Its not so much it is too wrestling oriented, that is a great problem to have. WWE's problem is they don't mix it with great story-telling and characters. They also do not take risks, know there audience.

Take Dana for example. Remember when Dana was a lacky of Charlotte and Dana would get slapped around by her each week? That was a pretty hot angle. Then they scrapped it out of the blue.

People popped for Neville's first few matches on the roster, but stopped after it went nowhere, STILL - they popped for the Red Arrow like crazy.
Or take Rollins vs Neville for the title - people got invested into the match without being told a story, because they cared about the wrestlers and about the title changing its owner.
I mean, sure, you can say that it was due to months of Rollins's chickenshit heel reign that bored 99% of every arena he's been in, and due to Neville being the ultimate underdog in that match, leading to disbelief when he was able to somehow be a challenge to the champion. But people popped for the spots nonetheless, and that's what matters.
