse for not using it /b/?

Only a fool would take anything posted here as fact.

I can't find any excuses for not using it.
But I don't need to either, because ArchLinux is what my system boots into.

on xubuntu right now. Two servers in the basement ( Ubuntu 9.04 and 12.04 ). I have 5 raspberry pis ( Debian ) and and ODROID U3 running xubuntu. Use Fedora and Centos at work. Your post is invalid

I run Linux on several servers, but on the desktop it still feels clunky compared to win and mac. I run windows on my gaming machine, and osx on my work machine. The year of linux on the desktop has not yet arrived.

>>
>>581825209
The raid card on the one is ancient it is just a file server, there is no driver beyond 9.04 for it.

One raspberry pi runs the tv for the kids in the car, two are dedicated to my home brewing. One is in the master bedroom as the media player, and the last one is used for playing around with arduinos. The ODROID is the media player in the main tv room

>>581824916
I don't like that unity shit. In Xubuntu you can near enough customize xfce to look like windows.
>>
Linux will never be acceptable on the desktop because it takes a corporation to get the people together and make it good. Open source works well for a lot of software but not something that required good ui, actual art, someone with a unifying vision and ability to not change everything all the time.

In other words Mac has the best desktop followed by windows followed by nothing.
>>
>>581825574
Uhm, you know that Xubuntu is Ubuntu too right? Just because it has another default DE, doesn't mean it's a different OS.

I mean, you can install XFCE and remove Unity if you want. There's nothing stopping you from doing this.

Xubuntu doesn't come with a lot of the crap Ubuntu puts in. It's more efficient for older systems.
>>
>>581826174
Again, you can just remove unity and everything related to it...

Seriously, my Ubuntu installation is just a Ubuntu minimal and then I added the components I needed.

Why would you shit on Ubuntu and call it babbys first Linux and then proclaim that you use Ubuntu yourself?

Your lack of knowledge of what a desktop environment is tells me you're pretty new to Linux. Not that there is anything wrong in being new, but you probably shouldn't post maymays about Ubuntu.

Fedora is the best OS. Linux is very user friendly, however, not stupid friendly.
>>
>>581823153
I like windows, I've always used it (obviously as its the case for most people) and I know how it works, I can easily fuck around with most of it and if I need something more complex done or fixed I can speak to a regular human being who'll give me a reasonable, coherent answer.
Plus I dont really like how the interface looks, a lot of the different versions look like half assed OSX clones and I'm not overly into macs either, nice as they are.
Before anyone starts ranting and raving I don't want to learn l33t haxor skills and have to spend hours modifying a metal box to behave how I want it to, I want the computer I spend hard earned money on to play video games, run youtube and let me do the odd bit of word processing, with minimal fucking around

nothing commercial works on linux without shitloads of plugins and wasting time with emulators so just going with Mac/PC. Just coz you wanna be a hipster nerd it doesn´t make the platform useful
>>

I went from slackware -> redhat -> mandrake -> fedora -> ubuntu I disagree
>>
>>581827007

Yes, this must be why Oracle, IBM, HP, Red Hat, Google, Amazon, Facebook etc all use it for their servers and infrastructure.
>>
>>581825865
Sorry I meant a corporation that actual wants to make a world class desktop os
>>
>>581827205
Servers and infrastructure sure but that's where the actual computer/software experts play with it, I can imagine half of amazons staff don't even know what linux is, it's cheaper to use computers and programs that the majority of their staff are likely to know
>>
>>581827284

Because adobe creative suite.
>>

Their employees working at the warehouses, sure.

However, their employees working at their insanely large data centres do know what it is for sure.

What languages I know and could program in? Or what I use at work?
>>

Both.
>>
>>581827643
C,C++, Java, Perl, Python, Ruby, C#, I could go on, then again I'm 47 and I';ve been coding since I was in high school
>>
>>581827892
Well, the languages I know well enough to put on my CV and would be comfortable to do an entire project in are:
C
C++
Java
JavaScript
Python
PHP
Bash (well, wouldn't like it, but could if I had to)

Languages I know, but don't know well enough to do something considerable in:
Assembly
R
VHDL

Languages I use at work:
C and C++ mostly. Python if I have to script something quick and dirty.

Right now I'm involved in a project where the software joins a multicast group and then extracts closed captioning data from MPEG video streams.

>Any framework you are using ?
Just standard C++11 plus some POSIX for the networking stuff.

>What IDE ?
I like Eclipse because it just works. However, for my hobby projects I use vim.
>>
>>581827643
Well, du'h, computers are pretty dumb machines, they don't do anything by themselves, you have to write code to make them work.
I write most small utilities in bash, and lately I've started using php-cli for shell scripts too, because, it's so easy.. For real programs, I write C, C++ and sometimes if it should be done quickly and easy, Java.

In b4 "How do I learn 2 code?":
Start writing code.. No school or nothing is needed for that. But you do need to enjoy it, coding for money but without pleasure must be torture, so don't ever settle on a job where you write boring code.
