Is Manami Toyota really that good or was she the Io Shirai of her generation?
>>2309411
you really have to watch manami toyota and apply comparative analysis methods with the other top wrestlers from her prime (1990 to 1996) to really understand why she was so culturally important for japanese wrestling
this being said half of her matches are botchfests
>>2308677

#rare Neko Nitta butt related.
>>2310338
What Neko Nitta matches are worth watching? Seen a bunch of people praise her for her Triangle Ribbon stuff but I can never tell if it's serious or not
>>2309411
>Is Manami Toyota really that good
Long story short: No. She's overrated. She relied way too much on her physical abilities (which were tremendous) and sacrificed psychology, story-telling, and match structure a lot of the time. She represented everything great AND everything bad about that Zenjo style of wrestling.
I remember the first time watching her matches and just feeling like something was off. Like she wasn't giving the matches any room to breathe and it was almost like a race to her. Was still entertaining of course. Io, whatever your opinion of her may be, at least knows how to structure a match with plenty of psychology. Toyota on the other hand never really learned how to do that. At least on a consistent basis. That's why when she started to decline physically she was never able to compensate like someone like Aja Kong managed to do. Kong is old as fuck and fat as fuck and is still able to have good-to-great matches whereas it's been many years since Toyota had a great match. And she's in better physical shape than Kong!
All that being said though she's still one of the greatest ever and athletically speaking Io isn't able to hold a candle to her.
>>2310338
>Some of the greats of the modern era had short yet memorable careers.
"greats" is pushing it.
Was Yuhi better than Io? Was Koguma better than Yoneyama?
"Great" in pro wrestling doesn't mean flash-in the-pan tug job fodder.
Riho aged out for you didn't she?
>>2310653
Where did I imply that they were better than anyone, you crazy son of a bitch? I don't evaluate talent by comparing them to other talent, I judge the talent based on their own merits. Koguma had great matches, as did Yuhi. Their careers were fruitful albeit short, they are joshi greats.
To answer one of your questions, I do prefer Koguma over Yoneyama.
Kevin Wilson loves Mil Clown. Ya'll need to find a new TJP waifu.

Seems like she made a conscious style change if you compare her earlier matches with her matches in her prime. In what way do you believe she sacrificed match structure and psychology? Her most pimped out matches do have stories to tell.
>She represented everything great AND everything bad about that Zenjo style of wrestling.
I read someone write she worked the house style louder and faster than anyone, so that's apt.
What would people say Ohata's best matches are? I've only seen her as part of Avid Rival and haven't seen anything of her Black Dahlia run - is it good? Saw her work heel on some random Daijo show and she seemed decent at it. Has she always been WAVE?
>>2311791
Kevin Wilson's favourite wrestlers of all time are Keiji Mutoh and Kana, no-one should ever pay attention to his old creepy ass
>>2314635
>Seems like she made a conscious style change if you compare her earlier matches with her matches in her prime.
No; that was just her hitting her prime. She naturally started wrestling faster, harder, and crazier.
>In what way do you believe she sacrificed match structure and psychology?
Almost every match she took charge of ended up being sprints and sprints ALWAYS sacrifice psychology and structure to a certain degree.
>Her most pimped out matches do have stories to tell.
And those stories are usually her opponent trying to calm her crazy ass down and actually work a subtle match.
>I read someone write she worked the house style louder and faster than anyone, so that's apt.
She was the Zenjo Style taken to its absolute extremes: ridiculous work rate, tons of action and tons of big spots. Not to mention a lot of fucking screaming.

She was S-OVATION before Wave, which ran Mariko Yoshida's IBUKI shows. Before that she was JD Star. She's been wrestling 10 years and started at 18.
She also was one of the early joshi at SHIMMER teaming with Hiroyo as the "Seven Star Sisters." She was also good in "+/- ZERO" I think they were called, a tag team with Mio Shirai.
>>2315634
She also wrestled in Senjo under an alt persona called Miyako Morino before she got run off by Satomeme's ego.
I'll have to get back on the list of matches, I need to find what's readily available on youtube and other places.

>>2319130
I've only watched a couple of NEO shows on DVD, but I enjoyed all of them. The match quality is up there, especially the tag team title matches. Passion Red and the Machine Guns are the best. Feel like Haruka Matsuo doesn't get the praise she deserves; she was quite good too.
>>2319143
Yeah, I'm interested in that late 2000s era with Passion Red etc. I'll maybe grab some DVDs at some point, it looks pretty cool and I want to see more Natsuki Taiyo

Rina & Kaho formed a tag team called "Fafrotskies (ファフãƒãƒƒã‚ーズ)" which is an abbreviation of "Falls from the Skies", in reference to the frogs/fish/coins raining from the sky phenomenon.
Rina is kind of edgy, she probably thought it sounded cool.

Yes, but the videos on their website are filmed by Stardom themselves so they don't have that nice TV quality with the camera angles and shit. Still perfectly watchable though and none of the matches are clipped. There's also no commentary which I prefer since I don't know what the hell they're saying anyways and I enjoy hearing all the adorable joshi grunts and groans.

Well that was just sad. All they did was practice a tumbling routine.
Watching an Ice Ribbon show from 2010 and I really miss Natsuki Taiyo lads
So who's going?
>>2336267
Yeah, it was great. I didn't understand the gimmick though, it was hard to follow.
>>2338576
60 minute Iron Man match. Started off with four 5 minute matches then the main 40 minute match.
>>2324525
Me too bro
>>2328885
Hi Kana!
Imagine how much stronger this squad would be if Kana didn't wimp out of Passion Red.
>>2336267
You have any more matches worth checking out?
>>2340655
There's a trillion old joshi matches to check out, but if you're wanting more team stuff then watch the greatest tag team trilogy in female wrestling history.

Which modern promotion would /joshi/ say has the best feuds? Not necessarily the best matches but just feuds that feel like they have any semblance of heat to them and that the women want to genuinely fuck each other up. 99% of wrestling, joshi or otherwise, completely lacks that whenever I watch it
inb4 none of them
>>2340702
Thanks. Will check these out later.
>>2341004
Good luck trying to find heated feuds in modern japanese wrestling,

Ignore him pal, you're a Quality Poster

Some joshi look at things as they are and ask "Why?", Miyako Matsumoto dreams of things that never were and asks "Why Not?"

Seems like Mio Momono is getting booked more regularly with Sendai Girls, pretty cool. She's looked good whenever I've seen her

That High Speed match she was in at SEAdLINNNG Integral-d was loads of fun.
>Mayu Iwatani mulling about retirement

>Superior haafu genetics/facial features

>Triple crown champion 9 months into her career
>Took Kairi Hojo and Yoko Bito to the limit in a time out draw
>The best member of Oedo Tai
>Undefeated in Stardom
>Will never betray /joshi/
>>2348608
The only place she's retiring to is Nanae's home for actual good wrestlers
>>2348776
Just watched an ARSION-style match with her mom. It was good. Rough around the edges though since neither of them looked 100% comfortable wrestling an ARSION-style match, but still good and still makes me wish we'd get more of this technical sexiness in joshi.
>>2348805
What match was this? Was it from Kimura's Battlarts run?
>>2348817
I've been checking out more ARSION/Yoshida stuff. My eyes have been opened.
>>2348832
>Yea from Battlarts. Is any of the other female stuff worth checking out?
I've watched some of Kana and Natsuki's BattleArts matches. I don't know if any of it is 'worth checking out' or even good as I'm not privy to this style of wrestling to know what constitutes a good match. Just interesting to see them grappling on the mat.
Here's some random Kana match from one of BattlArts' Queen Bee shows:

Is this good or is this just fetish wrestling?

>Is this good or is this just fetish wrestling?
I skimmed through the match and it seems to be more 100% shoot style grappling; which I'm not the biggest fan of.
BattlARTS is hybrid shootstyle / traditional pro wrestling stuff, it had all the usual shoot grappling/strikes but would often still use "big" moves for the big spots like outside dives etc, lot of junior heavyweight stuff mixed in with the shootstyle
It's more PWFG than RINGS
I haven't watched any of the joshi stuff on it though so I dunno if that'll be a bit more grounded. Kana specifically was trained by Yuki Ishikawa so she'd be a lot more mat-based than most in it I'm guessing
>>2348842
It was a 'B-Rule' match whatever that means. Most of the Queen Bee matches have proper pro wrestling, though.
>>2348850
>BattlARTS is hybrid shootstyle / traditional pro wrestling stuff, it had all the usual shoot grappling/strikes but would often still use "big" moves for the big spots like outside dives etc, lot of junior heavyweight stuff mixed in with the shootstyle
That's why I prefer Battlarts over stuff like UWF. Volk Han in RINGS was God though. That man was a genius. I could easily enjoy damn near every RINGS match he had. But yea full shoot style when they try to be as super realistic as possible can be quite tedious.
Shoot style + pro style mixed in a way where it feels completely organic is the best. Just watched an Alexander Otsuka match where he did a piledriver, a fisherman buster, AND a giant swing and it all felt completely organic to the first half of the match which was complete shoot style grappling. Okay maybe not the giant swing, but I loved how his opponent countered it the first time into a guillotine choke.
>>2348860
Yeah, it's not "pure" shootstyle but BattlARTS is easily my favourite promotion of that bunch. Otsuka in particular is such a versatile guy and was great at making that blend work together, it's a shame he doesn't get more recognition
>>2348875
Another funny thing about Battlarts was they also seemed to strike a HELL of a lot harder than other "pure" shoot promotions. Ishikawa in particular would just straight up punch dudes in the face like it was a legit MMA match. Ikeda also had one of the stiffest lariats I've ever seen.
>>2348883
Yeah, there's a quote somewhere out there from Ishikawa asking why he and Ikeda hit each other harder than any wrestlers ever hit each other, and his response is something like "we're not just hitting each other, we're hitting all the idiots who think that pro wrestling is fake and like a trained dance. When they see us fight then they don't know what to say" or something. Maybe that's him being a mark but his matches with Ikeda are awesome so he can say what he wants
If I remember correctly part of the ARSION girls' training was also that Yoshida made them attend BattlARTS seminars so liking both isn't a coincidence
>>2348895
>If I remember correctly part of the ARSION girls' training was also that Yoshida made them attend BattlARTS seminars so liking both isn't a coincidence
Yea I read that the ARSION girls trained with the Battlarts guys. Fuck, I wish this style of wrestling would make a comeback.
>>2348900
Me too bud. You're good people, have a happy Ikeda
god damn, agua was right all along
Is there any reason that Meiko specifically chose Sendai to start a promotion and name the promotion after it? She's not from there and as far as I know the only out out of the current roster who actually is from Sendai is DASH

He's a theater actor from what I've gathered. He was her special weapon during that match. No idea what the backstory may be.
