So i've been thinking of getting a sulcata tortoise, i know they grow fairly fast and live longer than i could hope for myself but what am i to expect that articles wont tell me?
>>2170193
that tortoises and turtles are pretty fucking shit pets that require a lot of space and care while not offering much in return
>>2170193
That you need to find someone younger/longer lived than yourself to take care of them because most animal shelters won't.
Hey /adv/ I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing with plants as I have never owned one before. I recently received a moon cactus that's in a pot from home depot. How the fuck do I care for this thing? When do I water it? I am keeping it in this pot.
Those grafted cacti are a pretty bad choice for a first cactus and are pretty much guaranteed to suffer slowly or die quickly. The only advice I could give would be to change the soil to a better draining and peat less kind and water infrequently during the growing season and not at all during the dormancy period which is winter for most cacti. Also they like a fair bit of light but not direct sunlight.
If you're actually interested in cacti you'd be better off owning non mutant cacti which are far more rewarding and will last your entire lifetime.
I want to marry the blue-ringed octopus!
Fuck off, she's mine!

Hi, I just want some opinions from the bird owners here. I want to adopt one or the other out of these two birds. Im a newbie to birds. But im a good pet owner.
>is one cheaper in the long run to care for?
>which is more playful?
>does one need more socialising than the other?
I have a lot of free time, but somedays im at work for 12+hours
>any huge personality or care differences between the two?
my green cheek is like a tiny dog with feathers mixed with a toddler... really affectionate, playful, cuddly, likes tons of attention, and extremely friendly (she'll jump on new people's shoulders and preen them), she does some funny shit so she's amusing to watch too + she's very closely bonded to both my s/o and i so she's not a one person bird... not in the least bit shy
her biggest issue is her stubborness, and she does need a lot of attention (though she's somewhat independent and it doesn't have to be constant), it's easy for me cuz i can't work due to health issues so i'm usually home...
i've never owned a cockatiel, but my s/o did as a kid and prefers the green cheek personality by a lot... my older bro had one when he was little and i've heard stories about it being unpleasant from him and my parents (but him and my parents do like birds), and my uncle has had 2 one handraised that was unpleasant and loud and hissed all the time at everyone but him (it would sit with him but didn't like being pet or cuddled), and his other one is about the same... noisy as fuck, but people do say they're mellow and whatnot and can enjoy them... i find them kinda boring and loud personally, and would never get one... but they're more likely than a conure to be able to handle you being gone more... though with shifts that long no matter what kinda bird you get you should think about a companion for it, and if you're getting a pair i'd recommend budgies...
pic is my conure chilling outside a cafe with me
>>2170113
Do you think on my long shifts if i provide enough toys and stuff he would be ok? I dont work long those shifts often. Your bird is gorgeous.
>>2170117
i honestly can't say, cuz i've never done that... we've taken her with us for overnight trips and i'm never gone that long... usually a few hours at a time at most, and me going out longer than that tends to involve trips back home in between cuz if i go out without her it's just to chill and smoke weed or something otherwise she just comes with + i have 2 budgies who she gets along with so she has bird friends too so it's been extremely rare that she's ever been completely alone and when she has it wasn't for long... she does handle it well though when it's happened, but it's not comparable to 12 hours... someone else might know there's a few people with green cheeks on this board, i imagine if it's really infrequent it might work out ok
i can tell you my uncle's cockatiel can handle that though... for sure, and has without issue
thanks btw, here's another pic
Does anyone know what sort of bird this is? Found it in my back yard, seems very young and can't fly. Doesn't look like any of the common birds around here (south-eastern Europe).
is chubby bubby qt birb :3

Finch is your starting point I think, due to beak. I have no more information.
>>2170090
Yup, Serbian Finch it is.
Too bad my cat already killed it.
j/k the fucker is back in its nest
Hey /an/. I just got new gerbils yesterday. Any tips on how to care for them? All they eat are corn and nothing else, they don't drink much, and they don't use the wheel at all. How do I know if they're dying or just being cute?
Pic upside down. I don't know how to fix it.
>>2169966
>all they eat is corn and nothing else
Most small animals have food preferences like this. Nothing to worry about so long as a balanced diet is availible. They'll start eating other stuff eventually.
>they don't drink much
Nigga they're from the desert.
>They don't use the wheel at all
Also nothing to worry about. In my experience only hamsters and mice use the wheel. Take it out if they don't want it.
By the look of the wheel, I'm thinking you got one of those kaytee hamster kits. The wheels in those aren't even big enough for a syrian let alone a gerbil.
From what I've seen, gerbils would rather chew on a wheel than run on it.
Don't buy the food that has nuts and stuff. But just straight gerbil pellets (or oxbow gerbil/hamster food). Give seeds and such as a treat to help them bond with you.
At least you got two.
Also, they LOVE dust baths. Buy some critter dust or chinchilla dust. Put it in a bowl big enough for them to roll in and set it in the cage.
Finally, get some millet. They love millet (found in bird section of pet stores.
Get a bigger cage, or better yet, and aquarium (10 gallon is fine) and a wire cage topper. (Pic related without wheel). Put as much bedding in the aquarium part to allow them to borrow/make tunnels.

Forgot pic.
Any /an/ons been through PhD school? What can you tell me about your experience with school, the job market, shit like that?
what kind of program are you curious about?
molecular bio? genetics? ecology? physiology? behavior?
>>2169967
Leaning towards ecology or behavior.
>>2169941
genetics and molecular bio is where the jobs are now
ecology is alright if you're prepared to do a LOT of fieldwork
Hey guys, I have a question about my mom's dog, who I occasionally have to take care of.
Whenever my mom has me take care of her dog, he gets really bad separation anxiety and will try to run outside to chase after her car whenever she leaves, and will wait by the door for pretty much any chance to run outside, whenever I'm the one taking care of him.
He's usually a pretty obedient dog, and over time he's grown more accustomed to my commands, even when my mom is gone.
For example, if he runs outside to go after my mom, I'll call him back and sometimes he does actually come back. But other times he'll just stop dead in his tracks but won't come back and basically just sits there, like he's conflicted as to what he wants to do. In the beginning, he wouldn't listen to me at all.
More recently he's started a new behavior where if I tell him to stop and come back, he stops, but then he rolls onto his back and exposes his belly to me. It's like a 50/50 chance as to whether he'll listen to me and come back or do the belly-up gesture.
Is the belly exposure a sign that he is being submissive, or aggressive and resistant to my orders?
Also, how do I get him to be more compliant with my commands?
he looks pretty happy in that cheetos bag
>
Is the belly exposure a sign that he is being submissive, or aggressive and resistant to my orders?
he wants pet or to play with you, jerkass
Hey /an/ noticed this cute little vine weed in my grape plant. I like how it looks so I just left it.
What kind of plant is it?
>>2169617
Morning glory, watch it spreads very fast and will eat your fence. But it's good if you want privacy.
Yeah it grows about 6-10 inches a night. I'm obsessed with vines so I left it. I'm glad it gets even prettier down the line
>>2169736
Don't bother trying to eat seeds. Nothing happens. Leave roots in place, they come back annually but next year it will show up way earlier.
Dead vines are a mess. Plant fiber will make you itch bad, wear gloves during the yearly cleanup.
Do adult storks even have voices? I know baby ones have, but do adults even make any sound besides clattering their beaks?
I want to take some aquatic isopods with me from France to the US. They are Assellus Aquaticus and are native to the US. How do I take them through the airport. Also a family member was supposed to water my garlic while I was travelling and they didn't, and now they say I didn't tell them too, which I know is bullshit because they forget things all the time. and my garlic is dead.
put them in a airplane sized bottle?
may your garlic RIP in peace.
jesus h christ what is wrong with you. don't smuggle vermin. double don't smuggle vermin you could get here, that's so fucking stupid. go buy some garlic at the store, it's real cheap and if you shop around a little can be better than whatever you were doing
>>2169545
Your life sounds like a fucking Big Bang Theory episode.
Found this little guy on my wall. It moves like a tiny caterpillar and is covered in small hairs.
What is it?
carpet beetle larva
>>2169340
Thanks. Suppose it could have been worse. lol
>could've been worse
What the fuck is wrong with you
Stop what you're doing and take a picture of your cat.
>>2169306
Where is the cat in this picture?
she's normally pretty cute I swear
I woke up this morning and there were two baby blackbirds in my little yard on the floor. I thought they were dead because they weren't moving and they had flies on them.
So I went to put them in the bin and they were moving a bit. I put them back in the nest which was a little way away in a shrub. Then I came back a few hours later and one of them was back on the ground just barely moving.
What the hell do I do with these things? It's a really hot day and there are cats roaming around everywhere.
Online it says to put them in a box or something, but I'm pretty confident these things can't make it. They're only just moving and they don't have any feathers.
put it back in the nest
The fuck out of this.. please
i got you
>>2169241
This. Fuck off OHPEH
Get the fuck out
