What are some good insects to keep as pets that are not spiders?
>insects
>that aren't spiders
did you post just to trigger my autism?
hissing cockroaches
hmm idunno if a colony counts as pets but ants are interesting as fuck, and you can't go wrong with honeybees. they're awesome, they make honey, they do god's work, and they need a hand as well.
All right my fellow human beings.
I am looking for a low maintenance pet. Can be whatever (Fish, bird, reptile, whatever aside from insects I fucking hate them). Must be cheap or easily available in the wild (I live in Italy).
Back home there's a small lake where cute little water snails live, I'd usually furnish a small acquarium for them and just watch them reproduce and eat algae but I am away from home now.
Thank you.
Betta fish.
Hamsters.

What if I went out with a jar, filled it with random soil, made a few small holes on the top of it, dropped a bit of water in there while providing sunlight and waited what happens?
>>2006535
You might get springtails, or nematodes, or some neat fungus. Maybe some cute babby weeds will grow if you are lucky.
There are some pretty garden snails in Italy, they make nice pets. Good for your skin.
Otherwise, I'm not really sure what is easy to find this time of year.
Any vets here? I need some urgent help.
My dog has recently developed an abscess on his right paw between the 2 most prominent toes. This was noticed today but he has been licking at it for the last few days. Previously I'd thought it was a foreign body lodged in his paw, but examination revealed nothing.
The lump is not tender to palpation but it is tender when I attempted to gently express it. No discharge was noted.
Additionally he has developed unilateral protrusion of his right third eyelid, the same side as the paw, most noticeable when he is at rest, but retracts when he is excited.
When excited he often pauses to dry retch for approximately 30 seconds with nothing produced. This has started today.
Additionally I note he is more lethargic than usual.
His gait is normal and breathing appears to be slightly increased at rest.
3 days ago he ingested a very small amount of any sand containing bifenthrin, approximately one teaspoon, which is well under the amount to cause symptoms in a dog of this size. He showed no symptoms after ingestion.
He is a 2 year old pure bred maremma sheepdog with an unremarkable past medical history, within the normal weight of his size and not neutered.
I think this is an abscess possibly caused by previous foreign body being lodged in his paw.
Could this also be tetanus? I think he has had his normal childhood vaccinations, but I don't know if they routinely give tetanus injections.
Also for treatment, is lancing and drainage in sterile conditions with topical betadine twice daily adequate?
Or should I take him to the vet?
We do not have much money, as a result we only have so much to spend on him. I've been saving up, but I'd rather only spend it when he gets old and needs major surgery, give he is a purebreed and a large dog.
Any help would be appreciated.
Pic related. The lump which I think is an abscess.
The eyelid is much more noticeable when he is not excited. Unfortunately he had decided he didn't want his picture taken without slobbering over my phone.
Usually it covers until it reaches a small portion of the lateral iris but it does not impede vision.
It's strange that it is unilateral.
I like he tries to speak like he's making medical notes, but is obviously not of any medical background. Vets don't come to 4chan, and if they did I certainly wouldn't take my animal to them.
Does /an/ agree?
>fish can only survive an hour in the plastic bag
>a bowl is fine for betta
>lizard nonsense
no, I do not agree.
>>2006225
not really.
it takes a lot longer than one week to cycle a fish tank, especially if you don't actually know how to cycle it. Bettas don't really do that well in bowls. Fish can easily survive 2 days in a plastic bag if the person packing them knows what they're doing.
I don't know about the rest of the advice, but if half the fish advice is wrong I don't know why I'd trust the rest.
> most lizards can grow up to two feet long
If all birds of prey died out, would there be any big difference to the ecosystem? All the animals birds of prey eat are already eaten by other animals, so there's really no point.
>>2005994
Of course you idiot, pigeons and starlings would be an example of overpopulation without predators in the sky
>>2005996
>implying humans and cats wouldn't just shoot them
>>2006000
Guys it's okay, if we fuck up the ecosystem we can just shoot everything.
These fuckers keep getting into my house. Any tips on how to keep them out?

I've been thinking, why is horse shit not a long cylinder but a series of spheres?
Why are all orangutans fatasses?
>>2005891
They're not. Only captive orangs get that fat, mostly because they are crammed together on very small living spaces, even though they are supposed to roam solitarily.
Pic is a majestic orang male. He's sadly not wild, but obviously still has more space to move about in. Also, bear in consideration that this beast is fuking huge.
I want to know why goat shit is tiny balls and why cow shit is a hot wet shower when they're both ruminants.
So I'm a small business owner and we're making the move from a two-man company towards hiring people and getting office space.
I'm looking for ideas for an office pet. Cats, dogs, and anything furry to which people are/can be allergic are out. We want an animal that'll generally leave employees alone while still being a morale boost and unifying force.
So far I have:
>Tegu
Big, sociable lizard that can free range throughout the office if its enclosure is adequate. I figure anyone we hire, we can take some underarm from a shirt and leave that smell in its hide/enclosure to familiarize it with people.
>Chameleon free range
Set up a window and wall with plants, a feeder (yes, you can keep a feeder full of dubia roaches that won't escape), UV lights, misters, etc. Just let something like a Panther chameleon chill. I'm worried that leaving it in a break room would lead to problems and maybe stress it out too much.
>Blue tongued skink
It'd mostly chill in its enclosure but they're easygoing and calm lizards. It'd be less interactive but still there.
Any other ideas?
Some things:
>This is not our permanent office by a long shot, we have plans for a permanent office but this is just space we're renting
>Fish would be hard to move to new office space, at least if we did fish right
>There is going to be one animal up front but it's strictly a display animal. Our company's named after it, but it just isn't very sociable or appropriate for an office pet - pic related
axolotls
cute, unique and can be hand fed after some time

Get a hamster
>>2005872
Letting a reptile roam around the office isn't a good idea. It's going to get stepped on or distract your employees. It would also be a huge liability if one of your workers gets bit or has a phobia.
Set up a large vivarium with some sort of small active lizards like a steppes runners or curly tailed lizards. If you want something more "personable" get a bearded dragon or a smaller species of tortoise.
When i was a child, i liked frogs so much i wanted to become one as an adult. Then one day i was at my father's house, and my aunt asked about what i wanted to be when i grew up, and i answered "a frog", as always, but she said that i couldn't be a frog but i could be a vet to take care of frogs. I almost cried that day.
in taxonomy you're the retarded nephew of frogs.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3334816/S-African-judge-lifts-domestic-ban-rhino-horn-trade.html
"A South African judge on Thursday lifted a domestic ban on trade in rhino horns, alarming conservationists who described it as an 'extremely dangerous move' that could worsen a poaching crisis.
"The government said it planned to appeal against the ruling, which was delivered in the Pretoria High Court after two South African game breeders fought a legal battle to overturn the moratorium.
"... 'Lifting the ban is an extremely dangerous move,' Jason Bell, director of International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in South Africa, told AFP.
'It is setting an unnecessary precedent by allowing domestic trading of horns even though the horns won't be allowed to leave the country.
'If the international ban is lifted, history has shown that poaching and illicit trade will increase dramatically.
'The rhino population will disappear in two to three years if the Chinese consumption continues at the rate that it is today.'

I have no words. I have never heard of such reckless judicial insanity. Its utterly mad. He may as well decreed a rhino genocide.
The problem I keep seeing is that so many of our planet's most unique animals are on the continent with the least ecological sense or grasp of consequences.
We continue to see rare animals being harvested by the most vulgar of opportunists so they can then waste the money on stupid shit that is gone in a year just for some baubles.
And as a result, the entire planet must bear the willful extinction of one of our precious, unique creatures for the remaining eternity of the universe.
All so Sayeed can have a new CD changer in his 1998 Subaru that he will sell in a year for some other trinket.
Utter madness.

There's something I don't get. I saw a guy on TV many years ago shooting rhinos with tranquilizer darts and cutting the horn off in their sleep. This was meant to discourage poaching.
My question is that if the only part of the rhino that is worth killing it for is the horn, then why don't poachers or government agents or whatever use tranquilizers? I mean tranquilizers mean more rhinos which means more horns which means more money. It could be legalized so people could get their rhino horns and rhinos could be protected. It seems like a win-win situation here.
>>2005701
This is why I hate pretty much all Asians. The Africans never really killed that many rhinos (or other animals to the point to mass extinction) as much as fucking gooks have. The goddamn zipper-heads will kill anything if shoving a part of it up their ass has a chance of "lessening the effect" of their cold. Hopefully they grow out of it like the colonial Brits and other Europeans did.
Japs are best friend tho
>>2005703
The tranqs would be expensive. And they'd have to bandage and care for the wound when they cut the horn off. Also expensive. The whole thing is really fucked up, anyway. In the end they're still harming an animal, taking it's defense away, for money.
Hey guys I was wondering. I'm going through a rough point in my life I have no friends and I need a little companion. I have to dogs. But they tend to stay away from me. Not pay me any attention. So I'm looking for a small pet I can keep with me in my room another dog isn't and option and I don't want anything that needs a lot of room because the dogs have free roam of house except my bedroom I can keep my door closed . so my criteria is something loving. Something under a hundred dollars. I'm looking for a lil buddy what's halls suggestions.I just want something I can take really good care of and spoil. Right now I'm looking into a rat. Anything else you think would fit the bill??

are tehre any lists of common bonsai species which can grow indoors and will not kill my cat?
>>2005562
You have pretty much nothing. I wouldn't bother with bonsai unless
>>2005562
none, bonsai do shit indoors, you need a greenhouse or grow them outside.
they aren't windowsill plants.
This is my cat. He is beautiful.
>>2005541
i'm sure your parents paid a lot of money for that show quality ragdoll. unless he's from a BYB, those cats cost a lot of $$$
Nah, paid myself. Cost a shitload of money, but I changed the minds of some people around me at least, getting them to realize that cats too are worth money. People will just shrug if you tell them you spend money on a dog, but if you do the same for a cat they call you crazy.
>>2005559
well he is a gorgeous cat, looks like he's got awesome genetics. most people who balk at spending money on a cat are either shelter ideologues or cat haters, so whatever, fuck em.
