I'm sorry if this is an over-done type of thread.

My husband and I are getting new carpet and furniture.

We've had two cats for the last six years, and I've always believed that declawing is inhumane. So we tried all of the typical alternatives (spray bottle when they scratch furniture, buying surfaces for them to scratch and encouraging use of them, rounded caps to cover the claws), nothing has worked. They used to at least run away when we yelled at them for scratching the couch/ottoman/etc, now they don't even bat an eye because they know we won't hurt them.

I was okay with getting them declawed before we acquire nice things in theory, but now that the appointment's been made, I feel like a monster. They are so proud of their claws, and I can't imagine how incomplete they'll feel without them. These are goddamn digits.

I have a week to come up with something more humane that will work. I know it's not the end of their world (I grew up with declawed cats), but it seems really wrong. There must be something else we can do. We don't have a ton of money, or else I'd entertain the notion of a cosmetic procedure.

Any advice would be appreciated. Again, sorry if I'm treading old ground.

Please do not declaw the cats! Especially not older ones, give them up for adoption before doing such a life changing operation. It has so many side effects, some that are even potentially fatal, that I urge you to research exactly what you will be doing to your cat before this operation occurs. Since they are older, dramatic personality change is likely to occur as well, and they will have to relearn how to walk entirely as well. Is having fancy furniture worth causing lifelong pain to your cats over?
While you feel that there is no other alternatives, there is actually plenty more within your budget. One particular one I'm fond of is the "Cat Run" with an outdoor cat house that the cats can spend the day out on that has toys for them to play with. Play with your cats more, see what they like, that may actually be the answer to your problem.
>>
Well, it's outlawed in the UK on the grounds of animal cruelty. So, is it cruel? Yeah.
>>
>>2091047

I don't want to declaw them. We are getting the couch before they are scheduled to get declawed...maybe they will treat it alright. They know I get upset when they dig in to the leather ottoman we just got and at least seem to avoid it a little.

They have destroyed furniture and baseboards beyond repair, though. If we don't go through with this, we need a suitable outlet for them. I'm not trying to level 'fancy' furniture with my pets' well being, but our current couch is completely shredded. You can't sit on the damn thing without springs popping up from how much stuffing's been pulled out, and it's an embarrassing eyesore for company.

We tried the 'cat run'. Since we raised them from kittens, they fear/hate the outside. They sit down, freeze, and act terrified.

I know. That's why I'm seeking advice for an alternative. There's got to be something better.

It's gonna live forever, you'll be bored of it after a few weeks/months and wish you would have never gotten it.

It is very important that you provide a large full spectrum UV bulb and replace it religiously every six months, feed a varied diet of greens and veg (consult care sheet for specifics), and keep the humidity in the appropriate range for your species of tortoise. Failure to do so will result in vitamin deficiency and shell pyramiding. And that's bad.

It is also important, if possible, to provide a secure dig proof escape proof predatory proof outdoor enclosure in direct sunlight for your tortoise if it is at all feasible in your climate. Minimum you should let tortoise be outside a couple days a week during summer months, and bring back inside for night if it's too cold.

Pay attention to the care sheets about enclosure size. They need a ton of space relative to their size.

Tortoises are a big commitment.
>>
Also, watch out for wild caught tortoises being sold, especially russian tortoises. You want a captive bred one. Best species for beginner are Hermann's tortoise, Greek tortoise (very active, extra big enclosure needed), red-foot/yellow-foot tortoise, and russian tortoise if captive bred.

I have a kitten who recently got spayed by the local vet, and honestly i think they rushed this and made a mess of her, ive never seen an incision this large, and before the kitten pulled them out (ive never had a kitten be able to pull them out) immediately she had crappy looking stitches, i took her back, said "your stitches sucked fix it" (paraphrasing) and they gave her two even more fucked up looking staples.

Is this normal? Do vets rush female neutering? Can i take her to a different vet for better stitches? What do?

>>
Bump, need some advice on this, yes I know I'm not posting in a general but their treatment of my cat is leaving me very suspicious
>>
>>2090832
>those staples

I'm very used to surgical glue and dissolvable stitches, which are stitched differently and much less noticeable. Those are average stitches, just different than the dissolvable. The incision would be bigger than normal if they couldn't find everything they needed, or couldn't get it all out with a smaller one. If anything, it would be very small if they wanted to rush. It looks average to me. I think the staples are overkill. Your cat will have to go in once again to get the stitches and staples removed.

Now to me, it looks all healed up. I'm assuming those two big stitches are the ones closing what the kitten had opened. In which case, they really can't do much more that that. The staples look unnecessary to me but who knows, I don't have the cat's bio. If you are unsure about your vet, definitely go shopping for another. In the future, get one of those cloth cones for cats with stitches, especially If they are dissolvable (I prefer dissolvable because it doesn't require removal, but they can be more easily damaged), try to keep the incision are out of water, and attempt to limit the cat's activity.
>>
>>2090858
Thank you very, very, much, well take her back to the same one to get them (stitches and staples) out but if you think its healed then we wont ask someone elses opinion. What's a cloth cone I might ask?

hello

i am looking into interesting animals and plants
so if you know an interesting animal or plant, please post it here, tell us the name of it and maybe why it is interesting.

i will start with the nepenthes
i feel the nepenthes is interesting because it sets up the insects by having the sweet sent of nectar, and when the insects go try taking the nectar, they are trapped in acid.

and this is the way the nepenthes lives

hope yall got something interesting to share

Pic related, "Yareta"

Grows at high altitudes in Peru/Chile in poor, acidic soil and more often on rocks.

It grows so extremely dense that it feels as hard as a rock, or like a hard wood.

It grows only 1.5cm per year, so big patches like in pic related could be up to 3,000 years old.

Elephants, cattle, camels.
You can pretty much ride anything, doesn't mean you should though. You want an animal that is less likely to flip it's shit(and even horses are prone to this) when it's startled and can keep in control if it does. There are people who ride reindeer/caribou but you have to be pretty small and sit higher by their shoulders due to their weak backs. Even the guy in your pic looks like he should be sitting more by the shoulders. Llamas can also be ridden but the weight limit for a person is about 115lbs. So aside from the risks of getting bucked off and trampled, you'd also have to factor in whether or not the animal can handle the extra weight without you eventually crippling it over the years.
