There was a great clip on Bryan and Vinny a while back where they played Bryan and Dave chatting. Someone had asked what'd happen to the company after Vince retired and Bryan said "You know, he could live to a hundred." and Dave just calmly said "Yeah but he won't." completely glibly. I can't remember the last time I heard him genuinely laugh at a joke.

It's a gimmick.
Dave heartily laughs at jokes when Tom Lawlor or Chael Sonnen make them because he is a big mark for the MMA fighters.
But he always, always always no sells Bryan's shitty terrible WACKY~!~!~ humor. But Bryan never stops trying, bless him, he just wants Big Daddy' Dave's approval so much :(
If you actually read The Observer you'd know Dave has a very lowkey, understated but highly acerbic wit. He is very deadpan and sarcastic and hilarious. But I do agree he is definitely a bit on the spectrum, look at any video interview with him on YT. But you don't become an authority on such a weird niche industry like this without being a bit touched in the head.
Anyway, here's Dave burying the shit out of an episode of Nitro in 1999;

This ideology, this mindset among the new era superstars is the biggest culprit and the biggest reason for lack of characters and lack of storylines in wrestling today. These new age wrestlers instead of working on being fun characters, captivating personalities, entertaining badasses on the show and allowing the viewers to naturally like them, are begging for their "respect" every week citing their work ethic as a reason. This mindset is totally retarded, why should any fan be forced to "respect" someone on a goddamn tv show. So what if these guys work 300 days a year? That doesn't make one entertaining as a character. How did this cancerous mentality spread? Where did this start? And how does wrestling get out this?

I hope he enjoys pretending to be an MMA fighter for a little longer, because time's almost up for Phil. He will reap what he has sowed and Mickey Gall will humble him once and for all. Phil is a typical spoiled kid who didn't have a stern father figure growing up. He is always used to getting his way, and in WWE, this worked for him because it was fake and he could just be "booked" to win whenever he cried enough. Phil is in for a rude awakening when he realizes there are no creative writers in UFC. Mickey Gall is going to give Phil every beating his father failed to, and I guarantee you will never hear Phil acting snarky on a podcast after this, you will never hear Phil mouthing off to fans in airports after this.
