I think the Japanese economy dying is what ultimately caused the decline of pro-wrestling. People couldn't afford to go to these shows on a regular basis anymore and I guess networks couldn't afford to pay these promotions anymore to air their TV shows. There's also cases of mismanagement: AJW owners lost all their money in real estate and Inoki brought New Japan so low with his retarded Inokism he had to sell the company. And All Japan's exodus also caused that promotion to severely decline.

The lost decade is the 90's. Lets not forget we had clean finishes when most wrestling was dq or countout finishes. The rise of shoot. All that created a buzz. And Nwo Japan.

Njpw was moved to late night still getting 10.0 while ajpw was getting 4.0. Nowadays Njpw comes on 2 am to 3am start times.

They also never really ran toyko dome because it wasn't oppened until prime time wrestling was over.

Njpw still had the strength allure which kept most old fans watching.

Joshi workers still looked like their past selves but now out working the old eras.

Nowadays most feds excecpt Njpw are on satellite tv. Which is only in 15 percent of Japans households. Knowing satellite tv never really made it big as it over in the west.

However, you can't rule out that there's the possibility that SOMETHING could happen that gets joshi some buzz again. It's hard to predict, especially with new media watching patterns and all that jazz, but there could be a new joshi fad at some point in the future, however that'd look like.

Inokiism didn't do shit in the bigger picture, the company was already starting to decline in the 90's, just like the rest of the scene. The issue wasn't the in-ring philosophy, but the refusal to scale down operations, since running that big time mainstream fed schedule with all those big arena shows wasn't possible anymore in the 00's (not unless you wanted to lose your ass, which NJPW did). You now had what felt like dozens of split-off groups competing with you, PRIDE and K-1 hogging all the mainstream attention, no more good TV and the post-bubble economy still being the shits.

NOAH had it somewhat figured out by running a more moderate schedule and only doing the Dome twice at their peak, but ultimately the product simply rested on the shoulders of two AJPW nostalgia draws.

Pride was the biggest thing for tv ratings at the time. While Hustle outdid all wrestling promotions tv ratings before it died and became crap.

4.0 tv rating outdoing Noah. Njpw tv ratings sank once they got brought out and dropped the strength appeal.

Bad booking in general is why the Inoki era failed and produced too much debt. Inoki would ask bookers to have his fighters to win over his wrestlers. And send wrestlers over to mma to expose the business.

Far different in the 90's where legit guys get booked to lose to wrestlers.

You could make an argument that they were bigger in Tokyo in 2004 and especially 2005, based on attendance numbers. It's hard to know if they were really perceived as such though, if you consider that "NJPW #1" has been pretty ingrained in the minds of japanese wrestling fans, much like "NOAH and AJPW are major feds" is still ingrained in their minds today, even though that isn't the case from a business standpoint anymore.

And outside of Tokyo NJPW still was bigger. Osaka and the Kansai area as a whole has always been a NJPW hotbed and remained it even during that time (in relation to the rest of the scenes performance there). NOAH never really made much headway outside of it, one reason being that they didn't take over the old outside of Tokyo AJPW promoters.

A finaical backer is ideal to get tv time on late nights or network. You have to pay them to be on it whereas Njpw gets paid to be on it.

Ntv dropped Noah when Noah couldn't afford it anymore and still can't. So they got sent to gtv which only shows 10 shows a year.

Even if there's a fad it short term. Joshi always had a bulit in fanbase even in low periods. That's not the case anymore. Stardoms the only promotion in Japan that can really draw. Yet it's on the level of Bjpw not Njpw or even DragonGate.

Once the top orgs died it shrank more. Most fans won't watch another promotion and simply quit for good.

Strong Style, as it was originally thought of in NJPW, was the idea that Pro-Wrestlers were the strongest and thus had to prove that in (worked) fights against martial artists.

Hence Inoki vs. Ali and all the other Inoki different style fights and then Hashimoto continuing that tradition. It was what set NJPW apart from every other promotion and gave it an aura of legitimacy.

Now PRIDE and K-1 came along and claimed they were the feds with the best fighters in Japan. Now, from the outside and not knowing NJPWs history, this would make you think:"so what, they're fighting sports, this is Pro-Wrestling."

But this was Japan in the early 00's and NJPW guys have been viewed as actually legit and the strongest guys around by their fanbase (that doesn't mean the fans thought everything was real, but there was still the notion that a NJPW wrestler could kick-ass if it came to that point). If NJPW would've ignored the new MMA boom, fans would have jumped shipped anyway, much like fans left UWFi in droves when Takada initially refused to fight Rickson, it would've been viewed as cowardice.

Of course, Nagata vs. CroCop was a really, really dumb idea even under these circumstances and it only happened as an emergency booking to begin with.
