He spent years in WCW, stayed as a midcarder/tag team wrestler for awhile but then was making a push in the upper midcard and looked ready to break out. Then, Hogan comes in and forces him to become a jobber and later he gets fired. At that point, he made it his goal to surpass Hogan
So he did, even with his career getting shortened by Owen and getting a horrible gimmick beforehand. He became the biggest star in wrestling history, surpassed all of Hogan's records, and nearly single-handedly saved WWF while causing WCW to fold in the process. He did it.
Then, his heel turn is a bust, his character starts losing it's edge, his injuries start catching up to him, but he's still the top dog. All of a sudden, here comes Hulk Hogan. He immediately becomes the most over wrestler in the company, got 5-10 minute standing ovations all the time and meanwhile Austin was stuck in the midcard with a feud with Eddie Guerrero (before he became a big name) incoming and then he was asked to job to Brock on weekly TV like he was some no name. Can you imagine how pissed he must have been? It's no wonder that he beat his wife that year

The only reason austin turned heel is because he wanted to start a second wrestling boom just like hogan did. Instead it was a huge disaster and killed his character. If his heel turn succeeded he would have surpassed hogan but as it stands hogan is still the only person to make business explode as the top face then as the top heel

He actually did the best he could (along with batista in the beginning) by stopping the ratings freefall raw had once hhh took over as the top star. Average ppv buyrates never reached attitude era heights again but the big ones usually did good numbers. He was in the main event of the top two most bought manias in history and i'm pretty sure 29 is also in the top five.
