Bump
Also looking for advice on starting out
i /bonsai/, but i cannot offer any help as i am rather new myself. my best advice would be to be patient and not to be rash in making changes or decisions. with most plants, that tends to make things worse. maybe it will be okay, only time will tell. plants, especially bonsai, are all about patience.

You can do maples. Japanese maple is an amazing tree. There are also a few elms you could do, but yeah living in a cold environment sev rely limits your choice.

But keep in mind, you can essentially turn anything to a bonsai, bonsai is a style. Just buy trees that grow well in your area, buy ones which can fit into a smaller pot and start practicing.
