>why did he do this
crabs like to move around and look for food and fuck
also let's be realistic- you're probably keeping an ocean animal in a freshwater tank. He can survive that but he's going to try to run whenever he gets the chance.
>and how do I prevent this?
1. don't have anything he can climb sticking out of the water.
2. if you have things he can climb sticking out of the water, make sure the tank has a cover with no crab-size holes in it.

That's a fiddler crab right? Just look up a basic caresheet. You have the internet, obviously, fucking use it.
Put a breathable cover on the aquarium? Wtf is this thread

He left his aquatic home because he's suffering from crippling depression. He's lonely, lacking direction in life, and ready to end it all.
So he crawled out of the tank in a bid to die of suffocation, but at least being free from the chains that bind. You simply scooped him up and took away his attempt at controlling the only thing he can.
You.
Fucking.
Monster.

i heard that you can wrap a couple of inches of saran wrap around the top of the aquarium

I had fiddler crabs as a kid, they escaped one night while I was sleeping. Found one a month later dead in my closet and the other the next year behind the refrigerator. The solution was obviously not to buy any more fiddler crabs.
