and why is that?

Well I finally got my job at the raptor center, and it's everything that I expected. Cleaning cages, thawing frozen mice, cutting up chickens. I love it.

Hey /an/ this may be a bit /adv/ related, but we all love animals.

My 6yo Siberian has been diagnosed with Distemper 3 weeks ago and has been a strong dog so far, he recently developed weakness in his hind legs and we are like crazy looking for vet clinics in Mexico willing to practice an NDV Spinal Tap on him.

So far for the bit of backstory. I've been living with my girlfriend for a year, Apollo is my dog and my gf has only known him for two years, he has fallen ill before due some chronic gastrointestinal problems caused by some poisoning episodes, but other than that he has never fallen to sickness caused by my stupidity.

Two months, when coming back home we found a little white dog on the street who was following everybody, my gf instantly wanted to help the pup and wanted to bring her home, I agreed to have her outside and give her food, but I did not want to become responsible for another dog, specially as money is a bit lacking.. I basically said no and the gf insisted nonstop, she brought the dog back in even after I said we couldn't keep her, Apollo was due his vaccines and could be immune to any shit that dog could've had.

We had her sister come pick the dog up, and long story short, the dog was back the next day as she didn't want it anymore, don't know the reasons, probably having something to do with her untrained Pitbull, anywho my gf kept wanting to keep the dog and shit even though I told her of the risks and the fact we only had money saved for Apollos vaccines, not for a second dog.

Shortening the story, little white dog got a severe case of distemper and was put down weeks after, fast forwarding even more, Apollo suddenly got symptoms of Neuro Distemper and was rushed to the vet with a poor prognosis which got better and better, but his strength has been declining and we are looking for more alternatives.. continuing.

If you are still interested after reading all this.. my main issue is that I am trying to focus on my dog first without placing any blame, but sometimes it makes me incredibly angry to know if my girlfriend had just listened and do what I told her, this would not have happened, we wouldn't have restless nights, and I am constantly on the verge of tears because my dog, my companion is going through this horrible virus which may or may not take him away from me or leave him severely impaired.

How can I overcome this feeling? Should I overcome it at all?

I know my gf should've known better, but it's just unfair she gets to learn her fucking lesson with MY dog.
>>
the fact that you LET it happen speaks volumes. do they not have fucking shelters in Mexico? not one within driving distance? you could have dropped the dog off yourself if she refused, but you didn't. you could have told her to spend her own money on the new dog if she wanted to keep her, but you didn't. you could have spent your money on your dog's vaccines instead of taking on another animal you don't have the means to care for, but you didn't.

bitch all you want, this was preventable. obviously she is very much in the wrong, but you decided to just let it happen and now your dog is dying because of it. good fucking job.

and please tell me you aren't still dating her. I would have dragged my bf's ass to the curb if he acted so irresponsible with an animal's life
>>
>>2005127

All shelters are euthanasia shelters. The only humane shelter does not take dogs under request or surrendered dogs, only dogs they find themselves on the streets to put up to adoption.

No, they are not within driving distance and we were facing a hard time with money at the time, we couldn't spend extra of our budget.

I didn't put a single amount of money on that dog, we used what we had available to feed her.

As I clearly stated before, Apollo was due his yearly vaccines around the time he got infected, even if he had been vaccinated the day before he got infected, he would have still contracted Distemper

What's the one animal you wish you could have as a pet, that you know you personally could never own?

For me, it's pigs. I would love it if pigs stayed baby-sized forever, but they do not. ;__;

A "teacup" pig will be 60 pounds minimum as an adult. China has recently managed to produce a smaller but it is not a stable breed yet and not for sale.

Hi guys. This is Leo. I've had him for about 2 months. He is my first pet ever and unfortunately the building where I live is a no-pet allowed building. What options do I have? I don't have medical insurance for a therapist to provide a prescription for an emotional support animal at the moment'; so how can I keep my pet?

Anon if you lived in a no-pet building you shouldn't have gotted a pet, and if you gotted a pet first you shouldn't have moved into a no-pet building. I can't inderstand how you got into this predicament.

You have to move. Don't you dare give away/sell/abandon Leo. I will find you and gut you like an anchovy if you abandon that pooch.
>>
>>2004570
Fair enough and I know I shouldn't have. I was afraid of dogs until 2 months ago. I could never see myself going inside a fenced area with 6+ dogs at the dog park before. He has changed my life and I will not leave him. Thing is I can't move yet so I'll have to go to court with the landlord if it needs be.
>>
>>2004567
#1 reason dogs are brought to a shelter are because the owner has to move/has moved/is living in an area what does not allow dogs.

Your options are slim; either move where you ARE allowed to have dogs, or get rid of your dog. Luckily you have a cute puppy. Unfortunately your puppy is black and extremely plain looking. I can't imagine you would be any good at screening potential adopters, so I would advise looking for local rescue groups. Screening people is very difficult to do.

Do you really want someone who is stupid enough to get a dog while they are living in a no dog apartment, to be solely responsible for training and rearing an 8 week old puppy?

Do rats love their owners? Like, do they actually care? Or are they just like mice or hamsters who don't seem to care at all for you unless you have food? Do they crave attention? Cuddle? I'm looking for an apartment pet, but I want something that will actually enjoy and care about my company.

>>
Yeah I would say they do, and I would extend that to some mice too. In my experience they really seem to miss you when you are gone and they seem to choose their owner/really treat different people differently.

If you are doing it right they will sit and wait for you to let them out and get excited when they see you. Some individuals almost act like dogs who wants to be petted.

Rats and mice are highly intelligent and you can learn them tricks , they all have their own personality and they can be very loyal (one of my males really hated everyone but me when it came to touching stuff in his cage, like REALLY hated everyone else and bit everything that even came close to his "territory".. but when it came to me he just ran over and started to climb up my arm, wanting to sit on my shoulder and follow me around the house :) )

Rats feel empathy to the point that they will save a friends life (Another rat) instead of getting food, so i'm going to assume that if you are nice to your rat they will feel a lot of love for you.

Is it okay to hold a dog or cat by the scruff?

Will a dog correct their bad behavior better or see you as the pack leader if you hold it by the scruff as a form of punishment ?
19 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Hold yes, carry no.

Dogs don't have the bullshit "pack" mentality. It was bred out of them centuries ago. Train your dog properly.
>>
>>2004068

No.

And it hurts like hell as well.

Mothers use it to carry babies, but not adults. You'll just piss off the dog.

Correct bad behaviour by positively reinforcing good behaviour. It's a dog, it has no idea what it's doing.
>>
Cats dont have the elastic skin in the scruff as adults that they do as kittens, and they weigh a hell of a lot more. trying to lift by the scruff is a good way to harm your cat

It is cute but it's also just a baby. They get a little rougher looking when they grow up. Fat and sway backed. But I love pigs so I still think they're cute.

>>2004101

They're completely different from cats and dogs. You'd have to meet one to really know what they're like. They don't chew stuff up but they will explore it with their mouth. Their nose and mouths are their shovel/hands. They can be destructive because they like to root but I wouldn't describe them as any more destructive than a dog and if you keep them busy they don't do anything like that.

They're incredibly intelligent, more so than dogs. It's pretty easy to potty train them because they are naturally fastidious about where they shit. Even my full time full size outdoor hogs have a potty corner.

They don't like to be picked up ever. They can be noisy. They are needy socially and mentally so if you're not going to devote your life to them, get too. They also should spend much of their time outdoors. They can be well behaved indoors for periods of time but they are outdoor animals at the end of the day.

If you have the right situation they're incredibly rewarding pets. Very loving, can learn complex tasks and even display clear logical analysis. And very endearing. Mine "sing" to me.
