Kotoyuki is the second rikishi from the Sadogatake Beya to earn promotion into the Sekiwake and Sanyaku ranks since the present oyakata inherited the heya on November 25, 2005. The previous was Kotoshogiku who was promoted in the 2007 March Grand Sumo Tournament.

Kotoyuki is the third rikishi from the Kagawa Prefecture to make his Sekiwake debut post WWII, following Wakamisugi who was promoted in the 1960 July Grand Sumo Tournament. This is the fourth Sanyaku debut post WWII, with the previous also being Wakamisugi in the 1960 July Tournament.

Sekiwake Debut: Ikioi
Ikioi is the first rikishi from the Isenoumi Beya to earn promotion into the Sekiwake rank since the present oyakata inherited the heya on September 25, 2011. The previous was Tosanoumi who was promoted in the 1997 May Grand Sumo Tournament.
Ikioi is the third rikishi from the Osaka Prefecture to earn this promotion post WWII, with the previous being Goeido who was promoted in the 2009 May Grand Sumo Tournament.

Kotoyuki and Ikioi are the 154th and 155th rikishi to make their Sekiwake debuts post WWII, with the previous being Yoshikaze who was promoted in the 2016 January Grand Sumo Tournament.

This is the 14th tournament post WWII in which there have been two Sekiwakes and both were newly promoted. The previous time this occurred was in the 2015 March Grand Sumo Tournament with Terunofuji and Okinoumi.

Komusubi Debut: Kaisei

Kaisei is the second rikishi from the Tomozuna Beya to earn promotion into the Komusubi rank since the present oyakata inherited the heya on May 20, 1989. The previous was Kaio who was promoted in the 1994 May Grand Sumo Tournament.

Kaisei is the first rikishi from Brazil to make his Komusubi debut. He is the 25th foreign-born rikishi to accomplish this, following Terunofuji and Tamawashi who were promoted in the 2015 March Grand Sumo Tournament.
