What are the pros and cons of this breed

Depends on what line you get and which breeder you're going through. Honestly though, it's mostly breeder. Even 'working'lines can come from bad breeders.

But in general:

-Were originally bred as herding dogs, then later work force so very willing to learn
-Are very family oriented and usually looking out for threats. This behavior can be encouraged through proper training
-Great dogs for active lifestyles if the breeding line is secure and doesn't include things like hip displacia or bad hearts

Cons:

-NEED a job to do or they become destructive. This can be helped through mind puzzle games and agility/tracking
-Because of the popularity of the breed, they have been over bred and inbred, creating pore health and bad personality traits, so going through a good breeder is key. A shelter dog is usually a gamble

-Energy and training should focus on positivity and focus, otherwise they can be prone to over protective-ness (aggression), separation anxiety, prey drive, and dog aggressiveness

-Shedding. lots and lots if shedding

great post, pretty much this OP. Never been a German Shepherd owner but based on my knowledge, you have to prepared to work for thi dog to make it work for you. There's a young woman at the park I walk my dogs at and her Shepherd is out of control, she can't even let if off leash. He pulls and yanks and struggles against the leash, I saw him rear up to jump on a small child that was running past. I once gently suggested she try muzzle training him so he can walk on leash better but she give me this shitty attitude of, "i know what's best for my dog and you don't."

basically they're beautiful dogs, but need a strong leader.

So I have a 6 month old pup, she is repeatedly chewing the outside of the house while I'm gone. I've tried toys, bones, kongs to keep her entertained, no luck - she keeps doing it. She has plenty of yard space to herself. Tons of exercise and play time. I've tried anti chew spray, vinegar even fucking cloudy ammonia on the surface - didn't slow her down at all.

Tl;dr:

Suggestions on ways to stop dog chewing exterior of my house while at work

>>
Put something really spicy on it?
>>
>>2132962
Tried it unfortunately, tobacco sauce, paprika & Chilli powders. She'll quite happily lick it off as it is being put on
>>
>>2133002
Have you tried citrus?

I'm kind of a guy that likes things clean and tidy up to a fault. But I really want a dog, ever since I was a kid. I've been researching breeds that have these characteristics:

>small (so they take small shits and don't piss as much)
>short haired
>non-droolers
>less likely to explore everything and fuck up my house's decor
>smart

I've been considering one of these cocksuckers right here, because I usually see a bunch of uptight OCD assholes like me with Boston Terriers and there must be a good reason

rats are pretty small
>short haired
sure
>non-droolers
you should be worried if they're seen droolign at all
>less likely to explore everything and fuck up my house's decor
lives in a cage (unless you let it escape and it's lost)
>smart
smarter than any dog

I have a Boston and at one time had a house with 13 Bostons. They are absolutely amazing dogs but they do sneeze and can get boogies on stuff and their farts are fucking horrendous. Besides that, I think they are incredibly clean dogs though they do slightly shed.

If you're only just deciding now then it's probably too late. Regardless, it's a grueling job, only go into it if you're ok with chopping up and performing surgery on animals, and if you can come to terms with constant death around you. I only did a week in a vets as work experience, and it really hit home how depressing a job it would have been.

You know, I kind of thought that was bullshit about the 50g until you mentioned that. Yeah, 1g for 50 years does add up after a while.

As far as pets go, I believe Macaws may outlive Cockatoos, of course all based on quality care.

Also a lot of those I could easily argue cost more. I remember spending much more on my guinea pig in toys and misc a month, they should also really have a carrier, and their cage does need to be replaces at least once in their lifetime (3 of my 4 lived over 5 years)

Old Thread is coming to an end, time for a new one.

The Basilisk reaches a total length of app. 80 cm (including the tail of app. 50 cm) and weighs app. 200 – 500 grs. The colour of the back ranges from green to olive-brown and brown with dark stripes. The belly is yellow. The outstanding camouflage allows them to remain undetected when they remain motionless in the undergrowth. Its toes are very long and have sharp claws. The head of the males is adorned with both a crest and a coloured dewlap. This crest is supported by elongations of the neural spines. On the back and the tail there are sail-like crests. Basilisks are active during the day. Males are territorial, bobbing their heads as threat gesture and courtship behavior. The female lays 2 – 18 eggs five to eight times per year into a hole, 20’ cm deep, she has dug out herself. After egg-laying, she covers the clutch with soil, pressing down on it with her head. Afterwards there is no parental care. The young hatch after about 3 months. They feed on insects, small vertebrates like snakes, birds and fish but also flowers.

Things to keep in mind:

>Sand a shit
>Tile a best
>Heat rocks cook the reptile
>Leopard geckos don't need lights
>Always use a Thermostat
>Read multiple Caresheets
>Can't find an answer? Just ask!
>Set up your tank before you get your herp
>regulate temps & humidity levels prior to herp arrival
>Allow reptile time to settle in
>Get let your herp get used to you
>PVC tanks are way better for most applications and worth the extra money
>Always order from a reputable breeder
>Check out any upcoming reptile shows

Do you think debarking dogs is ethical? I never really considered it before, but I'm going to be moving into an apartment next week and it's been made clear to me that constant dog barking will not be tolerated. At this point my options are either to have the surgery done to quiet the dog, or give the dog up at which point it will probably be euthanized. I hate to do it, but it's not like the dog even really knows the difference right? Is it really so cruel?

What have you done to train the dog to not bark?
>>
>>2134083
I've tried everything I can but it never seemed to do any good, I talked to a trainer and he said that small breeds like this often do have problems with barking and sometimes there's just nothing that can be done. He was actually the first one that recommended the surgery to me.

At any rate I seriously doubt there's anything I can do at this point that will be effective within a week.
>>
They still make noise with the surgery and its just as annoying. Find somewhere else to live.

Cats are literally shit tier predators.

Going after prey one tenth their size whilst awesome badass predators like stoats and shit are taking down rabbits three times their size.

Cats a shit.

Hi /an/!

I got a question to you animal experts about panda bears. Does pandas only still exist because of us humans? I mean, they seem so "unfit" to be living in the wild. They're slow and clumsy which makes them easy prey and they also run a huge risk to die in accidents because of their clumsiness (i.e falling down from things, getting stuck etc). But humans love panda bears so we keep them in zoos almost to protect them from the wild (and their own clumsiness). Would they be extinct if it weren't for us?

They would be perfectly fine if it wasn't for us. They have evolved for millions of years to adapt to an environment that would never run out of food(with the exception of say china getting scorched) and an adult panda doesn't have predators to begin with. From an evolution standpoint, they were winning. They don't need to hunt down prey, don't need to struggle for food and largely avoided each other except for mating.
>>
They've become endangered due to extensive farming and deforestation of their territory, not because those wacky pandas are so clumsy they just keep killing themselves in hilarious ways. As a 200-300 pound bear, they're not easy prey for anything and they have no natural predators as adults. They're quite slow and docile most of the time, but can defend themselves or their cubs quite well, making them far too risky for most predators to take on.

So no, pandas are endangered specifically because of humans, they were doing fine in their weird ecological niche until people encroached on their territory. It is however true that they're not very adaptable in terms of their diet and territory and they don't breed well in captivity.
