In the past 6 months my relationship with my female cat had been breaking down. Before this we were really close and she would sleep on my bed, cuddle when I was at the computer and follow me around the house.

It was a gradual deterioration. First she stopped coming to me when I called, then she would stay out of my room and it got worse from there. At one point it got so bad that she would hiss when I picked her up, run away when I tried to pet her or pee around the house.

So yesterday my sister came over and she was working on her laptop on my bed while I was at the computer when suddenly my cat just walks into the room, jumps up on the bed and cuddles with my sister. I saw this and went over to the cat to pet her and she didn't mind at all.

After my sister left the cats personality did a complete 180. Now she is back to her old self before the break down.

What the hell? Any cat experts know what is going on here?

Cat expert here.

I can safely say that you seem to own a cat.

Cats are not fully domesticated, and live a symbiotic life with humans, where they can also survive without humans.
In other words, she isn't getting any actual use out of you because you probably don't call her to eat, or let her eat on her own, do survival stuff without you. You have to "soft domesticate" a cat in order to have a good relationship. Be the gate keeper of food. Call her to dinner, pet her, then feed her. Give her a reason to want to be friendly, or she won't, because she's not a dog. Not bred for companionship. She's a cat, and she's using you for food.

So this morning I went into my backyard and spotted THIS lil nigguhh lizard that i've never seen before in my life we looked at each other for a second but before I could snap a photo it ran into the bushes super fast so here is an artist rendition of him. He was about as tall as a blu-ray case and could easily stand on a palm of my hand. Its most striking feature was the large feet and it stood upright.

What I want to know is what species of lizard could this be?

Figured. Sounded like a monitor of some sort. Probably a baby.

Wish I could find the cute pic of the pet monitor that's standing in someone's house that's always posted on this board.

How do you guys cope with losing your pets?

My pupper (pic related) passed away back in October and would have been 15 today.
It doesn't help that my uncle had to put down his dog yesterday and I keep having dreams of playing around with my dog even though he's no longer here.

I thought I had it under control but now I keep getting a mixture of excitement and depression whenever I think of him (and his brother who passed away 4 years ago).

When my dog dies, I'll just adopt another one. I'll be sad as fuck but it will also open up more time and energy for another dog that really needs a home. In return I get a new companion, something to distract me and keep me on schedule for responsibilities(such as walking the dog keeps me outside more).

I still have dreams of a dog I had 17 years ago who was hit by a car. Its always the same shit too, where I think I have her back or have to 'save' her through nightmarish bullshit or in the dream I remember she's gone and that this is a dream so I try to appreciate it. But at that realization she keeps getting farther and farther away. Either way it fucks me up in the morning.

We recently had to put one of our dogs down. He was 9, and him and our other dog were practically like brothers.

It happened recently, so I guess it's more expected that I still have dreams about him. But it's weird. While I'm sad and I feel like it wasn't fair, it's cliche as fuck but I'm mostly happy he was in my life to begin with. If I'd known all the adventures we'd get into, ending with his emotionally painful end, the day we adopted him, I'd choose to adopt him a million times. He's more than worth the pain I'm going through right now.

What kind of small (possibly fluffy) cute pet could I get that would be ok with holding and cuddling for half hour or less periods? I was thinking rats because they enjoy humans, but they are kind of squirmy, and almost too small. Cats and dogs are alright too, but that's not really what I'm looking for.

I was thinking a rabbit maybe? Or maybe a couple guinea pigs, though they seem a bit skittish.

I don't know, is this a realistic idea or do animals just not like cuddles?

I don't know many rabbits that even like to be picked up. My cats will jump on my lap and hang out for hours though. Cats and dogs were built for cuddles. The others are not in their final forms yet.

I wish bald eagles weren't associated with the United States. Why do such beautiful birds need to represent such a disgusting and flawed nation? A nation that has killed hundreds of thousands of them, made their eggshells brittle through pesticides, and nearly pushed them to extinction might I add along with other birds of prey. There was a point where the Alaskan government was paying people five dollars for every pair of eagle feet they brought in. The "native" Americans aren't much better, they maim and brutalize them just so they can have their feathers for bizarre religion rituals. A good friend of mine once had to euthanize a bird because natives cut off her feet, and left her bleeding to death in the woods.

Why do we treat them like shit, and then have the audacity to claim they represent our shitty country? Why do we claim we're more valuable than animals? We're not the greatest country on earth. The greatest country on earth was conquered in 1945, and what do you know, their leader respected nature and cared about animal welfare. I know it's odd to use Hitler as an example, seeing as how often they used the reichsadler. But that seems more deserved, just from all the good they did for nature.

What's your opinion /an/? As if I don't already know.

>implying other countries haven't done the same to their national birds

>implying every government ain't disgusting and flawed

Also I think at one point Ben Franklin wanted the national bird to be a turkey. Dunno why they picked the bald eagle. It represents cowardliness when a turkey represents bravery and courage.

So, I've heard that rawhide sucks for dogs. What are some of your experiences with rawhide alternatives, like venison ear and bully sticks?

I have $50 bucks on Amazon, and I'd like to spend them on treats for my dog. He's a pretty aggressive chewer and got through a deer antler in two nights. I already have a really durable Kong.

My dog likes bully sticks, and they last a few days for him, but he's not an aggressive chewer, so maybe more like a day for your dog?
They're literally just dried bull penis, so they are safe to swallow and digestible.
>>
My dog eats rawhide and bully sticks like they're treats.

Nylabones last pretty long but they're messy and she gets bored of them pretty quick.

Elk antlers last several days and she goes crazy for them.

I also have had a Hurley for the past year. It's not really a chew toy but it's the only thing she's never been able to even dent because it's so soft and slippery.

Fucking hell /an/... So I thought I would be leaving my house for a long time so I left my fish tank with my sister. Come back after 3 months and it is covered in algae (expected) and all my fish but my betta and 2 2" bristled nose plecos. Are dead, take water sample to LFS and everything is good but my water is so acidic he said it's basically vinegar. Take out all the water (transportation) and bring it home, so a good 95% water change. Put in new water and a whole bottle of prostart bacteria. Put all the fish and plants back in. 3 days latter and both my plecos die at the same time. take new water sample back to LFS and same problem. What the fuck is happening? I got some chems for it but I would really like to not use them. I think it might be the wood getting old. It's about 6-7 months in the tank. Please please please help me /an/... You are my only hope.

Go buy a ph buffer. I know theres a popular dechlorinator on the market (cant think of name), that dechlorinates and buffers your PH to 7.5, which is a good range for most thing you'll keep. Just use that during all your water changes and you should be good. If it's your wood causing it, it's because it's constantly leeching acids into the water, so for that you'll be best off buying a test kit so you can test it often, you can get a digital one of like 20 bucks online that you can just stick in every time you feed, and if it gets low again, you can just add some buffer to the tank to correct it.
>>
>>2072716
You should take a sample of your tap water in, and have them test that. It sounds like your water source isn't stellar for keeping fish. You probably have low pH and low KH, the latter of which will make your pH unstable and prone to drops. Your betta and plecos were probably hardy enough to take it where as fish with narrower pH ranges couldn't take it.

How do I keep this thing alive? I really didn't expect it to live long, let alone grow, considering it was a dyed rose. Any advise appreciated.

Don't try growing a storebought rose. They require crazy pesticides. Get a good type for your area instead.

But if really serious, change the water daily, and keep rootzone dark. Cut loose the bloom asap.
>>
Just thought it'd be a cool expiriment, considering I got it for my fiancé for V-day. I'm okay with it dying would just like to try anyways. So I should keep the end of the stem dark and cut off the little green sprout?

Counterpoint: that rose is clearly determined to live, and OP has a moral obligation to help it fulfill its mission.

I've always been told that whenever you train a dog, you should always ignore bad behavior and reward desired behavior, but never to hit or yell. I was wondering if /an/ has experience with dogs who respond more to negative attention than positive.

My dog whines in the crate whenever I'm not in his line of vision, but whenever I reward him for being quiet, he whines again whenever I leave. Finally, I firmly told him to be quiet, and he was quiet for the rest of the time he was in the crate, and I rewarded him.

Other than this, I don't ever yell or hit my dog, but I was just curious if punishment would work in addition to positive enforcement.

There are a few schools of thought to dog training, from my observationS and research.

Purely positive, Caesar Milan-ing a dog into submission, and aomething between the two i call correction training. What you did is more in the correction school of thought. Nothing wrong with it. Different dogs respond to different things, and folks have their own preferences.
>>
punishment in the form of isolation or removal from the situation can be helpful depending on the situation and the dog. but physical punishment is just a shitty thing to do

I don't usually come to this board so I know if this is the place to ask but whatever.

My 9 year old dog got a uterus infection. She never had cubs and we never had her operated since we thought about having cubs for a while but then gave up. She began drinking a lot of water recently but we thought nothing of it, up until the point where she stopped eating. We took her to the vet and we have two options: 1, have her operated now (which would be very risky since she's overweight and is pretty much a death sentence) and 2, give her a treatment that might make her push out all the shit that's hurting her through the vaginal tract. We obviously went with 2.

Thing is, she still doesn't want to eat, which makes giving her medication much harder since we can't just slip it in with food. We've tried making chicken and rice into a soupy paste that we force into her mouth with a syringe, and we grind up her medication and mix it with a bit of water so it'll go down somehow. But there's a bigger problem here: she keeps puking numerous times a day, and I'm afraid the medication might be just coming out like that or not making its desired effect since it's ground-up. The vet says she pukes because she hasn't pushed the shit out yet so the infection is still affecting her body, but that doesn't ease my worries since she's weaker than ever now and keeps stumbling and sitting every time we try to get her up so she can do her stuff.

Anyone been in a similar situation before? Can I do anything to ease this along? I've tried giving her the meds intact but she always spits it out even though I've seen other people do it to their dogs. Is there any special trick to it? I've also noticed that her whole backside looks and feels kinda swollen but that might be an effect of the treatment. Any kind of tip would be helpful.

Pic related is her breed.

My cat had this problem. Ended up having to shell out almost 2k because I was a dumbass who put off spaying her for too long(indoor cat).
I almost lost my cat of 13 years. I almost had her put down because I wasn't even sure if her suffering through all this at all + plus recovery and potential post-surgery problems was worth it. Glad I did though, because she healed very well.

You could go to another vet but you may also want to think about whether or not her misery is worth it.
Google 'Pyometra'. I'll show you a less graphic picture of what is going on inside your dog.
>>
>>2075175
Yeah, that's what the vet said she had, I had forgotten the name. Thankfully it's the open type so there's a chance at making it discharge so we can get her back on her feet and make her lose some weight so she can get safely sprayed and not have to deal with this shit again.

I'm very determined about seeing her through it, she's a survivor that managed to overcome numerous health problems as a puppy. I don't want to extend her suffering but I'm not gonna give up just yet.
