Horror tends to be a good genre for the low-budget, kinda shitty tier films. Money restrictions force them to be conservative with actually showing the budget-tastic antagonist/gore, so they actually do it with good cinematography. Once you go high budget they want to get their money's worth out of the monster&guts and overexpose it to the point it isn't scary/shocking anymore.

"Event Horizon" is a pretty good almost exception to the trend.
