So, I've been watching Ping Pong and it really inspired me to take up table tennis. How many of you play table tennis and what are some tips for people picking it up?
How long have you played it and how long did it take for you to get good?
I've played casually since I was a young child, with my father (who played in china) generally teaching me the basics and drilling with me. By no means am I good at table tennis, I don't play in tournaments, but I can offer some of the obvious pointers. Take them with a grain of salt.
Like most sports, if you want to get good, find a club, attend training sessions, find a personal coach if possible, and drill repetitions endlessly. Form is essential for table tennis, and it takes a while for you to start feeling the ball underneath the bat. You're probably gonna use the shakehand grip. There are a multitude of styles and techniques for this sport in particular: drives, chops, lobs, loops, counter drives, etc. Don't get too caught up in style, first become proficient in the most fundamental techniques, focusing on movement and placing the ball where you want, with the stroke you want. Power, speed and accuracy will come with time and repetition. Your own preferences will let you find your own playing style. As with most sports, but especially for table tennis, you absolutely must drill the movements until they become second nature, it's not absurd to perform a stroke upwards of 100 times in one training rally.
