The only newcomer to Makuuchi: Mitakeumi

Heya Dewanoumi
Name Hisashi Omichi
Ring Name History Mitakeumi
Rank Maegashira #11
Date of Birth December 25, 1992
Place of Birth Nagano
Height 178.0cm

Favorite Grip/Techniques /tsuki, oshi

"A Dewanoumi Beya rikishi in his first-ever makunouchi basho, and only his third as a sekitori, Fukuoka will be only his fifth tournament since joining the sport.

He is still a long way off being able to sport a mage seen atop rikishi in the lower four divisions, let alone an oicho-mage worn by those in the top two divisions. But will the 22-year-old man from Nagano succeed where so many other Japan-born hopefuls have failed?"
>>
>Banzuke topics, from the official sumo website

Hakuho becomes the fourth rikishi in all history to reign the Yokozuna rank for 50 tournaments.

Goeido faces his second Ozeki kadoban. His first was in the 2015 January tournament. The previous Ozeki kadoban occurred with Kotoshogiku in the July tournament. It was the 131st kadoban since the July 1969 tournament.

Tochiozan holds a Sekiwake rank for three tournaments in a row. This is his fourth consecutive tournament at a Sanyaku rank.

Myogiryu holds a Sekiwake rank for two tournaments in a row. This is his fifth consecutive tournament at a Sanyaku rank.

Tochinoshin holds a Komusubi rank for two tournaments in a row. This is also his second consecutive tournament at a Sanyaku rank.

Yoshikaze returns to the Komusubi rank for the first time in nine tournaments. The previous time he held a Komusubi rank was in the 2014 May Grand Sumo Tournament.

Mitakeumi is the first rikishi from the Dewanoumi Beya to make his Makuuchi Division debut since the present oyakata inherited the heya on February 1, 2014. The previous was Futeno in the who was promoted in the 2004 March Grand Sumo Tournament.
He is the fifth rikishi from the Nagano Prefecture to make his Makuuchi Division debut post WWII, following Owashi who was promoted in the 1972 November Grand Sumo Tournament.
Mitakeumi is the 83rd former amateur sumo collegian competitor to reach the Makuuchi Division, with the previous being Hidenoumi in the July tournament. He is the fourth former member of the Toyo University sumo team to earn this promotion, with the previous being Sagatsukasa who was promoted in the 2010 March Grand Sumo Tournament.
He is in a second place tie for the fastest promotion into the Makuuchi Division since the Showa Era, earning this promotion with only four tournaments since his Makushita special debut.

>Continued

Shohozan returns to the Makuuchi Division after four tournaments. The previous time he held a Makuuchi Division rank was in the 2015 March Grand Sumo Tournament.

Toyohibiki returns to the Makuuchi Division after two tournaments.

This is the first Juryo Division debut from the Takasago Beya since Oga was promoted in the 2006 May Grand Sumo Tournament.
He is the 17th rikishi from the Kanagawa Prefecture to make his Juryo debut. The previous was Asasoyo who was promoted in the 1993 March Grand Sumo Tournament.

Azumaryu returns to the Juryo Division after five tournaments. The previous time he held a Juryo Division rank was in the 2015 January Grand Sumo Tournament.

Daido returns to the Juryo Division after two tournaments.

I know how you feel, I start work at the same time matches start, no choice but to watch recordings

You'll at least make it home for the second half, unless you have a long commute

Finally found the thread, I search on the NHK world site and it seems like they are not streaming the basho. Please someone prove me wrong.

Very solid day one, what a showing from Yoshikaze.

That last match was something else.

Mitakeumi was a nice surprise too, hope he continues to do well. I wanna see that hair flopping about this basho.

I also hope more people join the discussion.

For those of you still looking for a way to be able to watch live, it looks like Mongolian UBS TV plays the Makuuchi matches live with Mongolian commentary

http://tv.onair.mn/watch/ubs , You'll have to register an account but it's easy

Live should start about 11pm PST
>>
>>758028
And it looks like they have a two week archive of everything, here's the full 2 hours of Day 1 with mongolian commentary from their archive http://tv.onair.mn/948734/watch_archive/ubs/2015-11-09
>>
>>758029
My mistake, that's actually Day 2, day 1 is completely mislabeled in their archives

Day 1 mongolian archive:
http://tv.onair.mn/938908/watch_archive/ubs/2015-11-08

Starts under "Business news" and continues into the next two unlabelled programs
>>
>>758020
Man I really hope Mitakeumi keeps at it.
>>
As a mongolian man I am so proud of hakuho
>>
>>758022
Lots of solid pushing and thrusting today, but not too many outstanding matches

Osunaarashi was pretty great though
>>
I hope mah niggaz Osunaarashi and Amuuru do well this basho.

Also Yoshikaze looks like a beast in his first two matches.
>>
looks like the old hakuho is back

>>
>>758639
Some pretty cool matches, really liked Ikoi, and Osunaarashi against Hakuho was pretty amazing

>>759022
Osunaarashi just having crazy good matches against the Yokozuna

The crowd sure didn't like Hakuho's henka though, wow

>>759048
I've never heard it mentioned, he sounded like a damn lion today though
>>
>>759072
>The crowd sure didn't like Hakuho's henka though, wow

For some odd reason, Hakuho didn't seem to like it ether. Look at his face he after he does it.
>>
>>759084
think he just wanted to jump aside to start pushing from a better angle and didnt expect his opponent to fall forward from just that
>The crowd sure didn't like Hakuho's henka though, wow
check the youtube comments too, people saying how their whole day was ruined because of that. jesus how pathetic are they
>>
>>759084
It does look like he's disappointed in the result, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt

Not that it would be bad if he had intentionally done it

>>759099
People are so funny about it, I'd prefer to see a really spirited several minute long match too, but you've gotta keep your opponents on their toes

Osunaarashi needs to get onto his A game though.

Wwe is better. Sumo?! LOL

he lost 2 fights because of a bad starting charge.
against teruno he wanted to push the face, but the hands slipped and he ended up having really bad overhooks

First time ever seeing sumo.

Watching that video.

What do the numbers next to the sumos names mean (13w 5-1) for example I assume it's some ranking?

Has any sumo ever been knocked out of the ring and crushed a crowd member or someone at the side of the ring?

>>
>>767537
I also advice you to take a lot at the pastebin in the OP. Is sort, useful and concise
>>
Great video in the OP.
Always liked the idea of Sumo but never seen any matches. Going to have to keep up on this
>>
>>767537
Almost all of the fights you will see have sumo wrestlers from five different ranks.

Yokozuna(three wrestlers atm) Highest rank.

Ozeki(four wrestlers atm) second highest rank

Sekiwake(2 wrestlers) third highest rank

Komusubi(2 wrestlers) fourth highest rank

Maegashira(31 atm) fifth highest rank

Sometimes you will see somebody from Juryo fight in the first two matches
>>
>>767821
If I recall correctly as of the november weigh in, Sadanofuji is the heaviest at 208kg.

Hard to believe he's heavier than both Ichinojo and Gagamaru, he doesn't show it in the same way

And just for fun, here's the heaviest wrestler of all time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPopEIxiBPk , his weight was a huge detriment though and he never made it to the pro leagues
>>
Day 8:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sO4ctAhz3c
>>
>>767537
5-1 is his record for the current tournament.

And yeah 13w is ranking for the current tournament. They're all listed in the OP image, so 13w would be M13 on that chart. Each wrestler is designated as east or west for organization or something.

If the 13w guy gets a winning record this tournament his ranking will go up next tournament, or down for a losing record. It's pretty simple, read the OP links and just watch, you'll figure it out.
>>
>>767539
inccorect on "lifetime match history"
its "liftime match history against current opponent"
>>
>>768397
Thought that was obvious, otherwise there'd be a score under both their names

It would be quite a feat to get to Yokozuna with only 32 wins
>>
>>768128
lol whats with all the shitty henkas today.
i love the hand gesture hakuhou does when he wins
>>
Who keeps making all those noises during the matches?
>>
>>768656
if youre talking about the guy yelling "TARAGO TARAGO TARAGO TA"
its the ref(guy with fancy dress), saying to the fighters they are still inside the ring and to keep going
>>
>>768664

Ah yeah. Cheers.
>>
Terunofuji clearly not fit.
>>
>>767851
>Sadanifuji

Im very surprised if its correct. He never looks bigger than his opponent (I have a pity-following because he's so bad)

I read in another basho thread that it was Aoiyama.

Gagamaru is another guy who looks massive
>>
>>767851
Fattie lost right? He steps outside first
>>
>>769516
These are a bit out of date, from SumoDB, I know at the least Sadanofuji went up in weight last weigh in

Sadanofuji - 200.5kg
Gagamaru - 198.7kg
Aoiyama - 192.6kg
>>
>>769584
Amazing. I would never had taken Sadanofuji for a big guy
>>
>>768128
god damn hakuho just does not fall, he's the champ for a reason
>>
Day 9:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cbpVBOieX4
>>
>>770053
god damn big red
>>
This basho has been pretty dull so far, especially compared to the last one. We need more exciting yokozuna matches, some defeats too.
>>
>>770147

There has been great bouts nearly every day. Haramafuji today and Hakuho yesterday just to name two recent ones.
>>
>>770147
Lots of very high quality sumo this basho, it's been anything but dull. Not much of a yusho race though, which is unsurprising with Hakuho back in action.
>>
>>770147
Disagree, but as mentioned, more excitement in the yusho race would be good.

Kakukyu and Harumafuji have disappointed
>>
>>770053
Harumafuji v Ikioi was real great
>>
>>770053
fucken Yoshikaze

Day 10:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CQ70OrIapU
>>
It's much more fun when they show some emotion instead of being giant fat robots. Loved Hakuho's reaction.
>>
>>774490
>japan
>emotion
>>
>>774490
>>774585
It's taboo to show any emotion on the dohyo, but that's what makes it special when you see one of them crack a smile or something

Osunaarashi can never seem to keep it in, and it's so lovable
>>
>>774490
They are gonna grill him for it, also the henka
>>
>>774339
Wow Hakuho pulling a move straight out of Mainoumi's playbook and then grinning ear to ear after, the smug bastard

Crowd was real mad, that was great
>>
>>774339
I thought I was watching a gag reel of sumo today. All does fuckups.

Would you get slapped by Hakuhou for a million dollars? I wouldn't!
>>
That slap was hilarious and effective
>>
Day 12:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vrGdmgM45qI
>>
>>777579
Interesting to see Kakukyu and Hamurefuji go for brute force this time
>>
>>775920
Terunofuji wow
Nice throw by Kakuryu
And as everyone has said, great slap from Hakuho

>>777579
Takayasu vs Takarafuji was a wild ride
Osunaarashi's match is real good
Good fighting spirit from Kotoshogiku
>>
Oh shit Hakuho vs Haramufuji tomorrow

That Egyptian is unreal at staying in when he's right on the edge. He's up and his toes with a 300 pound man trying to push him out but he still makes them work for it
>>
>>777688
> Hakuho vs Haramufuji tomorrow

Oh shit, thought for sure they'd be saving that for day 15
>>
>>777691
Kakukyo is YE1 after winning last basho. So I guess Kakuryu-Hakuho was saved for last?
>>
>>777726
They usually seem to rearrange it a bit just for a high excitement final bout though

And Harumafuji could force a playoff if he beats Hakuho, maybe they don't want him to have to win 2 in a row though
>>
>>777742
Oh sure, im still very new to this. Have no idea is the schedules are set from day 1 and based on rankings or arranged at will
>>
>>777752
They only do one day in advance and it's decided by the judging committee, entirely at will

But within reason, they don't usually make M16s fight Yokozuna
>>
Amuuru really needs to gain some weight, he is being thrown all around the ring this basho.
>>
>>777898
He really does, but apparently he hates rice
>>
>>777904
>He really does, but apparently he hates rice

How is he living the life of a Rikishi and not eating enough rice? Man needs to suck it up and eat some more if he wants to wins.
>>
>>777904
>>777963
pfffft, you dont need to eat rice to get big, there's plenty of foods he can eat to bulk up. if the stable didnt control his diet...
>>
Day 13:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsW58YDln6k
>>
>>779110
You're right, but it's hard to live in Japan and not get rice served with everything. Not to mention the traditional chanko diet becomes troublesome.
>>
>>779262
>Not to mention the traditional chanko diet becomes troublesome.
why, just eat the soup, no rice needed
>>
>>779306
Fair, I'm no diet expert but I know the rice is considered important to the diet. Maybe that's just tradition though, high protein chanko without the rice should do the job.

>>
>>779667
Osunaarashi falling on his already injured knee does not bode well, I really hope he's okay
>>
We have a Basho lads! Haru played him like a fiddle

Guess both will play against Kakuryu in the last 2 days

Shouhuzan has also been impressive and still has a shot
>>
>>779704
>Guess both will play against Kakuryu in the last 2 days
kakuryu doesnt have a chance vs them from what we've seen of him this tourney.
teruno might give one a hard time but he's injured too so its probably gonna be a rematch from today to determine the winnar
>>
>>780130
The organizers will surely have a Yokozuna vs Yokozuna in the last 2 days. One of them will face Kakuryu for sure
>>
Osunaarashi, Toyonoshima and Kotoshogiku have all officially withdrawn citing injuries

Osunaarashi is in the hospital still for his knee

definitely liking this guy
>>
>>780711
>takekaze v aminishiki (6:10) - why isn't that considered a henka?
it is considered a henka.
henka just means you pull at the starting charge, but the actual technique is hatakikomi
>>
>>780734
oh okay good. the host of that channel is pretty good about tut-tutting henkas in his captions, thought I missed something
>>
>>780648
Terunofuji vs Hakuho is amazing, you can really see how much effort Terunofuji is putting in for his stablemate

Harumafuji is on fire too

Final day is going to be so good
>>
So in order for Hakuhou and Shouhouzan to be in the game for the cup Harumafuji needs to lose his match tomorrow thus causing a three way playoff?
>>
Teruno Hakuho was kinda bad

>>780950
Yes. Could had been giving a hardest rival tbqh
>>
Goeido gonna ride or die
>>
Harumafuji deserves the win. He's shown the highest quality of wrestling, especially in the last few days.

Does anyone remember who he lost to?

Oosuranashi on day 2

Haruma was dreadful during the first days. That third day match vs Aoiyama was what the cool kids here would call refball
>>
>>780973
>Teruno Hakuho was kinda bad

Man that's harsh, it wasn't the most spectacular fight on a technical level, but injured terunofuji's fighting spirit really showed and that's what made it great

>>781490
He was pretty shaky, made up for it with that completely dominant showing against Hakuho though

>Hakuhou after day 12

>Hakuhou after day 15
>"Fuck"

- I know is silly to brag a "I told you so" in an anon forum but not only both Haru and Hak and to fight Kakuryu as I said but he ended up deciding the basho. Hell, he pretty much saved his own basho with that last fight

- The question is not if but when Terunofuji will be Yokozuna. Of course 4 YZ at the same time seems too much but people are already talking about Hak retiring soon. He's only 30 and younger than HF but there's has been some talk about his lack of ambition after winning it all. Also those 2 henkas and the slap adds him unnecessary flak

- 12-3 is a good record for any fighter, for any yokozuna and specially an injury-recovering one. But when we are talking about the best of all time some people will still talk. The worst thing is, as it has been mentioned, that he lost the last 3 bouts in a row. He was already showing some weakness the fights before but Hak imploded at the end

- I really wanted Gouedou to lose. He's squatting a Ozeki spot that other rikishi deserve more

- After winning the cameras kept a close-up of Haru face for a long 10 mins. Bad idea. Poor guy, acne really fucked his shit up

- The Mongolian broadcast was great. They just link the jap broadcast except for a few mins in which they talk in a hilariously shitty studio (seriously, babby youtuber-tier). The main challenge is the lack of English/roman script but, between recognizing faces and listening to the names being pronounced I could identify about 66% of fights and all the important ones

>Of course 4 YZ at the same time seems too much but people are already talking about Hak retiring soon
he said he was planning to do it for another 5 years but i think he's gonna retire sooner if he starts to lose 25% of his bouts(he looks like an emotional guy and when he starts losing its gonna make him lose even more)

>- I really wanted Gouedou to lose. He's squatting a Ozeki spot that other rikishi deserve more
i dont know about you but all the ozekis besides teruno look average as fuck to me. kiseno and kotoshou just seem like twins with their style and they always just win with a straightforward yorikiri.
but in sumo a win is a win, people get the ranks they deserve even if they have a boring style

While I agree with some of your points I think "The Hakuhou" will win in the next tournament for sure.

I wanted Goeido to lose so bad, none of the Ozeki are any good, besides maybe Terunofuji when he isn't injured, but he hasn't been around long enough to see if he's consistent at the rank

But really Ozeki are supposed to contend for the Yusho, and none of them have been
>>

kotoshogiku is a lot more flamboyant during the salt throwing than any of the other rikishi

one thing I don't like about kintamaya's videos is that he cuts out all the pre-bout stuff

watch on this channel next basho
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjEHJ_fQxC3wgXcIazGWt3Q

he records the english language broadcast and gives some of his own commentary, though he only does the top half a dozen or so matches each day

Not that Jason is bad, but the Mongolian broadcast is the only way to see everything in-between the fights without paying for a TV channel

And the ceremony stuff is great

>watch a channel where a guy talks over the fight

I want to hear the fight, not him. Plus he records the matches with a handheld camera.

Seems to be the only way of posting them that the Kyokai doesn't get mad about, they've taken down a number of channels from before he was around.

You probably know this, but SumoDB has a hide results option that's really helpful for following along with any broadcast. Also nice because you get previous match history and any other data you want to throw in there.

>But really Ozeki are supposed to contend for the Yusho, and none of them have been
this really is one of the big problems right now.

all the yokozuna seem to have problems with the lower sanyaku or M1-5 people, while they have records like 40-3 against the ozekis.(kakuryu being the exception, but he's pretty new at yokozuna rank)
in a sense, the current ozekis besides teruno are just acting like gatekeepers, usually winning with a 8-7 score to just keep their spot as well

The quality of his videos are fine though. They are great for someone like me who doesn't know much about sumo. I learn a lot more from his ramblings than I do from the subtitles on Kintamayama's videos.

his quality is better than fine, even though it's camera work

the only downside is the lack of complete coverage

Different people like different stuff.

Jason's videos have gotten much better quality than they used to be and his commentary is decent for people that enjoy commentary.
