got a stray cat with some kind of wound on it's leg. everything is closed right now, does this look like it'll be okay until morning or do I need to drive an hour with this little idiot to get to the nearest vet that's open?

the cat has been very affectionate and looks kind of chubby, but no collar and it's been wandering around outside for about a week.

I'm taking care of this dog and I just saw this wound on the side of her face, we don't go to places with tall grass or any grass at all, I don't know what it is or what could've caused it, we can't go to the vet because it's too expensive and don't want to risk it if its nothing but a wound. Have you seen similar wounds on animals? What could it be?

what role do wasps play in nature? They just seem like territorial assholes who sting the fuck out of tards. people talk about eliminating mosquitos but at least they serve a purpose as nature's population control. wasps are just annoying stinging assholes

Have you heard of parasitic wasps?
>>
It's wrong to think about it that way. Animals don't evolve to fill a role in an ecosystem.

All it is is genetic patterns that're successful at reproducing, continue reproducing.
>>
They kill other pests and consume decaying matter, both of which help out the farmers. Mosquitos don't do shit which makes them worse

Hello, /an/. I'm thinking of volunteering at local pic related and wonder if I'd be a good candidate. I have 5/5 experience raking shit and feeding hay, and I volunteer at a small museum where I handle/care for reptiles. I'm also working on a wildlife technology associates.
That sounds good, but I know they get thousands of fucking applications. I'm just trying to figure out if I'm interested in working with the zoo industry and if yes, also some solid experience.

>>
>>2450575
It doesn't matter they get thousands of applications when you're doing all their work for free. They'd probably be delighted to get twice that many so they could fire their full time staff and save even more money. Why prostitute yourself out like this to make them rich on your sweat and labor? Shoveling dingo shit for free in the summer heat is the most degrading thing you can put yourself through. If you're going to volunteer at least make it for a worthwhile cause.

I have a problem with my cats, /an/.

My cats are aged 11 and 5, and for all this time they've been good little indoor cats. Recently, the older one began spraying in a way that seems completely random. Sometimes it's a wall, sometimes it's a cardboard box, and sometimes it's dirty laundry in queue to be washed. They're both neutered, but I know that even neutered cats will spray.

The younger cat has now begun to spray, in what I assume is a response to my older cat spraying. I can't figure out why they're doing it or what sparked it. They've had the same routine for years just being cats. If anyone has any insight for this, I'm all ears.

Take the older one to the vet and make sure it isn't a kidney or bladder issue. Also start spraying them with a water spray bottle when you catch them doing it if it ends up being a behavioral thing.
>>
>>2450372
Actually take them both to vet to make sure it's not something that's spread from one cat to the other.
>>

There is actually a fairly concrete test for autism in cats.

If you set up a model train to run, and he watches it for very long, or (this is severe autism) tries to play with it, then he's autistic to some degree. Increasing on the spectrum the longer and more intensely he interacts with the train.

What's the legality behind collecting samples from national forests?
If, for example, I was interested in collecting water algae and silt samples from different ecosystems in a national forest so I could study the microbial life of the water, is that legal?
I assume if you're allowed to fish and keep those fish for consumption, surely it wouldn't be a big fuss to collect a few small mason jars of water and a little bit of plant material? Are there any specific laws governing the removal of small amounts of water for amateur science?

It's fine so long as you're not publishing your findings or making money. In those cases you'd need a permit.

You're also not allowed to take samples of most vertebrates or trees without the proper license (fishing, hunting, timber, etc). Also you're not allowed to remove or disturb artifacts or vertebrate fossils.

Finally you're not allowed to cause "significant" disturbance of the environment without doing NEPA paperwork, posting at least a million dollar bond, and getting permission. Your best bet to avoid this is to make sure nobody can tell that you took anything.

In your case the only potential problem I might see is if you found something really exciting, then you wouldn't be able to publish it until after you got a research permit and repeated the find. But that's extremely unlikely to happen.
>>
>>2449707
You can of course just call up your local ranger district office and ask them. They will tell you if it's ok and perhaps tell you where to look.
>>
>>2449741
>>2449742
Thanks for the solid advice anons. I'm not planning on taking anymore than a few jam jars worth of water and small plant matter, so I couldn't imagine it'd be considered anything near a significant disturbance.

Is it possible for an individual to even get a research permit? How much would that cost? I don't expect to find anything ground breaking, but if I do I suppose I could just consult with the local university and park service.

I've heard a lot of people arguing over this one and I don't really know enough about this to have a proper opinion on it.
So, are wild caught animals really that bad and if so why or why not?
5 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
You shouldn't take animals out of the wild to keep as pets because a captive breeding industry already exists so pets can be had without affecting the local wild population. Secondly, wild caught specimans -i'm talking reptiles and amphibians here- do not adapt well to captive conditions, may never adapt, are often loaded with parasites and absolutely require vet care.

Don't be cheapskate.

It is fine if you get a breeding pair then raise the newborn/hatch or get something as an egg or newborn and can actually care for it.

Depends on the species, their conservation status, and your local laws. I mean if you live in florida and wanna take in a pair of cane toads (which are invasive) go for it.

What are the best spots/opportunities to see basking sharks around the UK this time of the year?

There seem to be regular tours in Scotland and Cornwall, has anyone attended one before?

Would appreciate any advice.

Grow some butterworts or some other sticky carnivorous plant maybe?

just thought you'd enjoy hearing my little tale of woe, /an/

>Own bearded dragon
>Normally feed it locusts or salad but decide to give it a treat
>buy some waxworms
>little maggot things, apparently a delicacy idk
>comes in yellow tub, can't see into it
>month or two passes
>tonight
>go to feed lizard
>find tub of wax worms that I missed
>bring tub to about chest level and open it to check if these fuckers are still alive
>moth immediately flies out the second the tub is opened, flies directly into my mouth
>freak out a little, try to swat it away
>still holding tub
>completely cover room in sawdust and worms
>swallow moth by accident

So there you are, I'm now sitting here in a room coated with sawdust and crawling with worms
