Most news sources are reporting that it was a webpage that saved shit on the server, with the silent consent of their users.

It wasn't the SnapSave app it was Snapsaved.com - an online service which logged in as the user to Snapchat's servers and was therefore logging all images and usernames sent to the logged in account. Needless to say that site is now offline.
