Try a dog shampoo with oatmeal, it's soothing to the skin. Make sure you use a moisturizing conditioner like with coconut oil. Brush him out and fully dry his coat.

Skin problems can be caused by allergies. Allergies to specific proteins are more common than grain allergies.
>>
>>2094607
The dog doesn't look well cared for. The answer is to first put it on a high quality dog food and bath it with oatmeal shampoo as suggested, once a month. If the problem persists you should take the dog in to consider allergies. Though, it looks and sounds like a grooming and nutrients problem.

Questions that don't deserve their own thread.
>doggy style edition
Ask your question, and then search the thread for a question you can answer too. If you have something you want to ask but isn't important enough for a whole thread, throw it down here.

My goilfriend has a dog with some sort of skin problem, she uses pic related on him. She also uses it on her own skin when she has a skin injury that she doesn't want to get infected.

My question is just HOW BAD an idea is this, mildly stupid or she gonna die stupid?

What makes a kitty cat pee blood? Do some cats just do this with no issue? My cat has done it off and on, and I have had him treated. But he seems to have nothing wrong, I just give him some special CATCH ALL urinary problem food and Boom he's better.

I figured something like peeing blood would be a bigger issue, and my google searches would agree. The vet agreed too, but he never has any worse issues.

I live in the sticks though, and this is a simple country vet.

So do some cats just pee blood sometimes like it's no biggie? Boy cat by the way, pretty young too. And absolutely healthy seeming otherwise.
>>
>>2094438

Vet student here. Blood in the cat's urine is NOT normal. Without any further diagnostics, I couldn't really say exactly what is wrong, but what I would say is that cats often present with urinary crystals and this COULD be the case here.

I would be tempted to go find another vet/go back to your vet, get some diagnostics done (e.g a urine analysis) to rule out an infection and discuss renal diets on a permanent basis to see if that would help at all.

Cats hide pain extremely well, your cat may look six hundred percent healthy on the outside whilst being in pain.

>>2094123

Given its a corticosteroid and an antibiotic, not her best idea. I'd be tempted to give poison control a ring and see what they say. It can also cause birth defects in pregnant animals, so hope you guys aren't trying for a baby.

Please guys, don't use veterinary drugs on yourself.

I just lost a pet and thought it would make a good thread. Get in here to tell stories (funny or sad) and/or to give support. Here's mine:
>have a sun conure
>had him three months, name's Mango
>old owner told me Mango likes to sleep with you on your pillow or nightstand
>have him sleep in cage
>finally decide to let him sleep outside of cage
>set him on nightstand, all goes well
>do it again a week later
>guess he got cold and wanted under my covers
>didn't think anything of it, was very tired
>wake up to him dead
>other two previous birds both eaten by dog
>think "hey third time's the charm" and got rid of dog

there are hundreds of stories like this. birds are dumb anyways. my conure always wants to rub her cloaca on me and its disgusting. this morning i opened her cage and she flew at my face biting the shit out of my neck, screaming, and grinding her cloaca on me leaving this nasty slime trail. why did i ever agree to take this bird. it was a rescue.

maybe i give it to OP and he can give it the whisper of death for me like he did to his other victims. regular dr kevorkian over here.

Hi /an/,

I'm in search of another animal for a vivarium.

I already have a bearded dragon and am interested in something cheaper, since I don't want to pay for a second set of lightning / heat.

I read corn snakes are rather cheap in maintenance. Is this true?

Also thought about bird spiders, but I'd be more interested in something which doesn't hide all day long and I actually can observe.

All snakes require some amount of supplementary heat.
>>
Look for used reptile setups/aquariums.

These things are so, so cheap. I know because I've had to sell a few Exo Terra setups. You're talking $400 in cage/decor/heat/etc for $50.

It's a great sham of the pet trade. This stuff is overpriced like crazy. Lighting and radiant heat panels are about the things that have realistic new/resale prices. I am staring at 2 PVC cages (one $500, and one $350) here in my living room. I'll be lucky to get $75 for either of them. Exo Terra cages - let's say 18x12x24, that's a $200 cage - $30 or so used.

Never buy this shit new unless you're deadly serious about keeping it forever. Take it from a 20 year vet of the trade.
>>
>>2093078

Thanks, I thought about buying used as the prices for new cages etc. Are horrendous.
Since snakes also need heat lamps that's going to get hard. I'm paying already 2 bulbs with combined ~ 80 watts and wouldn't want to pay electric bills for an additional pair.

Guess another reptile won't be manageable.

I personally like this little tidbit

>Bengal finches not only have rules of syntax when it comes to songs, but they also get mighty pissy when other finches break them.

>Researchers at Kyoto University recorded the tweets, chirps and chi-chi-chu-wee-reeeees of a group of finches, then played the songs back to a different group. After a while, the scientists pulled a fast one by taking the same songs and jumbling them up -- forming new "sentences," if you will. In most cases, the finches didn't seem to care. But one version of the jumbled song made the finches go bananas.

>They started screeching angrily -- the kind of call usually reserved for intruding enemy finches. The scientists tried playing the same sound sample again with another group, and they got pissed, too -- virtually every finch that heard it, in fact. The scientists had accidentally created the finch song version of a your/you're mistake.

>In case you're thinking that maybe they had just accidentally created a finch song that naturally sounds violent or threatening, they played it for a group of finches that had been raised in isolation -- they never lived with finches in the wild. They were fine with it. They didn't screech.

>But then when those same finches spent two weeks with the first group, the ones that went apeshit at the sound of the song, soon they started getting pissed off at it, too. Being around the other finches taught them the rules of their "grammar," and taught them to get enraged at those who misuse it.

Thinking of getting another dog in year or so. I have ptsd and anxiety, so the idea of having one sent for some service dog training on top of self training has crossed my mind. I'm fairly experienced with dogs and training. I do a lot of hiking, camping, and general /out/ stuff. I've considered a few breeds, but haven't decided. I'd be open to others too.

Akita pros:
>Large, good visual deterrent
>Lower energy, does alright lounging around/apartment life during down months
>Very quiet, not barky
>Independant, not clingy

Akita cons:
>Thick coat and undercoat
>Independance may detract from trainability and usefulness
>Odd appearance for a service animal
Cattle dog pros:
>Short, easy coat
>High drive and intellligence; highly trainable
>Great for hiking/camping/etc.
>Generally healthy

Cattle dog cons:
>Smaller than I'd like
>May be too high energy and drive
German shepherd pros:
>Very trainable
>Good size, good visual deterrent
>Looks like a common service dog

German shepherd cons:
>Often unhealthy
>Thick coat, shedding
>Too much variation in health, temperment, etc. bc overbred
Malinois pros:
>High drive, very trainable
>Great for hiking/camping/etc.
>Easy coat
>Service dog appearance

Malinois cons:
>May be too drivey and energetic

Not sure. Aren't slime molds supposedly really intelligent, and good at problem solving?

Not sure what kind of enclosure you plan on putting them in, but I'm pretty sure they can escape from anything that isn't airtight, infesting the rest of your home.

No idea what they eat. Probably everything.

I'm no expert, but try to mimic the conditions you've seen it occurring in in the wild (most likely humid and shaded). Maybe try to contact a mycologist or something to identify it. You'll want a growth medium for it, see if you can get hold of some agar gel (you may be able to make a substitute in the kitchen at home) and a petri dish. Make mazes out of card and shit in the petri dish, watch it navigate them and stuff.Keep the petri dish closed to retain humidity and prevent the colony from spilling over, just use an elastic band or something. Not sure how anoxic conditions affect their growth though

How often does your dog poop /an/?

Since my dog made the complete switch from puppy to dog food, he's only been going once a day. We did a gradual switch, and all during the gradual switch, he pooped 3-4 times a day, which has been the normal routine. Once we got to 100% adult food, he started only going once--in the morning. One small, firm, normal turd, and a little plop of softer turds.

He's not acting constipated (hunching over and coming up with nothing), not acting panicked to go, not lethargic, has the same energy/temperament as normal, eating the same amount, etc. He's just pooping less and the amount that comes out just plain doesn't look right for a dog who only poops every 24 hours.

For what it's worth, he's on TOTW. Normally I rotate flavors, but when he made the switch from puppy to adult food I kept the same flavor so it'd be less of a hassle.

Should I just get a fecal exam done and give myself peace of mind, or is this generally normal?

Mine only goes once or twice a day. He is fine but that does not mean that your dog is automatically fine too. Call your vet and see what they recommend

interesting little tidbit for you:
in America, the names of insects are deliberately separate or conjoined based on this fact. Honey bees ARE bees, so its two words. Dragonflies are not flies, so it is one word. House flies, Dobsonflies, etc all follow this rule. In Europe they don't give a shit so its honeybees and whatnot.

Sorry OP but slightly related - do dogs have blood types? Like say my dog lost a lot of blood for whatever reason - would she need specific dog blood? Do vets have backup dog blood?
>>
>>2094842
No idea. All I know is my dog started losing blood throughout the night and we weren't able to get him to the vet fast enough in the morning (further away).

What I would assume though is that your first priority would be to stop the bleeding, just so that he doesn't lose more than he already has. After that, it's a coin toss.
