I didn't have a camera on me since I go hiking around here all the time (so I don't expect anyone to believe me), but it looked exactly like pic related.

I go hiking all the time so when I saw the bird I was curious since I'd never seen anything like it, and there's really only a handful of birds you see.

Came home and went through a list of all NZ birds and I'm 99.99% sure it was this, pic related (called the piopio)
