Guide to snek measurement the accurate (pretty close) way:

Reptile classifieds for finding breeders of various scaled and sundry creatures

>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>reptilescanada.com (Canadian breeders)
>Also check to see if there are any annual reptile shows/expos in your area as these are good places to find good animals from good breeders at partial discount

Discord link goes to #herp
>https://discord.gg/4Ucqrq8

/herp/ officially official all purpose care sheet of wonder and magic

>sand a shit
>use a thermostat
>read all the caresheets
>set up your tank before you get your herp
>regulate temps & humidity levels prior to herp arrival
>do not fuck with (handle) your herp for at least 7 days after bringing it home and ideally wait until herp has eaten at least one meal (for snakes), two meals for lizards, frogs, etc.
>PVC tanks are way better for most applications and worth the extra money
>it is best to avoid chain pet stores when looking to purchase live animals as mass breeder suppliers are not especially careful about health and sound genetics... it often saves you money long term to spend a little extra up front to get a healthy animal

>Jump Start (formerly Hydrofarm) thermostat is a good basic and inexpensive thermostat for regulating ceramic heat emitters and under tank heaters (Amazon sells it)
>if you want something more advanced for temperature control, look at Herpstat products

Do NOT join the discord! The moment you have an opinion that the mods don't agree with you get banned. I'm a current memeber and it's really bad that I'm about to quit. The only active part is the general and it gets like 50 messages a day at most.
>>
>>2417771
You got banned because you were shitposting non-stop and accused various people of abusing animals without any evidence. I know this because we've only banned one redditor that had this exact same outlook on the discord when shit didn't go your way.
>>
>>2417771

Okay apparently one or two different reptile discord communities have decided to squat here. If you want to use this thread, keep discussion on topic please. This is not the venue for your bickering. If you want to advertise your discord, make one post with the link and then piss off. That includes future threads. I will not have legitimate new threads be hijacked by you people all in the name of including the discord link in the OP. Post link as first reply if you want, i don't care. The shit that went down last night is not acceptable.

Please.

I'm going to respond to this one last time.

I am not going to include the discord link in the OP for two reasons:

1. This is thread for discussion here. It is not an advertisement for non-4chan social sites.
2. It appears to me that there are two discord communities, each attempting to get on their own discord link in the OP to the exclusion of the other. I will not participate in that and I will not have this general play middle man to it either. You may post the link to your's, and they may post the link to their's, but neither is going in the OP in future.
>>
>>2418088
>>2418194
It's not even a problem between two reptile communities. It just so happens that /an/'s largest server comprises of a lot of /herp/ users with ties to this specific general as well as /aq/. The guy claiming to have another, larger server is nothing but a redditor that was banned from the server for harassing half it's population, and is choosing right now to cause drama on the general. His "server" doesn't even exist. Up until last night, the /herp/ faction within /an/cord only dropped invites leading to the #herp channel ever so often, and then proceeded to fuck off and never bring up Discord in the threads.

The only thing people are doing is giving the single reddit shitposter the attention he needs to shit up this thread to the depths of hell.
>>
>>2418165

If vet visit is in the next couple weeks you can wait. A substrate change and tank clean would be a good idea but otherwise wait until you have some kind of diagnosis before administering medical care.
>>
>>2418195

I don't care. Argue elsewhere. Not here.
>>
>>2418194
1. You have no power over being the sole OP of this general.
2. As far as I'm aware there is only one discord, I have not seen any invites to a second, competing one. This whole drama is being stirred up one person pretending to have a discord themselves. We believe this person is a certain someone that got banned (the ONLY person out of 300+ member to ever get banned) over massively harassing people, that is now purposely shitposting here, including samefagging and obviously false allegations, such as being banned for having differing opinions (you can join yourself and just lurk to check if that is true or not).

Not including the discord link won't stop him. I will tell you exactly what will happen nex thread. He's going to pretend to be one of the "discord fags" and complain loudly and insultingly over not including the link. If we post invites here we don't do it insultingly or in a braggart way.
>>
>>2418199
There are no arguments here.

It's all one guy trying to make discord look bad because he got banned for exactly the behavior he is now repeating here.
>>
>>2418200
>If we post invites here we don't do it insultingly or in a braggart way.

I would appreciate that. Thank you.
>>
>>2418194
We honestly don't care if it's in the OP or not, there are a lot of people in the herp channel on discord, someone will always be around when the new thread is made and post an invite as one of the first posts. It's not a problem.

>>2418202
We would never do that anyway. Why the fuck would we? No one is going to join the discord if we were to post like that. We WANT people joining and having discussions, that way no one would join.

If there are posts like that you know who it is.
>>
>>2418188

okay so back in the day I had a large kiddie pool that we would set up in the backyard during summer and after awhile of not using it plants began to bust through the bottom of the pool and mosquito larvae started to appear then soon after that tadpoles and frogs appeared as well. Now what I'm wondering is would I be able to simulate this again, but through better and safer means? (Note: once the plants came through we stopped going in the pool. We may live in the shitty part of the state, but we aren't that awful.)

>>2418671

Garden centres often sell pond liners for this purpose. Do a search for 'high density polyehtylene pond liner' or 'hdpe pond liner'. They come in many different sizes. Pic related is sold by Lowes and has 145 gallon capacity. You pretty much just dig a hole in the same shape and put it in. I recommend putting substrate in and seeding it with aquatic or semi-aquatic plants that can survive your climate. Nature will work out the rest.

>>
>>2419809

Recommend a vet trip or at least a fecal exam to see what you're dealing with health-wise. As for the obesity, that's a simple matter of returning the snake to appropriate feeder size and frequency + appropriately sized tank and stuff to climb on.

Today I fed my 11 month old male leopard gecko and when he was stalking the cricket he did that rapid tail wagging thing for the first time ever (it was adorable). I've read that it's a mating display, so does that mean he is sexually mature now? Or was he just really excited about food today?

They do it when eating on occasion just because they're excited and all hyped up about the meal. Whether happy about hunting or imminent sex, as the case may be, it is primarily leo body language for excitement.

OK Herp I need some help. I have been considering picking up my first reptile since I had a box turtle as a teen which had to be given to another family due to moving. Anyway I am looking at Bearded dragons, preferably adults since I am away on weekends on a regular basis so a lizard that has a largely plant diet will be easier on my folks to feed for a day.

But Budget is a concern and I want to know how much do you guys personally spend on a Beardie? Any tricks you guys use to keep costs down at all? Because right now they seem like they could cost a good bit per week.

>High powered heat bulb
>Fresh vegetables and greens every day

The cheapest to keep reptile I can think of is a corn snake.
>Eats once a week
>No special lighting
>Heat mats are more efficient than bulbs
>>
>>2420736
Yeah any colubrid is cheap to feed and easy care. Or any small to medium sized arid climate snake for that matter.

There is also crested and gargoyle geckos. Primary diet is pre-mixed powder every second day + live insects maybe once a week. If room temp is mid 70's, no heat required. Tank needs to be misted with water once daily.

Those two groups are as easy as it gets.

Reptiles are entirely lacking the part of the brain that deals with love and affection.
They act that way because they've associated it with being fed.
>>
>>2420736
>>2420748
I am not a major fan of snakes as pets even if I do find some absolutely adorable. Same with geckos. A huge reason for this is that my brother has various species of geckos and despite how neat they are, I find myself wanting something more active and interactive.

So I am curious about what others pay when it comes to a beardie. Also I was hoping that a bonus side of the keeping regular produce in the house is that it will help me cook and eat more healthy if I have more of an excuse to keep stocked on greens. I will admit that I did not consider how much more the electric bill might cost.

the cheapest way to feed a beardie is to grow your own veggies and breed your own feeders

veggies are cheap though, I can get a months worth for like 5 bucks
I'll get around to breeding dubias eventually so at this point I probably spend about 7 or 8 dollars every other week to keep him fed on bugs

>>2420895
One heat lamp and UVB bulb will not make a major spike in your electricity bill. It's much more of concern if you have a whole room full of tanks all needed various heating and lighting fixtures.

Majority of cost for a bearded dragon is upfront for the tank, decor, and lighting. You can expect to pay maybe $150 or so for that. And then whatever the dragon itself runs. Ongoing feeding and electricity costs are modest.

Missing nails are from his first owner, some kid who didn't know anything about them until I told him. Basically he would yank him off of things and I'm assuming that's how his tails came off...I received him with 4 nails total missing. As far as the length, he's is both active and he still digs. I completely agree. I act very much the same way.

It's nice that you care so mich, but understand bad owners are a minority, mediocre owners are a majority, and good owners are a minority. This is the case for ALL pets, not just reptiles. Mediocre owners may suck in a few regards, but do enough good things to keep their reptiles alive for their expected lifetime.
By being predisposed to sperging out at people, you are taking an extreme stance that not far from PETA. Have faith in fellow reptile owners. Sperg if they're actually idiots, but be nicer to mediocre owners or you'll just end up driving them away and your good advice (which I assume you want people to follow) will be ignored because of your attitude.

So the bottom side of a heat mat gets equally as hot as the sticky side right?

I have a wooden tank, and ill be putting some lexan glass at the bottom, between the tiles and wood.

I was wondering if I stuck the heat mat, to the lexan on It's top, touching the bottom of the tiles; if it would reach regular temps (94 degrees Fahrenheit)
>>
>>2421954
Uth's are the same temp both sides. However, your proposed setup must have ventilation to the heat mat from the bottom so as to not overheat/ignite/burn down tank/burn down house. Sandwiching it between lexan and tiles in the way I think you are suggesting is very dangerous.

Aquatic turtles like painteds have no problem with depth, but the footprint of the tank is too small for them, which is why wider is better. (Even hatchlings can be in very deep water as long as it a surface it can climb if it doesn't want to swim up) Floating platforms are alright but unless it's a decent sized one, most turtles will outgrow it and it won't be able to float with it's weight.

Also fish and turtles are iffy, as it's incredibly likely the turtle will eventually eat them since it's part of their diet.
However if this is not much of a concern go with small, fast schooling fish or livebearers like guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails. They can evade fairly well and the livebearers have a chance of breeding. The key is getting fish that don't cost much so you can replace them in the event they get eaten. A cheaper in the long run option is have a separate breeding aquarium of guppies or even shrimp and just toss some in when their population begins to spike, that way you don't have to pay to replace them.
>>
>>2422478

You want one big frog or toad, or you want several little tiny ones, or something in between? Something that climbs or something that hangs around on the ground, or something that mostly swims?

Thanks mane, this was my thinking as far as the fish go, just to keep them as potential feeders and atmosphere
But with eastern painted's never growing much larger then 4 inches I didnt know how much room was adequate or preferred. Most people online only seem to worry about the swimming needs of larger species
>>
>>2422540
That's only if it's a male and even then, you can get the abnormal male that gets up to 6". Females are always larger than males and can even get up to 8". It's better to plan for potential sizes in the long run as a precaution. A 40 tall is okay but a 40 long or breeder is better, they don't mind depth but they like to move around alot. Just make sure it's a male, a female will need more than a 40 gallon.
>>
>>2422526

The two easiest to care for options in the large category are pyxicephalus frog (aka pixie frog aka african bullfrog) and pacman frog (south american horned frog).

Toads are a bit less common in pet trade, in my experience. Cane toad is probably easiest to obtain.

Care for all three is easy. All are fat bastards even when they are normal healthy weight for their age and species.

>>

>>
>>2421816
Be sure to vary their diet. My first pixie (and only pixie) who is about 15m/o was fed nothing but super worms for several months (noob fuck up) while developing and I'm pretty sure he got fuck all Vitamin A, which led to short tongue syndrome (can't produce sticky mucus on tongue). He hasn't eaten properly in many months. Also keep an eye out for mold, though that usually isn't an issue. Spray bottle is a good investment and of course use distilled water or get the stuff that takes chlorine out of water that's like 5 bucks. When it comes to tank setup I've found that a simple one is better than an elaborate one. Dust your food just to be safe from MBD. Try to keep the constant temperature a little on the warmer end of their temp. tolerance (aka around 79-80ish) so they don't become lethargic. I can't stress enough to you though VARY THEIR DIET, it has a huge impact on pixies. Can't think of anything else atm. Good luck fellow frogman.
>>
>>2422557
Sounds like a good idea
The store has one male that I intended to get if the tank was suitable
I believe they're currently 4 inch yearlings so its totally possible they can grow into more
Its always within possibility to just upgrade the tabk later on

While I dont consider myself a pro I can give decent answers to you
Angonoka's are practically non existent for sale so my best bet would be something like the TSA catching a blackmarket export/import
Burmese star tortoises can be bought online from a couple of places
Anacondas can also be bought online but may require a permit or not allowed at all depending on where you live but mostly as juveniles/neonates a large male would probably be from someone trying to get rid of their collection instead of any sort of vendor

Hey /herp/ I've been feeding my geckos superworms and hornworms because I heard they are better nutritionally than some other feeders, but it seems like no two nutritional chart I see is the same for feeders. Does anybody have a particular chart or study they find accurate or current?
>>
>>2424584

>hang

No. You do not want your tank swaying around spilling water and freaking out your gecko.

Making that thing gecko safe is going to take some work. Whatever that would is sealed with is most likely toxic. It will have to be stripped and sanded, then re-sealed with something safe like water based polyurethane. Seal all internal wood joints with 100% silicone. You will need to add adequate ventilation somehow. And a waterproof lower section to hold your substrate (you don't want substrate falling out every time you open the door).

Honestly it would be less work to build something similar from scratch than it would be to make this thing suitable as a terrarium.
>>
>>2424632

Accuracy is iffy on all of those charts. Hornworms are generally considered very good. Superworms are better than mealworms but not as good as crickets which in turn are not as good as dubia roaches. Dubia roaches, phoenix worms, hornworms, and silkworms are all very good.

Girlfriend called me over saying when she got home her roommate told her the cat got in the tank of the bearded dragon somehow, I went home and checked it out,I'm not seeing any scratches or blood on the beardie, naturally his stress marks are prominent and he's staying very still and breathing shallow, he has one eye closed but I don't see any scratches or blood around it either, I turned off his lights for the night and had everyone leave the room and llocked it,what steps should I take next? Thanks in advance for the help
>>
This is prob more of a newbie question, but how long does it take for ya'll snake to shed? Specifically ball python cause I've had mine for close to a month now and when I got him he just started showing signs of shedding and this week he finally had his eyes cloud over. His temps and humidity are all fine and I fed him beginning of last week. Is there anything else I should be doing to help with the shedding process?
>>
>>2424760
Id atleast give him a saline bath or some antibiotic cream incase theres a shallow wound you might not notice
Cat scratches/bites are extremely prone to infection
>>
>>2424784
depends on age/size/feeding
Small snake fed large items often will shed more than bigger snake fed more conservatively
As long as he is shedding its no problem
>>
>>2424786
Alrighty! Thanks for the reassurance!

My snakes usually shed every 1-3 months. That's regardless of age, species, feeding schedule, and growth rate. My conservatively fed snakes shed just as often as my more heavily-fed snakes do. The only exception is my sunglow, I'm not sure what's up with her shed cycles. She once went 9 months without shedding (unless I forgot to record a shed or two), despite putting on like 8" in length and 200-250 grams in that period of time. Pic is her.

Will do, thank you

What's up with my african dwarf frog? Just bought him today and he appears to have some eye issues. I can't even see his pupils. He doesn't appear to react to things approaching him unless they touch him.

This has got to be one of the most beautiful snakes I've ever seen

I knew about spitting cobras, just not the red species Naja pallida. Absolutely crazy coloration it can have.

Take back to store. That doesn't look right to me. In fact i'm not even sure if your froge has eyes. It kind of looks like it was born without or it lost them somehow.
>>
>>2425108
Eye is missing, something likely bit it out at the store.

Should heal up just fine though.

I like pacman frogs. They don't move around much and aren't 'entertaining' in the conventional way but I still find them fascinating. Something about a big fat frog buried in substrate to just below its eyes staring at me from across the room... it's easy to assume they actually control the universe and dictate the rise and fall of nations.

Any recommendations on taking care of glass lizards? Found a few in my backyard yesterday, unfortunately I injured one by mistake.
>>
>>2425662
Return to yard and purchase a captive bred lizard if you want a pet.

Lastly is my pair of Gilas. They are captive bred and legally obtained. The pink one is my female and the Orange is my male. I love these guys and it has always been a dream of mine to have one. Not sure if I'm gonna breed, certainty not this year but thinking about it next year. My girl still needs to put on some weight. Besides that, these guys are pretty good as far as handling. No hissing or even flightyness. I do not wear gloves ( I know, not smart) but they havent shown any aggression or fearfulness. I understand that they are unpredictable buuuutt, I'm not too worried.

I'm moving into a van with my bearded dragon and girlfriend. What's the best way to heat her cage with low wattage?
I was thinking build a melamine cage with an undertank heater. I read that the melamine won't conduct very well so I'm not sure what to make the floor of the cage out of. PVC?
We plan on chasing decent weather so she'll get plenty of natural UV outside of her box and the van should stay sort of warm otherwise. I was thinking about doing a screen top so she could get UV when I had the windows open but I'm worried that all the heat would vent out and her cage would be much harder to keep at a good temp.

Would a UTH be good with her melamine cage? And with what floor? I was also thinking about making a Plexiglas cage instead of melamine
I'm asking about the lizard, not the girlfriend

do their nails need to be trimmed ever? they look uncomfortably long for them
>>
>>2426073
what are you even going to power this with?
anything short of driving around in an RV sounds like a bad idea without a generator running
besides a beardie isnt really going to get anything out of belly heat, they bask so at the very minimum you'll need some kind of incandescent bulb with a ton of natural sunning

to be completely honest with you, you should probably try to find someone to rehome him to
>>
>>2426099
They do. I actually just filed them about a month ago. They need it again desu. I'll probably do it sometimes this week but I have seen that their nails get pretty long even in the wild. As far as I have observed it's not really uncomfortable. They dig and burrow in their rack
>>
>>2426100
Solar panels and big batteries with a big inverter
Her cage is going to be the highest wattage thing we have; avoiding fridges and that shit. If I have to put a mercury bulb in there, I can. I'd just prefer to avoid that.
Would a ceramic emitter with LED strip (I know the strips do nothing for her except light the place up) make her happy while basking?
>>
>>2426112
a che would be fine as well i'd say
>>
>>2425662
Are you sure you injured it and it didn't just drop its tail? I'd release it back into the wild.

For serious? Probably a Blue Tongue Skink or one of the more relaxed Monitor Lizards, but monitors get rather large and more than likely are way out of your league. Go for the Skink.

I need help....my 1.5 years old rat snake has refused to eat for the past 3 weeks. He has always been an easy eater prior to that. Nothing temperature wise has changed. He still moves a lot in his enclosure and doesn't appear to have any sign of illness or to be particularly stressed out.

I've tried rats and mice but nothing does it. He slips right by them as if they were rocks. I have even tried to provoke him with the rats but he never even bothered striking at them.

What do? I'm pretty worried and I hate the vet.

Why?

Anyway, 3 weeks hunger strike is a little unusual for a colubrid but not immediate cause for concern if snek is behaving normally otherwise.

I want to get a frilled dragon, can someone find me a pre-built terrarium online that will suffice? So far i found this but i'm not sure if it's big enough, thanks all!

You're better off searching craigslist for custom built iguana enclosures. Everything else will be too small for a frilled.
>>

>>
>>2427801
i understand, i guess it's kind of a temporary type of thing since the custom made ones (here) are like 400 bucks. I'd be getting a baby so i'd assume that would suffice for a while

>>
>>2427805
You'd still have to upgrade soon enough. For an adult you're looking for something like a 5 x 3,3 x 6,5 feet enclosure
>>
>>2427810
thanks for the answers, guess i'll just keep looking around on craigslist for a good deal

Looking into RHP's for my carpet pythons enclosure.
Anyone have recommendations? The 2 that I see recommended all the time are pro products and reptile basics.
Enclosure is 3x2x2 and will most likely have my ball move into it when the carpet most likely outgrows it. Have heard heavy praise for both with some minor negativity for reptile basics but have no clue if its valid or retarded brand loyalty
>>
>>2427908
The Reptile Basics heat panels are fine. Most of the bickering about those two brands is about build materials and design. In my experience Reptile Basics panels are safe and reliable.
>>
>>2427601
My snake is very relax and will come right in my hand if i present it to him. But he is the devil if you don't respect him. If he gets rough handled at the vet with his head held down against his will, he'll be pissed for weeks to come. I don't want to traumatize the poor thing.

I'm now pretty sure hes got a RI. I'm treating him at home with good results so far. If he keeps making noise and not eating by tomorrow, I'll take him to the damn vet.

How's red lettuce for beardies?
my guy has decided he finds it more interesting than the normal stuff
can they see color, is that how he can tell?
>>

I don't see why it would cause any issues. That's cute your beardie likes it better than the green.
