I'd boil it down to his booking in Lucha Underground. They've really gone out of their way to portray him as this over-the-top, hyper violent badass. He's breaking arms left and right. He tried to set Vampiro on fire once. He has ciero miedo. They just really put him over as a ruthless son of a bitch.

Its not just the LU booking because he's super over wherever he goes, and not -that- many people watch LU. It's probably not just the mask either, but it is really cool.

He's a very good brawler which is a natural foil to a lot of lucha guys. It's easy to say he doesn't seem too impressive because he's usually up against fairly high quality Flippy Shit, but his more grounded impact style meshes really well. He's like Indiana Jones in that scene where he just shoots the fancy sword guy and that will always have appeal. He knows how to carry himself like a monster too, despite being like 5'8 tops.
