I got this little girl a couple of days ago, she was a stray hanging out at a bar. She's amazingly friendly and calm considering I basically tricked her into a box and kidnapped her, I never expected her to be so clingy and affectionate so soon. She's doing really well with litter-training too. Thankfully she's free of fleas.

She seems to have been in the wars a bit though, while you can't really see it here one of her ears is somewhat crushed, and I can feel that her tail's been broken at some point. She's very bright, clean and alert though and doesn't seem to be in any pain. I'll be taking her to the vet on Sunday.

Do dogs smile in the human sense or is that just the shape of their heads
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
They totally smile. There is a fair amount of "it's just how their head is shaped" but there are dog smiles too.

Forever ago my sister moved back in with the parents and had a dog. I went over early one day to visit. Sister kicked the dog out of her room to sleep in. The dog comes sleepy waddling up the stairs on her way outside and saw me sitting in the living room. Once she recognised me she straight up smiled. The corners of her mouth scrunched up in the biggest smile ever and started wagging and came over for pets. It was the cutest fucking thing ever.

Still, not all dogs smile with their mouths closed. Google "dog laughing". It's that pant/chuff noise they do when playing. If they are doing that, look at their face. Five bucks says their cheeks are more scrunched up than they are when they are just panting because it's hot.

>>2458377
It's both. You can tell from this pic. This dog has clearly just spotted the neighbor's 3-year old in the back yard and is about to strike.

I'm in Japan so I can't read the can very well but I just unleashed like half a can of cockroach kill spray on a huge mother fucker until he stopped moving entirely and then i noticed the room was almost misty i sprayed so much, became hard to breath, my nose and tongue has a funny feeling and nose still running.

air has cleared up but what are the general side effects of roach spray?

>>
>>2458293
Check google for the side effects and health hazards of inhaling Raid bug spray fumes. If it's anything like that, chances are it'll have similar effects.

It was really stupid of you to use HALF a can of roach spray on one fat roach, though.

From the symptoms you describe, it's a pyrethroid based insecticide. You basically gassed yourself with neurotoxin. You'll probably develop Parkinson's disease later in life.

Does anyone have experience buying beetles online? Is it safe/reliable? Is it better to buy the larvae?

Thanks in advance

Have you tired inviting him in or saying something along the lines of "no, after you!"
Maybe he doesn't open doors because he expects you to be civil and open doors for him.

I personally like mutual of Omaha wild kingdom.
Still not as good as anything with David Attenborough however.

thinking of getting a ringneck dove, but not sure if i will have enough time. Working full time rn as a forensic entomologist from 8 to 4, and don't want to get 2 doves since i fear they will bond with each other instead of me. once i get home i have no work to do, so i will spend all of my remaining time with my ringneck. Good idea???

I don't know, anon. I'm not sure if it's good for them to be alone. I have one fantail pigeon because he was really sick when he was younger. He usually doesn't seem too affected, but I think he just tries to play it off. His social skills are shit, he tries to fuck my chicken, and there's a chance your dove still won't bond with you.
And even if it does, do you know what kind of shit you'll have to go through? Some doves peck people's hands and attack after being left alone too long as punishment. They can draw blood. Then you have them throwing up on your hand to try and kiss you, humping your hand, pecking you for no reason, and the cooing. The constant "u want sum fuk" cooing.

I wouldn't do it personally, but depending on when you work and how good you are at understanding the signs of a lonely depressed dove, you might be able to pull it off.
Keep in mind every single dove and pigeon website will advise you not to. It's not natural for them.
>>
>>2457585
Birds need pretty much constant care and attention or they can get depressed. A person who works full time should NOT get a bird. Those 8 hours you are gone will stress the bird out.

I argue that picking up after your dog should NOT be required in parks and public areas. I have good arguments to back up my proposition.

1) Dog waste will biodegrade by its self in a short time and will contribute nutrients to the grass.
2) The bags used to pick up the waste end up contributing MORE waste to landfills than if the waste was just left on the grass.
3) An extension of point 2, the garbage bins in parks end up filling up faster, and attract flies.
4) Baggie dispensers/vending machines won't be needed anymore.
5) The grass that was touched by feces will still be dirty even after clean-up, so barefoot walkers will still step in feces. But at least a pile is more noticeable and easier to avoid.
6) Remembering to carry around baggies is a hassle for dog owners.
7) Picking up dog waste is an inconvenience to dog owners, and it's demeaning.
8) It is canine nature to want to sniff waste. By removing these valuable scent markers, we are curtailing their instinctual habits.
9) Getting rid of mandatory clean-up would be one less crime that could be committed, which is always a good thing.
10) Employees could be hired in parks to do the cleaning instead. This would create jobs.

It's time we get rid of dog-waste clean up laws. Do you agree?

No, in fact every dog shit that is found in public should be DNA tested and traced back to the dog/owner who should then:

1. Pay a (now trebled) fine
2. Do public service cleaning up local parks (1 hour for every gram of shit they didn't originally clean up)
3. Have their garden designated as a community dog toilet for the duration of their service
4. Be put on the sex offenders register
>>
Dog shit kills grass mang
>>
No. People don't want to step in piles of dog shit or have to constantly worry about dodging it. Nor do they want their dogs stepping in piles of poop, potentially rolling in it, etc. It's disgusting and unpleasant for everyone.

Also, dog poop doesn't degrade THAT quickly so places where lots of dogs frequent would be covered in an unreasonably amount of waste if (most) people did not pick it up.

Yes, plastic baggies add waste to landfills, but rather than just not picking up after our dogs, perhaps we should instead try to find a better solution to this problem, like creating cleanup bags made of biodegradable material.

Also...
>It is canine nature to want to sniff waste. By removing these valuable scent markers, we are curtailing their instinctual habits.
By your own claim in your point #5, there is still residue left behind so obviously dogs can still smell it. Cleaning up piles of poop doesn't prevent them from being able to sniff and explore those spots.

I get that it's gross and inconvenient to pick up after your dog, but that's just part of your responsibility as a dog owner. Even if you're ok navigating a minefield of dog poop, most people are not (especially not people who don't own dogs in the first place.) I own a dog and I don't like cleaning up her poop, but I do it as a consideration to other people and their pets, and to keep our favorite parks pleasant places for us to return to.

Plus, you can bet your ass if dog waste cleanup was not legally mandatory, WAY more places would become off-limits to dogs entirely because of complaints about the waste and not wanting to deal with it. That's already an issue despite waste pickup being mandatory, because many jackasses don't follow the rule. Not picking up after your dog ruins it for the rest of us because the general public does not want their parks and beaches covered in dog shit. If everyone did their part in cleaning up after their dog, dogs would be allowed more places.

Hello everyone, a cousin found a turtle and gave it to me as a surprise, without my prior knowledge, and she brought it many miles away from its original habitat. Fortunately I used to own a lizard so i have a terrarium as well as day and night reptile bulbs. I ran over to the pet store and got some turtle water purifier but the person at the store couldn't help me identify it. Can you guys help me figure out what this baby is? I'd like to build it a habitat that will suit it. It is from Kentucky so it could be a box turtle, I just want to be absolutely sure. If you need more pictures please let me know. It is very feisty and hasn't retracted into its shell very much, and it loves to "run". I'd also like to identify its gender. Thanks in advance!

There are two types of dogs that sleep on your bed. One sleeps on the corner and enjoys being near you without touching you, the other insists on sleeping on your face.

Which do you prefer?

We have big cats (whose success has allowed them to exist on pretty much every continent) so why don't we have any "big dogs" who hunt solo? Canids are equally widespread, but most of them are either pack hunters or solitary hunters that focus on small game like rats. Bears come close, but most of them hardly seem to focus on hunting big game. What about canidae has prevented them from producing a large solitary hunter?

Why wouldn't that be an effective strategy if they weighted 250lb and hunted alone? Felines are clearly the more efficient killers, but canids get the job done all the same.
