My betta Carl lives in a 2 gallon tank, eats 4-5 pellets daily, no heater/filter, gets a bi-weekly water change (some old water stays), and he's 2 years old.
I've never changed this routine, but recently he's been acting oddly. Laying at the bottom, or sitting on a plant with his head out of water. I know the ammonia isn't too high because I changed the water. He's still making bubble nests. His color is still vibrant. Any ideas? Is Carl just getting old?

Yeah he's getting old and tired of your shit. Your neglect finally got the best of him. Sorry mate.

He needs a heater and a filter.
Bettas can make it 4 or 5 years, so 2 year isn't old and it's not just age.

Kekk.

Try putting him in an environment he'd actually thrive in and enjoy, instead of the bare minimum to slowly kill him.

No thank you. Fish tanks are absolutely ugly and all the noise they make and energy consumption makes me feel sick to my stomach. I'll stick with the vase. Two years is a good run.

You realize fish tanks come in all shapes and sizes and that you can get very quiet filters these days? Not to mention, we're talking pennies a day as far energy consumption goes.
Heating and filters really are not optional, so I hope you at least do not get another fish.

OP never said it as his photo, though I still think the post was bait

Thing is, even if it's bait, it's identical to the attitudes of many of the people I know. Lots of people really do treat bettas like actual shit mostly through ignorance and the care that is described in OP really is not that bad relatively.
