They put him in a match with Brock Lazy who didn't want to do any spot in a spot fest match. Then more talented people entered the company, and he figured he may just as well receive a paycheck for minimum effort while banging Renee Young.

I don't think anything that went wrong was his fault. His run as WWE champion was good until his feud with ziggler. He then feuded with styles who, unfortunately for him, was white hot. Ambrose was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He's a reliable worker (he wrestled more matches than anyone else in the WWE last year) and is still the number two baby face on SD behind cena. He's also protected ever time he loses (styles never beat him clean)

I just wish he actually defended the IC championship and cut back on the goofy shit

Fucked around aimlessly in the card for quite some time while the other 2 former shield members were becoming world champions. That's what truly hurt his career and put him in the spot he's in now. He has slightly more main events than Rollins and slightly less than Reigns. They create an illusion that he's always in the midcard despite that not being true because they tried to secretly have a corporate-backed anti-corporate guy for smarks to cheer. It was working in 2015 but it got too obvious.

Like they tried to manufacture crowd sympathy with meta-kayfabe. Pitching the false idea that Dean was the odd man out. Dean is the only Shield member to pin Cena clean. Dean won the triple threat. As I said, he is right up there with Reigns and Rollins in total ppv main events. They entrusted him to singlehandedly keep the Shield relevant on Smackdown, and he's main evented every Smackdown exclusive ppv so far. Dean is a sham. Dean is a joke played on the audience. That's why he said "I'm Vince's favorite" on the podcast. He really is. His act is more goofy than the "HE'S SO UNPREDICTABLE AND CAH-RAZY!" thing the commentators try to sell.

Not winning the belt from HHH before Wrestlemania because "lol his foot was under the ropes by about an inch" was stupid and really slowed him down.

Make him an actual loose cannon like Stone Cold was and drop the goofy moves like the second rope rebound clothesline as well as the wandering talking style he does. Have his promos more to the point instead of "Hey I was walking down the street and hotdog stands blah blah blah"

More brawling! He is supposed to be nuts, have him just stomp away for ages on an opponent and get in their face when they are down and barely stop when the ref does a five count.

Revisionist history. The attitude going into Mania was that they were finally going to give Dean the spotlight he deserved, but it ended up being the most PG match of the night.

Dean vs HHH at Fastlane was a MOTY contender for sure, less than a month before Wrestlemania. He just came off of a great IC feud with Owens.

The Brock match sucked, but most people came out of that one thinking Dean got screwed over by booking again. It wasn't until the Asylum Match that opinions on him soured. Then he got a little momentum back, won MitB, won the belt, won the triple threat. All of that had a positive reaction. Then his promos became very monotone and his ringwork leaned on signatures even more than usual. Plus he stopped selling.

And then the podcast dropped. And then he wrestled Ziggler of all people at Summerslam in the literal middle of the card for a shitty tv-tier bout. That's what did it. He hasn't recovered since. It doesn't help that AJ and Miz both thoroughly shit on him in ring. Some people blamed Dolph for Summerslam until Miz put on consistently grade A matches with him. They slapped the IC belt on him and outed his relationship with Renee on tv as a desperate attempt to save face.
