My half AmStaff is very gentle with people she knows (takes half a day to get to know someone for her). Never barks, never aggressive, knows when her teeth hits skin when playing (immediately stops, head down, ear down, etc. Normal dog submissive behavior). But the second someone knocks the door or she hears a sound in the backyard, she comes alert and barks. That's a good guard dog for me.

For a while there was a couple posting about their "reptile rescue" asking for donations, unwanted reptiles and supplies. At the bottom of their ad it always said "we do not adopt out animals, all will find their forever home at our rescue." I can understand some animals need special care and wanting to keep them to ensure they get the attention they need but these people just seemed like animal hoarders asking for money. So sketchy.

I worked at an animal rescue for a while, the couple who owned and ran the place did the same 'forever home' thing. Another girl was doing the same thing a county over but she shot herself.
Animal rescues like that can and do sometimes turn into hoarding situations. We got some animals from a rescue that had to be shut down because it was so fucked. A lot of the animals there had to be put down because of disease, and the ones we got required a fair amount of vet care. Lady running it just kept taking them in but couldn't afford or take the time to care for them. The place was kind of horrific from what I hear.

Those people looking for kittens saying they're ready to pay for vet costs don't sound too bad.

My local Craigslist has been having a pissong fest over rat breeders/ratteries. Each one claims the other sucks, sick rats, highly aggressive rats, one is a murderer for culling sick/highly aggressive rats, They eat children, etc. I think there's 3-4 total involved, stemming from a feud between two of them and they've all crossed lineages. Then there's another person posting how they all suck, not-naming anyone but claiming only one tests for diseases like 'Sendai virus and Sialodacryoadenitis virus (aka rat corona virus; SDA.)' and Seoul virus. To be fair they should probably be tested, having had to deal with rat bite fever infected rats before. It's probably going to be even more years before I ever get rats again. Not surprisingly they're all younger 20s women.

Unrelated to rats but pic related. It's not the worst ever. I get that she tried, and perhaps adopted this dog as an adult rather than a puppy but a 'goldendoodle' sounds like a horrible mix to be around small animals or a farm dog even if either line didn't come from hunting stock.

There's also always a constant flow of sugar gliders for rehoming. They're always in a mixed sex harem or male/female pair for hundreds of dollars(but mostly due to selling cage and toys). I've seen over 30 different postings in my area from just checking Craigslist about twice a month when I'm bored. It's how I got my three a few years ago. It's always they just don't want them anymore. I have yet to see anyone have a different excuse like they're moving, allergic, etc.

Most families rehoming a dog don't have an understanding of Schutzhund training, let alone practice it correctly. In my experience, when a family like this says they have a "friendly guard dog" it's a dog with terrible social skills beyond immediate family. At least she was honest, and seems to be have been responsible enough to know when to admit her limitations. She's a good dog. She's been mauled by my Chow mix about a dozen times now, thanks to her loose skin she never takes any physical damage. She's also helped chase a young bear out of our trash with the Chow mix. She is currently 9 months old. She keeps getting more tan in her as she ages though, and she pisses like a race horse.

German Shepards are great dogs if you buy from licensed breeders who breed working line Shepards. They won't have the sloping back, and they'll be bred with health in mind. The show lines used to be just as great until the sloping back was introduced by people influential in the show business. Now the sloping back wins in the shows due to politics, even though it is not in the breed standards.

Which reminds me, we found one of our dogs as a puppy around the holiday cottages next to our village, chucked into a ditch in a bag.
Poor pup nearly suffocated there and was obviously mistreated. Grew up to be the most playful dog we've ever had but he hated children outside our family until his final days and would just curl up and cry if you even tried to put a leash on him.
