There are many Kung Fu styles that include Animal forms or techqniques, i.e. Choy Lay Fut (sometimes written "Choy Lee Fut") or Hung Gar have a "Five Animal Form".

Generally the differnt animal represent differnt fighting tactics/movements/mindsets, which is very Kung Fu specific way of training. So wether or not they are called animal forms, many Kung Fu styles contain differnt fighting strategies. Jsut check some school near you and ask the coach or read teh curriculum.

Oh yeah, and since this is /asp/: no, you won't get a UFC fighter by training Kung Fu. And it's good if they have a sparring group.

But Kung Fu is fun as fuck, so as long as you don't plan to be the next World Champ, go for it.

Never been to London, but animal Gong Fu is rare abroad. I advise something like Emei style overturning fist, or "Shaolin attack from heavens" style. Those I've found in the States so there's probably some in the UK.

Kung fu can be pretty fun. It has a different perspective on some things, and it's a neat mind bender. Can't say anything about practicality, as that varies from teacher to teacher and school to school, but don't worry about the haters in this thread, you do you.

Like someone earlier said, Hung Gar includes different animal forms, but what you're looking for sounds more like distinct animal styles, like "southern mantis" and "fuijan(sp?) white crane". Honestly, most kung fu studios won't call themselves "Tom's White Crane Fighting" or whatever, so you kinda have to just hit a bunch of studios and ask them what style(s) of kung fu they do. And as someone else said, try to find a place that spars, they tend to be less "the holy text!" about form and more practical in application. Sparring types just have their head on a little better, 'cause they spend more time trying to keep it from being knocked off.

I was at my parents' place last weekend, and I saw the dogs fighting.

I've just taken up BJJ and MMA. I saw one dog bite the other's leg (they've got thin as hell legs remember) as a form of takedown, then instantly jump on top of it, applying weight on the chest as it went for the neck.

They didn't injure eachother or anything, but I was surprised at similarities.

You get an awful lot of McDojo's with a martial art so associated with Hollywood as Kung Fu. There is a decent Shaolin place in London that's pretty unique as it incorporates a crazy conditioning regimen (I think you're required to be a certain level of fit to be allowed to take part in the acrobatics classes).

Ignore the naysayers. Sure, Kung Fu may not be as good as Brazilian Meme Jitsu in a controlled MMA environment, but most fights you'll get into IRL wont be 1-on-1 against a trained professional on a padded floor, cultivationg pretty much any physical discipline will give you an almost infinite advantage against a clueless drunken arm-swinger.

For the record, I found Kung Fu more fun and physically fulfilling than the Judo I did as a kid, although the latter did stop me getting my ass beat by way bigger guys several times later in life. To each their own I suppose.

I think Rodell's club might as well be on the moon for all the good it does a Londoner.
But in general I also think almost all TCC guys are a bit faggy and fond of mystic hoopla compared to Docherty, who's extremely primarily a fighter, won an East Asian Open and shit like that.
