Bird thread.
Mammals and fish need not apply.
Reptiles technically ok.
How about monotremes?
I really want some amber with a feather in it.
I've wanted a bird for years. Been thinking of getting a green cheek conure. Honestly would prefer a cockatoo but the screams are too loud.
I'm just worried what if birds aren't for me and I lose interest in it. I don't want it to bond and then get heartbroken if I had to rehome it.
I've handled birds a lot but never owned one. I dont know

I stopped housing water pets, because I'm bad at mimicking their environment, but I do have some snails. I don't need any suggestions. I'm just bumping this thread.
THE /aq/ THREAD WILL ALWAYS BE SUPERIOR REBELLIOUS FIEND

This is my harmless tidepooler. Absolutely no regrets about getting a crayfish, they're dead easy to take care of and have way more interesting behaviors than fish.
Looking into a field based around animals such as dogs, live stock, and/ or wildlife, and I'm a bit stuck as to which to pursue.
Anybody have some insight on the professions of putting dogs, cows, and giraffes back together?
>How much does it suck trying to become a vet?
>Vet tech?
>Livestock?
>Exotic?
I just wanna be around animals all day but still have some sense of free time to work on my farm.
Just a quick bump, and I know this'll get some flack considering what kind of board /an/ is, but what kind of job would I go after to help change the social perceptions on pitbulls?
Maybe a shelter that specializes in homing pits?
I like the thought of it.
also quints btw
>>2044444
i work with cows. they break all the time.
it takes a lot to be a vet though, at least for livestock, after the years of school you will basically be popping cysts, burning horns, and checking cow genitals all day.
I got this baby L caerulea or White's Tree Frog a week ago. I have a
>10 gallon tall tank (12lx12wx18h)
>live big leaf plant
>6x3" water pond
>heater
>65-80 temp changes
>60-80 humidity changes with misting
>feeding small crickets every other night
What do you do about feeding, vitamins, light (I read both need and don't need uvb light)?
Thanks!
I don't know anything about frogs but he's a super qt op.
>>2036859
Feeding shouldn't be a problem, they attempt to eat everything. I can't even open the tank without getting jumped. Just get a varied diet of crickets, locusts, roaches, flies, mealworms, etc. The standard vitamin powders work fine.
I've had the oldest one now for over 10 years and I don't keep them with UV. Considering they're nocturnal I doubt they need it.
>>2036866
Damn I never knew that they could live that long. Even in captivity

Bumping in case someone makes a new thread at bump limit even though this was made before the bump limit. Though I wanted to fucking do it.
Continued from last thread.
Is RO water a meme?
Tap water is 150-200 TDS.
RO is 0 TDS
But 0 TDS is bad for fish so most people add a remineraliser that takes it back up to 200TDS
>Taking the dissolved solids out to put them back in again.
>>2044560
It's because all tap water is not created equal. Some has too many silicates, phosphates, other shit you may not want. Diatoms love that stuff.
What do I need to no if I'm getting a German Shepherd (puppy)? What is everything I need to know as someone who's never had one before
>>2036804
hope you like running
a lot of running
a lot
like until it dies
Why are you getting this breed? Any reason in particular?
GSD's can have a lot of health problems, I suggest you read the Wikipedia article on the breed to start with. Do you have a reputable breeder? If it's coming from some guy who just breeds them or a store, I'd be worried. Odds are what your save in puppy cost will go to vet bills ten times over. You'd be much better off in the long run finding a good breeder who screens for hip dysplasia.
They're also powerful large dogs that require good training and a lot of exercise. You'll want perfect recall and good manners on walks as a lot of people are afraid of GSDs and one nibble could result in a lot of trouble.
But generally they're great dogs.
>>2036810
Because I read they are protective of their family and are very attentive.
This is important as I want to feel safer having caught some assholes in my yard trying to steal shit.
Plus they're fucking gorgeous.
As for where I'm getting him it's from a shelter.
Do you hate cats?
I don't hate MY cat.

Almost forgot to include as to why anyone hates cats, that is, if you do so.

Thinking about getting a ball python when I get a job. Currently a Comp. Sci. college student taking ~15 credit hours per semester. I like snakes a lot and I'd definitely be happy to have a snake out while doing work and also just to handle it so it wouldn't be cramped up in the cage all day.
(Specifically ball python things, but I'm sure there's some crossovers between different kinds of snakes):
What should I be aware of before getting a snake?
How much do these guys cost as pets? Is electricity for the heat lamps a huge issue? Vet costs?
How long do frozen rodents store for and how many times a month do they eat?
Where should I look to buy a ball python? How old should it be? How do I know it is a reputable dealer?
General warnings or tips?
Thanks
>>2043708
Ok OP, first of all this ain't your blog. But i love my Sausage so i'll share what i have done
Royal Pythons/ball pythons are the most chill motherfuckers on the planet, they will do nothing if you let them, they will hug you if you grab them, and are overall cute as fuck with little hats.
They are smooth as fuck, they eat every week or so, they don't really need that big a terrarium, and do great alone. Their shits are nasty and they often poop while swimming. Also bitches to clean up after
PetSMart sells them for ~$60 bucks, they don't need heat laps though a uv bulb might be necessary. Heat pads are a must. Vets are usually for impacted stomachs and broken bones. ~$300
Store for a good 3 months below freezing. about 3-4 times a month
For a basic ball, look for local breeders. Or if it seems shady, petsmart/petco seems mediocre, but ok. more than 3 weeks old for sure They have customers and a decent website
They don't bite often, they are very chill. LOCK YOUR FUCKING TERRARIUM escape artists. If they dont eat for 2 weeks it should be fine, but any more than three you should seek medical help.
they grow to about 4-5 feet long
>>2043708
>Where should I look to buy a ball python?
Check your local craigslist/newspaper/shelter, or contact your local herp society. Maybe go to a show before you buy to meet some breeders.
>How old should it be?
An adult would be easier.
>How do I know it is a reputable dealer?
Get to know how the snakes are doing at different places before purchasing one. Ask for feed schedules, issues with past sheds or going off food, stuff like that. Ask for advice on snake-specific forums, 4/an/ is too slow.
>General warnings or tips?
Find a good herp vet or exotic vet with snake experience before you need it.
>>2043720
Sorry I am new here D=
Don't know the ins and outs of posting
Thanks for the info; definitely helpful. How often should I change the stuff in the cage that I use for a ground cover?
My old elementary school teacher had some snakes and one of them got out in the school. Thought it was a goner. 2 years later it showed up nice and fat; had been feeding on mice in the walls of the school.
I see it as being pointless and a waste of the person's GPA.
>Being a vet has a lower status and income
>The number of years of studying in grad school is the same though
>Job security is somewhat lower than being a doctor
>You memorise the same shit about anatomy so it's not like vet school is easier
>Both are just as stressful as you need to perform operations and that is gruesome
>Vet school may as well be harder as you need to deal with so many species of animals
Just look at what people said in this thread >>16723550
It's all a myth.
>>2044937
Sorry should be >>>/adv/16723550

No. Fuck off.
You had your thread where people tried to explain it to you, but you refused to accept any other opinion than your own. I won't baited into a pointless argument with you any more.
>>2044937
Even though it's not even worth saging a thread on such a slow board, but fuck it.
Sage
Hey /an/ I'm just crossing by asking a kind of important question to me.
Do you consider yourself and your animal companion as master and pet, or as friends?
I'm afraid people mock me for thinking of my pet as my friend, so I want to know the correct way of looking at this dilema.
If someone seriously mocks you for that, fuck them.
Of course that doesn't mean you should treat your animal like a human. If you have a cat, consider what a cat needs to be happy. If you have dog, consider it's needs, and so on.
Also nothing wrong with being silly like talking gibberish to your pet. But you must accept that someone may call you silly for it. That may seem to contradict the first thing I said, but it doesn't. Life has the strange quality that it is both the most serious and most ridiculous thing at the same time.

It's the snow storm. Bad dog owners are all locked in with their poorly trained beasts so they're shitposting. Good dog owners are busy walking their dogs anyways.
