Smug
Saw a bonsai thread yesterday, seems to have died since.
so heres a new one.
Absolute beginner here, trying to grow something out of clippings, but i dont know how plants work.
So now i have some cut off branch pieces in a bucket in a shady part of the greenhouse.
any tips/tricks, advice on making clippings grow?
alternatively, other absolutely free ways to get bonsai.
Don't know about about trimmings but I'm a beginner as well, just bought some stock at the nursery for like $15 and turning it into a bonsai. damn it looks ugly as fuck, I suck at pruning

im trying to see if i can grow something without putting any money into it, so any free method of getting a tree is what im doing.
the cuttings are mostly an experiment because cloning trees sounds like a cool thing.
FUCKING SNAILS ATE (some of) MY LABURNUM SEEDLINGS

How do we save them /an/???
Personally, I want to have a small cheetah zoo/habitat, a breeding facility, more or less.
Something like Michael Jackson's neverland ranch, except just cheetahs and dogs
Maybe some elephants
You ever think cheetahs will be domesticated? Theyre like dogs, except they're cats
Seems like theyd be great pets, and they already can be, dispite being wild animals
>>2425414
>You ever think cheetahs will be domesticated?
No
Aside from the questionable and accidental domestication of housecats, felines arent animals that can be domesticated.
>nah buddy, just let them die out, they can't be domesticated !!!!!11111111111111
>>2425430
Have you ever observed cheetahs for a while?
There's literally no difference in behavior compared to house cat shits.
Cheetahs are just 5 times bigger, that's all. They even make the same fucking noises.
>>2425454
Catfags fail to take responsibility as it is, do we really need 5X as large cats running around unsupervised?
Lets discuss animals that could have existed, animals that might exist somewhere or animals that might exist in the future.
Whats the most likely form alien life would take?
Heres where you can read all of wayne barlowes expedition.

And it's plagiarized from a concept made by Barlowe.
Is there a definite answer on the largest dog breed? Like, for average weight, not highest outlier.
>>2448960
Irish Wolfhounds apparently are the tallest breed on average. They can be almost 7 feet tall on their hind legs.
>>2448973
I'm talking about weight actually, I can't for the life of me find a list of dog breeds based on weight, or an answer on the largest dog breed by average weight (as opposed to largest specific dog such as an english mastiff being the largest dog to date). English Mastiffs, might I add, are likely the largest breed of dog, but I'm looking for an actual list on top of it.
Everything that turns up when I search for it is along the lines of "25 large dog breeds" or "list of large dog breeds you wish you owned". Mostly clickbait sights generating traffic. Then they list German Shepherds and shit and to me it's like they don't understand the fucking question.
>>2448981
English mastiffs for weight. Thread over, there you go.
I saw some brown pigeons is that normal?

DINOSAURS'N SHEEIT?!

They aren't common at all, but yeah, it's normal. I love seeing these guys inbetween all the other black and white pigeons. I believe they are actually called red pigeons rather than brown pigeons though
It derives from domesticated pigeon stock. Domestic pigeons breed with wild rock doves, though our 'wild' pigeons are actually feral pigeons as they were brought to the USA in the 1600s(and basically all around the world). I forgot where they are actually native too.
It's normal in most places with pigeons because they're not actually wild pigeons.
Want to hear some theories on domestication and breeding. What criteria does an animal have to reach to be a new breed?
What direction do you think some of our current breeds will go over the next few decades/centuries? Especially if gene manipulation becomes more mainstream and affordable.
For me I want to see more patterns develop in rodents. Mice for example have calico coats where many other rodents can't produce them. More dalmation/stripe patterns would be interesting to see too in rabbits/rats.

I believe a breed is properly produced when you can start reliably predicting the offspring enough to fit a standard. For example, let's say fanciers want the labradoodle to be a recognized breed among major kennel clubs. First, the breed club would get together and decide what the standard should be. When people hear standard they usually just think physically, but standards also include personality to an extent. Like is the labradoodle generally friendly towards strangers? Are they usually stubborn? Are they smart? Etc. This standard is based on what most labradoodles are currently or thought to be, maybe with some small improvements to the breed like slightly longer ears or shorter snout or they will only accept certain colors and coat types. But the main idea is there now. Now, they have to be able to reliably get dogs that fit the standard in a litter. This part is usually made faster by inbreeding, but it still takes a long time and a lot of careful breeding. For example, the standard for height may be 18-22 inches. But if litters keep having huge deviations from that, like 16 inches and 25 inches, there's going to be an issue. Some odd ones are fine, but you should not have a mixed bag every breeding. Another thing is you can't outcross to poodle or lab and expect fast results to correct things. Yes, outcrossing is necessary for breeding a new breed. However outcrossing will bring you back many steps from getting reliable litters again, although it may bring along much needed genetic diversity. It's almost like a soft reset. Then your breed has to be accepted by kennel clubs like the AKC, really shouldn't be hard once most labradoodles fit a standard because the AKC gives few fucks about health. The CFA is another story entirely.

>What criteria does an animal have to reach to be a new breed?
Bred to a standard that the basic temperament and physique are uniform throughout a litter.
What direction do you think some of our current breeds will go over the next few decades/centuries?
German Shepherds will cease to be bred with that abominable slope back due to the attention it's been given today.
Malinois will become the new GSD, backyard bred and very common. Due to their hyperactive nature and NEED to be trained they will/their mixes will fill shelters and be responsible for many maulings.
Small Breeds will continue to degenerate in both health and temperament due to poor breeding habits and accessibility.
>For me I want to see more patterns develop in rodents.
Rats are awesome pets and the lack of truly established breeds is depressing. I'd hope that would change in the future but something tells me rats will never be dog/cat tier companions in the mainstream.
hey /an/. I have a problem.
>backroud
>have this kitten.
>had it since it was like a week old. had to >bottle feed kitty so kitty lived
it isnow a teenage-ish kitten. still tries to >randomly nurse when it sit on my lap
>is very affectionate about it.
>it always leaves my pants covered in drool
>I have tried to stop the little meowzers. But >I'm kind over punishing her for it. I'd rather save that for scratching or biting. something worth it.
pic is the perpetrator caught in the act.
thank you first the help this is getting awkward

It'll learn no more milk is to be had
>>2449124
Form of separation anxiety from being separated from the mother at a young age. The mother usually teaches the kitten to stop after the nursing stage. Not entirely sure how to stop it sorry buddy maybe somebody else will have the answer for you
>>2449124
Only thing I can think of is to have a blanket or towel or something like that nearby to put over your lap when your cat seems like it wants to sit on your lap. Your cat will probably eventually stop this behavior, my cat used to suckle on my blanket but stopped on her own.
Did these groomers cut my dog's eye?
Jeez, I hope not. Sure it's not an eye booger?
>>2448836
It's not moving so that's what has me worried that it's not. He doesn't seem that bothered by it, his eyes not red and there's no blood.
>having a meme dog that needs "professional" groomers
If evolution happens to all animals, are humans evolving right now?
>>2448799
yeah no shit animeposter
>>2448799
Yes, we are evolving a predisposition to religion and superstition due to policies which encourage the poor to have as many children as possible.
Yes, one of the biggest changes between us and our cave dwelling ancestors is that our brains have actually gotten smaller since we can rely on society for many of our survival needs.
Does anyone have/know of a really good online dichotomous key for identifying pretty much anything?
It seems like a lot of "What is this?" posts could be easily solved by just having a nice dichotomous key for everyone to use online. I've tried looking for one by haven't been able to find one. I've been thinking about getting into microscopy, and so I want a dichotomous key to look up anything I find, but I think if we could have one large dichotomous key for every known living thing it would be incredibly useful, no?
>>2448756
I don't think there would be dichotomous keys that start all the way back to lizard, bird, pig, or cow.
I think if you want it to include every living thing it would be far to large to be practical. especially if you would go into subspecies, that have only small differences between them.
>>2448825
But if it weren't a physical paper dichotomous key and instead an internet database, it wouldn't be constrained by size. And I don't suppose going into subspecies is required, just enough where people are able to identify what ever they happen across?
How hard could it be to assemble something like this? Has one already been made?
What did God mean by this?

What's that black mark? At first I thought it was a second eye.
What kind of caterpillar is this? They're all over the place. Should I let them be or are they a pest?
Set it on fire and post. These have a toxic similar to fire ants
i got a new kitten and my old cat doesn't like her. what should i do?
>>2448480
Idk I'm in the same boat. I have to show love to the kitten or she will feel horrible. Mfw the older cat sees her stealing my attention away from her though...
stop being a faggot and get a dog
>>2448480
Throw it in the trash and get a new one. It's just a shitty cat.
Will rehoming a kitten give him abandonment issues?
I recently took in a 6 or 7 week old kitten off the street to give him a home. Unfortunately, I don't feel overly attached to him, and my other cat despises him. The two were not properly introduced, thanks to my pigheaded mother. My mom doesn't really want him either.
Would rehoming him be bad for him psychologically? I've heard that dogs that get "passed around" appear to development a fear of abandonment. I'd hate for the kitten to get something similar.
>>2448471
It's possible, but most likely no. Animals that young typically bounce back well, and it's better for him to be rehomed than in a place that doesn't want him.
>>2448471
I'm sure the kitten will be fine, he's young and hasn't been with you long. He'll probably be happier in the long run.
>>2448471
It's just a shitty cat. They're pretty much background furniture and incapable of too much emotion anyway.
