Sup /an/,

I'm sure you guys get this thread all the time, but I need to know.

Does this guy actually know what he is talking about or is he just a meme? How much of what he says about dogs and pack mentality true? Thanks

>>
Our behiourist believes in pack behaviour in dogs. Whether or not it actually exists I cant argue with the results. Dingoes are domestic dogs gone feral and they live in packs.
>>
>>2165966
Pack mentality has been debunked decades ago. Wolves form family units like humans. Dogs keep their cub mentality.
It's not about dominance.
Positive reinforcement is the only method that works, well unless your goal is to end up with an anxious, frustrated, inhibited dog, then do follow his advice.
He's a farce.
>>
>>2166008
>Pack mentality has been debunked decades ago.
No, it hasn't. That's a stupid statement, and you can observe pack behaviors at any given dog park on any given day.
>Wolves form family units like humans.
True...in the wild.
>Dogs keep their cub mentality.
You mean "pup" mentality, and it depends on the dog, the breed, and training.
>It's not about dominance.
It's about LEADERSHIP and assertiveness. A jack russel terrier can be, and usually is, more assertive than a great dane, which means that big pussy dane will look to the little rat terrier for leadership and guidance.
>Positive reinforcement is the only method that works
Bullshit. Positive reinforcement is one aspect of, essentially, a 4 part approach to teaching espoused by B.F. Skinner, and part of his "operant conditioning". You can successfully teach using any one of his 4 approaches, or by using a combination of all 4. Positive reinforcement, positive punishment, negative reinforcement, and negative punishment have all been shown to be effective approaches to teaching / conditioning.
>He's a farce.
Only to tumblrina's that get upset when he employs positive punishment approaches.

The funny thing about all the emo bitches that champion positive reinforcement is that the professionals that use it, like dolphin and whale trainers, also employ "cruel" techniques to make it more effective, like food denial, or social isolation.

Milan understands canine behavior far better than 99.9% of the emo land whale chicks that think "clicker training" is the only way to teach a dog how to properly behave.

If you've ever worked with working dogs, you'd understand the importance of earning the respect of the dog as its leader, because male working dogs WILL challenge your leadership, and if you're not willing to check it and show it that you can and WILL "dominate" that fucker, it won't respect you, and it won't work for you, because you don't earn a dogs respect by giving it treats.

A bunch of my friends are calling me dumb for saying that fish don't breathe underwater. I know the word breathe is usually used to explain when a fish absorbs oxygen with it's gills, but the definition of breathe on google, and dictionary.com specify having lungs, which fish do not have.
7 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
yeah, that's a fairly stupid thing to argue with your friends about.
>>
If you think that the modern definition of words trumps the actual usage of them, you're gonna have a bad time. That also goes for their etymology.
>>
>>2171538
well, it's cause he posted this pic and said, are you assuming my gender? and I brought up how fish don't breathe underwater.

Knicked an ornate box turtle while weed eating. Very light scuff on bottom shell. Should I take it to the nature center or return it to the same place after finishing weed eating?

If it's very light like you say it is, let him go. He'll be fine.
>>
Itll be fine. Finish what you gotta do and send him off.

Cool cool. Just hope I don't knick him again next time, I have a really small garden so I was surprised to see him. He's all good now, outside again and eating my wildflowers.

I'm thinking about getting a maine coon. Anybody on here had any experience with them?

Also, are there any places I should look at or things I should look for in getting one? Like so I don't get scammed.

Look for a rescue, they're more likely to have a Maine Coon. Or go to cat shows to find a breeder if you want.

The Maine Coon is a popular breed, so you should be very careful getting one from a breeder. Make sure they do all the necessary yearly health testing. Don't take the breeders word on it, ask for a copy. Any good breeder will be glad you are asking.
You should try to visit a cat show near you to meet a breeder in person.

http://ticamembers.org/calendar/

If you decide to rescue, go through the breed club, as most rescues will call any long haired cat a MC.

Hypothetically
>I have a snek that needs to be at 32º
>I set a heat panel or bulb with a thermostat that sets those degrees inside the viv
>summer starts and inside the room we reach 32º, so the thermostat turns the heat system off
>the snake is at 32 but has no heat source like it will have the sun on the wild

does it get warmer just from the air? is there any difference between the 32 with a heat point and 32 without it? forget for a moment the idea that it will need a cooler side and all that

About a month ago I adopted a three-legged, 1-2 year old rescue dog, Bowie. All we know is that he was passed around to different foster homes for the last year. Before that he was found as a stray, which was after his leg was amputated so no one knows how it happened.
For the first week he was biting me, my parents and my fiance. After that he became attached to me and bit anyone who would come near me. For the most part the biting is over. Now he loves to cuddle with us and sleeps in bed with us at night. He's good about letting us know when he has to go out and he learns tricks quickly. When I have parties he's very good with guests after the initial stressful introduction.
Unfortunately I'm still having a lot of problems with aggression towards strangers on walks. I walk him around town because we have no yard and he loses it if he sees a horse and carriage or other people walking dogs. Sometimes he's nice but sometimes curious people just get a growl out of him. He used to sniff strangers' hands but he almost always growls and nips now. I don't know what to do. When I pick him up or try to calm him down he bites me.

For serious behavior issues like this, I would recommend working with a professional behaviorist. Good on you for rescuing this dude though. He looks like he can be a good boy one day.

I hate people that irrationally hate cats. Besides, all cats are adorable and you simply have shit taste.

I have never owned a sphynx cat, mostly because they are expensive due to their breeding, but they should be essentially the same as any other cat, just more sensitive to the sun and with a few skincare issues.

Can anyone help identify what plant this seed may have come from?
All that I can tell you is that I found it washed up under a pile of seaweed on a beach in Cornwall, England. I know that due to the Gulf Stream, seeds have been found here that have come from the Amazon, the Eastern Seaboard and just about wherever else you can think of before.
There's also a rattle sound when you shake it, does that mean it's still fertile? A few more photos to come
