living space, location (climate, property, etc), activity level, previous experience, time you have to devote to the dog (some dogs need constant companionship, others are more independent)

I know "ideal" can be subjective. A lazy person living in a city apartment might imagine a husky is their ideal dog because they're beautiful but after a few months of having a dog they can't manage they would rethink that concept.
