Hello /an/,
I found this guy on the wall. What is it and should I proceed to kill it with fire?

It's a shield bug. It kinda looks like a Tessaratomid. Where do you live?
>>2172887
Malaysia
>>2172890
That explains it then. It's a giant shield bug from the family Tessaratomidae. They're big and colourful and harmless.

Although now that I look at it the long antennae are throwing me off and it could be a really fucked up looking Malaysian katydid that I've never seen. Shield bug antennae don't look like that.

Well, dad came in and sprayed insecticide at it; then proceeded to cover it writhing on the floor with a container. It has a giant, light brown stinger.
>>2172918
At least, I think it's a stinger.
>>2172934
No, that's the ovipositor. It can't sting. That's almost definitely a katydid. It sure had me fooled, I've never seen one that looked so flat.
>>2172939
It sure didn't look like any of the katydids I looked up on Google.
Thanks for the help, learn new things everyday.

The first picture totally had me confused, but the second one, showing the underside, confirms it.
Katydids can look pretty fucked up, especially in SEA where you are, but I've never seen one like yours.

All the insects I've seen around here I've never seen before. So, we're in the same boat.
If ever I come across more of these weird looking insects, I'll be sure to post it. It's bound to happen sooner or later.
